About this property

Les Volets Rouges is a Farmhouse with Heated Pool. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Set above the river across rolling countryside of historic Southern Brittany with its medieval villages, varied landscapes and gentle tranquility. Beautifully restored in 2014 Les Volets Rouges is the first of 3 cottages of a 17thC longere set in nearly 2 acres. It comes with a new large 10x5m heated saltwater pool with a clear retractable cover which is great for swimming under in inclement weather. The poolside area is securely fenced with sunny loungers or shady pergolas. There is a private terraced garden and dining area.

The house has been lovingly restored by antiquaires and decorated with a mix of contemporary and local antique finds. The house is light, spacious and comfortable. The traditional lime renders, revealed stonework, beams and local palette of off whites and french greys give a real sense of place. By day skylarks sing incessantly overhead with hoopoes, cuckoos and orioles all chipping in. Evensong is provided by nightinggales and owls.

Le Closel is in the warmest part of Brittany a few 100 metres from the River Vilaine with its cycle paths, cafes and historic riverside towns. It is about a kilometre fron the village with its bar, bakers, mini supermarket, petrol and riverside bar/creperie. The owners live in a neighbouring village (10 mins) with more retaurants, pizzeria, big supermarket with cheap fuel, banks, garages, doctors etc.

The countryside is beautiful and ideal for walking and cycling with dozens of marked routes. Canoeing and day hire cruising is popular on the many local rivers. The Vilaine is famous for its carp, pike, zander and European catfish. The weekly markets at Redon and especially Rennes are amongst the best in France and The Machine (house-sized Jules Verne inspired animatronics) at Nantes are a must.

The Saturday market in the medieval quarter of Rennes is fantastic and a must for foodies or just to people watch with a coffee. Mondays at Redon is smaller but lovely and perfect to wander amongst the timber framed buildings, canal boat museum and boats in the river port. From here La Gacilly is beautiful and houses annual art and photographic exhibition trails. Nantes has The Machine where enormous animatronic machines inspired by Jules Verne are brought to life. If you're unfamiliar with it then Google it; it is unique and impressive. The village of Loheac houses France's equivalent to our Beaulieu car museum for petrol heads. Malansac has its life sized dinosaurs and a nearby tropical garden with animals at liberty and plenty for children including daily parrot shows (actually charming!). Whilst day hire canoeing or cruising along the Vilaine is popular, we like nothing better than gently pedalling along the towpath to a riverside cafe.

We had an amazing, relaxing family holiday in this beautifully restored cottage. The facilities were fantastic and we made lots of use of the super swimming pool, badminton, table tennis, boules and great bikes. When the boys had enough of the sun they also enjoyed choosing from the huge range of DVDs and board games. The owners have thought of everything to cater for a wide range of ages.
The weather was so hot that we didn't venture far from the pool and gardens, however we enjoyed short cycle rides to the nearby village and riverside bar where everyone we met was very friendly. Grand Fougeray is only a short, easy drive away and has a good supermarket and pizzeria and crepe bar.
The owners of the cottage were really friendly and helpful and they gave us good directions as well as useful local advice. The milk and bottle of wine in the fridge was a lovely touch as were the kitchen extras such as cooking oil, tea, coffee, washing up liquid etc.
We took the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo and then only had a straightforward journey of about 2 hours to reach the cottage. This also meant we could easily get to St Malo for the morning ferry departure without having an over night stay.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend the place to our friends and family. This is a holiday we will fondly remember forever! Many thanks Lynn and Scott.

We had a fantastic week in the 'Red' cottage in July. We really enjoyed the cottage and the location. Set on the edge of the village and bordered by farmland, it really is a hideaway, but with that said, it has all you need and shops etc are convenient enough. The cottage is very well maintained and has been modernised where needed yet keeping a lot of the historic charm. The swimming pool, while not very warm, was a perfect distraction as the weather improved and lots of fun is available if spending the day on-site (table tennis, swing ball, bikes can be borrowed and more). It is equally easy to head out to nearby towns and cities and other local attractions. The wildlife is truly awesome! Many birds of prey to be seen, along with plenty of deer and even wild boar if you are lucky enough.
If you have any problems, the owners are 10 or so minutes away and very happy to come and help solve them or just give information about the property and surrounding areas.
All in all, it made a very comfortable base for a week and I've no hesitation in recommending it to people looking for a little comfort off the beaten track.

We stayed at this beautiful property for a week in August. It really has been made a home from home, lots of attention to detail to ensure you have everything you need for a restful holiday. It's set in a peaceful rural area but your only 10 mins to a large super market to get supplies. The gite is stunning inside and was spotlessly clean. We were greeted with a warm welcome from one of the owners and he couldn't of been more helpful. They had even left a nice bottle of wine in the fridge. The pool area was great for the boys and with other families there too they had playmates. There is a wee pub/restaurant a short cycle from the property, set on the river, worth a visit. Lots of safe cycle paths and tow paths to use also. The only negative was that it doesn't have air con or fans upstairs, it's very hot at night so a fan in each bedroom would be a useful addition. Other than that it is perfect!! We'll definitely be back in years to come.
