The Brittany region
Châteauneuf-du-Faou is in Finistère, Brittany in the North West corner of France. It is a small town of about 4000 inhabitants with a full range of amenities, e.g. supermarkets, banks, doctors, dentist, bars, restaurants, creperies and pizzeria. It is set above the Nantes-Brest canal and the Hyeres and Aulne rivers which provide a huge amount of entertainment for visitors. At the Penn ar Pont leisure centre you can also hire a range of bikes and boats, i.e. kayaks, canoes, pedaloes or go on the passenger boat up the river.
Music Festivals - there are frequent music festivals throughout the summer to enjoy, as well as a sensational Jazz Festival which occurs on the banks of the River Aulne, a truly magical setting. The Les Vieilles Charrues Festival in Carhaix in July is a must for contemporary music lovers too. The Bout du Monde festival in Crozon in early August also attracts top names.
Golf - there are a number of excellent golf courses in Finistere, the nearest ones situated at Carhaix 15 miles, Brest 40 miles and Golf de Cornouaille at Foret Fouesnant, near Quimper.
Finistere is loved for its mild climate, unspoilt beaches, its traditional Breton culture and breath taking scenery, making it an ideal holiday destination for families and experienced travellers alike.
Day Trips - Château de Trévarez which overlooks Châteauneuf-du-Faou. Oceanopolis in Brest, rated one of the best aquaria in the world, is a great family day out 50 minutes away. Nature lovers staying in Châteauneuf-du-Faou are spoilt for choice for day trips. The magnificently natural Ile d'Ouessant, forms part of the Armorique Nature Reserve which encompasses many of the smaller islands off the Finistere coast.
The interior of Finistere also claims some beautiful locations. There are many circular walks in the area around Châteauneuf-du-Faou, during which you will almost certainly stumble across one of the amazing pre-historic sites which adorn the region. The medieval town of Quimper has ancient buildings, including its imposing cathedral, modern shops and a variety of art galleries and museums.
Beaches - if you head west to the beaches of the Baie de Douarnenez, from Crozon round to Douarnenez, or south to Benodet, Beg Meil, Concarneau or Pont l'Abbe, there is plenty on offer to keep you entertained. The nearest is Pentrez Plage with a 2.5 kilometre flat sandy beach plus shops and cafes. The Sunday Times ranked Pentrez Plage in their top 20 beach holidays in Europe: “If it's rock pools, foaming surf and acres of white sand you ache for, then point yourself towards Brittany. One of the prize spots is Pentrez Plage, on the huge, sweeping Baie de Douarnenez — the kind of beach where you can kick footballs, hunt for crabs and fly kites. Backed by high cliffs pockmarked with caves, Pentrez has safe shallows for tots, as well as high-adrenaline sports such as sand-yachting and speed-sailing.” We recommend eating at the creperie at St Come, just 800 metres from the beach, where there are over 580 (!) varieties of galette to choose from.
July 2016 - "Really Comfortable, Fantastic Location. This is a lovely house with everything that you could need for a relaxing time in Brittany. The garden is beautiful and the location next to the Nantes Brest canal perfect for walking and cycling. Chateauneuf du Faou is a very pretty small town with good places to eat and plenty of places to buy food etc. I would absolutely recommend this house to anyone looking for a comfortable, relaxed break."
August 2016 - "We were tempted to keep this place secret! We recently returned from our second visit to Le Grand in exactly two years - the first time with our son and daughter-in-law, the second with dear friends. Neither disappointed in any way. Because the owners, Derek and Margaret Ling, normally live there when they are chez eux, it is equipped as a proper home rather than as a holiday let, so it lacks few, if any, facilities you would expect to find in your own home. The house is spacious and extremely comfortable. The garden is huge, with endless leisure equipment to match. It leads to the riverside path that offers walks or cycle rides to the heart's content. It is secluded, but not remote from the town's facilities. The nearest restaurant is about 2km distant, but Le Chaland is well worth the journey - fairly simple fare, but moules frites and home-made pizza par excellence. Le Grand is also a great base for visiting the verdant landscape and other attractions of south Finistere - Quimper, Concarneau, Chateaulin, Playben and beaches are all within a fairly leisurely half-hour drive, and other attractions are just minutes away. The fact that we wanted to go back should be testament enough - and we are a bit picky about holiday lets - and the owners don't make unsustainable claims about the property or facilities. We plan to return!"

We are both retired, in our early 60s and enjoy walking, cycling, gardening and travelling. We have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. We fell in love with France when we first came here when the children were very young and always wanted to buy a house here. Our dream came true in 2011 when we moved from the UK and we have lived in Chateauneuf du Faou since then.

The accommodation is ideally proportioned for a family of four and is very well equipped! Including a small pool, which we did not know at the time of booking, so assume is a new addition. The kids loved this!
