La Roche aux Fees (Esse)

Fairies Rock - Essé. One of Europe's best preserved dolmen.
This is one of Brittany's fine Megalithic monuments. It was erected in purple-coloured schist and made up of 42 stones, of which half a dozen weigh between 40 and 45 tons each. It includes a monumental entrance, a portico followed by a low corridor, leading to a vast, partitioned chamber. This Megalithic site seems to have been laid out in the Middle Neolithic Age (4000 B.C.). Research has shown that the stones were moved over nearly 4 km, which was a real achievement in those days.

The medieval centre of the town is attractive to explore with a good number of ancient houses, some of them half-timbered, still intact and often now with small shops at ground floor level.

Because of this historic heritage Châteadegiron is now officially classed as a 'small city of character'.

The most important historic monument here is the Chateau de Chateaugiron, dating back to the 12th century - the chapel is among the parts that date from this time - with several important modifications made in the 18th century including substantial renovations in the 15th century.

Vitré is a historic town in central Brittany, about 25 kilometres east of Rennes in the Ille-et-Vilaine department and an hour and a half from the Brittany coast to the north. Because of its location Vitré is less visited than it would be if nearer the coast - but if you have the time we suggest you make the effort to get here!

Vitré has a very attractive and extensive well maintained old-town centre with lots of narrow streets lined with medieval cottages and a magnificent castle and is perhaps the most impressive medieval town in Brittany.

Vannes - coastal town

Start your visit perhaps at the port, in the south of Vannes. Newly renovated this is an extensive harbour full of boats with a long walkway that follows along the sides of the harbour. This walkway continues on into planted avenues of trees, and if you are feeling energetic it continues for several kilometres until it reaches the popular port and peninsula at Conleau (also recommended).

You can enter the old town through the medieval gate at the northern end of the harbour to discover some very attractive streets to explore, with numerous colombage (half-timbered) houses, making it one of the prettiest towns in Brittany.

Rocambole Gardens

Do not pass through Rennes without visiting the Jardins Rocambole! Ornamental and vegetable gardens, these gardens offer a course that will please both the young and the old. Immerse yourself in their original, colorful and poetic universe. Go through different spaces where plants and metal structures, bricks or glass intermingle. Discover the unusual works of local artists in the exhibition space. End your visit with a picnic or family games on a shaded area.

We have had just spent two wonderful weeks here and had fantastic weather throughout and great fishing. The chalet was lovely and met our expectations and did not lack anything and my only complaint was that we did not use the log fire as it was too hot!
The swimming pool was lovely and we used it every day due to the weather being so hot.
The fishing was slow at times due to the hot weather but I still managed to catch 38 Carp.
I also caught a 30lbs.4oz Carp which beat my PB and was one of the reasons why we came here.
Catch details:-
15 carp under 10lbs, 13 Carp under 20lbs, 9 Carp under 30lbs and the one just over 30lbs which I caught on the float on 6lb line!
Barry was a great host and just left us to it, especially the fishing and we had two nights enjoying a barbecue and quite a few glasses of wine. We only met Kim on the last day as she was ill and still in England, but came to see us on the last day.
Finally, both Barry and Kim met us early on the morning we left which was really very nice.
