|Les Bruyeres||Self Catering||Saturday||2||4||1||Can sleep 6 at a pinch - box room downstairs|
In a quiet valley where Brittany meets Normandy, Les Bruyères is a perfect holiday base for couples or groups of friends seeking a peaceful getaway break. It will also suit families with young children who love wildlife and open space. Although right out in the country, it is only 5 minutes by car (or 20 minutes' walk) from a supermarket and small town.
The cottage can sleep 6 if needed, but is better suited to 2-4 people, as the bathroom and downstairs bedroom are very small.
The usual changeover day is Saturday, but if you'd like to begin your stay on a different day we'll try to accommodate you - feel free to ask.
Kitchen with breakfast bar through to living/dining area. Washing machine.
Living room with exposed beams and wood burning stove. Narrow spiral staircase leading to first floor.
Upstairs: Double bedroom and open-plan room with twin beds. Fold-out bed if needed.
Downstairs: Tiny single bedroom next to bathroom.
Very small downstairs bathroom/toilet, with large shower cubicle and heated towel rail.
Wood burning stove in living room (wood provided). Freestanding radiator in each bedroom.
French and English tv, dvd player, music system with cd player, record turntable and radio.
Large lp library (mainly classical, jazz and 1960s/70s pop), dvds including some for children, some music cds.

South facing terrace with lovely uninterrupted views, perfect for meals outside. Garden furniture, barbecue.
Front garden, rear field (sometimes grazed by cows) and water meadow with stream and spring - wellingtons are needed here!
Pets are welcome, but please note that the garden is not fully enclosed. The lane outside is quiet and used mainly by farm vehicles.

Les Bruyeres is ideal for children, and anyone who enjoys peace and quiet. The spiral staircase, raised terrace, stream and semi-wild grounds make it less suitable for toddlers and those with limited mobility. Pets are welcome, but please note that the garden is not fully enclosed.
Les Bruyeres was our much-loved holiday home for 25 years. Since 2015 we have lived there ourselves during the winter and early spring, letting the cottage during the holiday season and taking the opportunity to explore other parts of France in our camper van.
|Year property purchased||1989|
|Why this location?||We chose this corner of Brittany - very close to Normandy and Pays de Loire too - for its beauty and tranquillity. It's also within convenient distance of three cross-channel ferry ports: St Malo, Caen-Ouistreham and Cherbourg.|
|Unique benefits of property||Peace and quiet! During the summer when the trees are in full leaf, no other buildings can be seen from the house, and with few vehicles passing by, you are more likely to hear birdsong than traffic.|
The Forest of Fougeres (15-20 minutes by car) has woodland walks, a play area, cycle trails and a small lake with a swimming beach.
The medieval castle and town of Fougeres is 25 minutes drive away. The spectacular island town and abbey of Mont St Michel is 1 hour away.
The town of Mortain was used as the German headquarters in World War II, and has 2 picturesque waterfalls.
The walled city of St Malo and its surrounding area has it all - history, fabulous seafood restaurants and amazing beaches between picturesque rocky headlands
The Tour de France will pass close to Les Bruyeres, along the D177 (less than half a mile from the cottage), on Monday 4th July 2016.
We stayed at Les Bruyeres for a week The directions were very clear and concise and we were able to get there without any hiccups or hassle what so ever. The cottage was everything we expected and more to allow us to have a very relaxing time. As it happened the owners were there as we arrived and were very polite and welcoming. They gave us a tour which was not necessary as there is a very helpful guide book in the cottage pointing out all that you need to know about the cottage, its amenities and information for the tourists. The cottage is small in stature but boasts an array of facilities that make staying there so easy. There is an amount of CD’s, DVD’s and literature as well as a very well organised TV and speaker system to have entertainment at your fingertips in what ever language. English and continental sockets and wi fi. The bathroom is small containing a sink, toilet and shower but the shower is spacious having passed the elbow test. The cottage is in very good order and is very clean and easy to keep clean too. I was concerned that the rural setting would mean that we were miles from anything and have troubles getting supplies for our stay but that is quite the opposite. The large super market really does have everything you’d need. There are a couple of bakeries in the village too so its fresh pastries for breakfast every day.
A lovely cottage in idyllic surroundings. The cottage was compact but very attractive and well equipped; good basic cooking equipment, plenty of books to read both for adults and children (ours were 7 and 11), games to play and music to listen to. The beds were comfy and the shower great. The gardens and the area near the stream kept the children busy for many hours playing and spotting dragonflys.
We found there was much to do in the surrounding area. In Fougeres we visited the castle, walked in the woods and visited the nearby botanic garden of Haute Bretagne, just outside the village of Le Chatellier. We also had a great afternoon at the swimming pool at Fougeres where the children enjoyed the outdoor pool and water slides. Further away but within easy reach are Mont-St- Michel and St Malo. Impressive waterfalls and a woodland trail at Mortain, (where the children can paddle) are also recommended.
All in all we had a lovely holiday, in a lovely holiday home!
This was perfect for a peaceful retreat in rural France. The cottage was comfortable and clean with appropriate facilities. We particularly enjoyed using the wood burning stove every evening (even though it was summer time!). There was a great range of creatures, large amd small for nature lovers, including kestrels, buzzards, dragonflies and cows!
The cottage is in a good location to explore nearby Fougeres including the castle, and we had a lovely day out in St Malo.
The advert accurately describes what is a simply delightful cottage and I would highly recommend a stay here.
Thank you so much for your comments,
