About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Jennifer Bushell

In February 2004 on a cold & unusually snowy day, we found Lartigue. We took the plunge and upped sticks moving from the UK in the July & had a thoroughly enjoyable sunny summer preparing for our first gite season in 2005. All our friends thought we were brave. It didn't cross our minds, & since then every day has brought a new adventure, extraordinary stories and experiences of wildlife & weather, new friends & interests, gastronomical delights and a thoroughly enjoyable climate!

Year property purchased 2004
Why this location? We didn't know anything about the Lot-et-Garonne or the "Orchard of France" with its fields full of fruit and nuts - not the Dordogne! After the UK & London, we were just hoping to see more sunshine & enjoy a more peaceful way of life. We certainly haven't been disappointed! Many compare the undulating countryside to Devon. We've discovered so much history (apparently the most for any region of France), clubs & interests, free concerts, opera & other cultural or traditional events to enjoy and all year round activities in bustling Villereal and the surrounding bastide towns. Great transport links and climate. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to locally produced food and wine with the markets and farms and the vide greniers/marche des puces are always good fun. After 14 years there's still plenty to discover and we are now finding new adventures with our grandchildren. We can quickly & easily pop back to the UK to visit family and friends but always in a hurry to get back home.
Unique benefits of property When EDF come to read the meter or other French visitors exclaim "c'est tres jolie" you know Moulin de Lartigue is a very special home. The setting is unique and you will take away echoes of the golden oriole calling all summer and pictures in your mind of the swallows and swifts with their turquoise tummies reflecting from the pool as they swoop alongside you cleverly picking up insects from the surface. Away from the roads and immediate neighbours a good nights sleep is guaranteed after you've sat listening in late Spring to the nightingales, or in summer to the crickets and frogs. The cottages are "quirky", not boutique, but it's a privilege to be a small part of their 500 years history, for just a short while, imaging the people and events that have taken place in this special corner of SW France. Frequently all the plans & visits our guests imagined get forgotten whilst they just spend time relaxing at Lartigue. We hope you might visit and take some special memories home too.

The Owner Recommends

So much to see and do

You can make your holiday as relaxing or as active as you please. An easy drive will take you through the stunning scenery of the wine regions around Cahors to the east on the River Lot, Bergerac to the north on the River Dordogne or west on the Dropt at Duras & the largest wine region in France – Bordeaux.

Steeped in history and legend, there is also an abundance of flora & fauna to enjoy. Walking with our two cocker spaniels & cycling are two of my favourite ways of enjoying nature.

Visit the bastide towns with their 12th & 13th century churches or one of the any chateaus. Monpazier is one of our favourites if you enjoy looking into arts & crafts shops or finding handmade gifts, along with Monflanquin and Issigeac. A market a day and in the summer the night markets July & August & enjoy local fine food and wine and entertainment in their squares. Salles near Lacapelle de Biron is my favourite.

Further afield more notable tourist attractions like St Cirq le Popie, the famous Pont Valentre in Cahors and Pujols. Agen is a full day out. Take a stroll along the aquaduct crossing the River Garonne and watch those taking a “waterway” holiday negotiate the many locks. Visit one of the best provincial museums in France and explore the narrow cloisters and passageways with their overhanging timber facades.

Cyrano de Bergerac is waiting to welcome you or take a boat ride along the Dordogne.

If you have time for a day at the beach, the Atlantic coastline has the most superb stretches of sand and the Dune du Pilat (the highest sand dune in Europe) or Cap Ferret. Or if boating is your thing you are spoilt for choice for canoe hire locations. Or there is a leisure beach & lake in Lougratte, a short 15 minute drive.

Restaurants are plentiful, the closest being the Monte Cristo, 2kms away. You can take the nearby chemin and walk, rather than toss to see who is driving, but do remember to take a torch for the walk back!

As well as prune museums, golf, walking .
