Set above the river across rolling countryside of historic Southern Brittany with its medieval villages, varied landscapes and gentle tranquility. Beautifully restored in 2014 the Les Volets Vertes is the last and substancially the largest of 3 cottages of a 17thC longere set in nearly 2 acres. It comes with a new large 10 x 5m heated salt water pool with a clear retractable cover which is great for swimming under in inclement weather. The poolside area is securely fenced with sunny loungers or shady pergolas.
There is a private garden and dining area.
The house has been lovingly restored by antiquaires and decorated with a mix of contemporary and local antique finds. The house is large (200m2), light, spacious and comfortable. The traditional lime renders, revealed stonework, beams and local palette of off whites and french greys give a real sense of place.
Le Closel is in the warmest part of Brittany a few 100 metres from the River Vilaine with its cycle paths, cafes and historic riverside towns. It is just off the edge of a village with a mini supermarket, bakery, bar and riverside bar/creperie. The owners live in a neighbouring village which offers a large supermarket with S/Stn, garages, banks, pizzeria, restaurants, bakers, doctors etc. The countryside is beautiful and ideal for walking and cycling with dozens of marked routes. Canoeing and day hire cruising is popular on the many local rivers. The Vilaine is famous for its carp, pike, zander and European catfish. The weekly markets at Redon and especially Rennes are amongst the best in France and The Machine (house-sized Jules Verne inspired animatronics) at Nantes are a must.
Large, bright well appointed kitchen/diner with farmhouse table, 18thC armoire, range cooker, washing machine, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave etc. Eclectic mix of antique and handmade kitchen furniture providing everything you'll need at this home from home.
The oldest part of the longere this huge living room was built c1670 and has been lovingly restored with original painted beams, tiled floor and typical local fireplace with woodburner. There is a pair of large comfortable contemporary leather sofas, flat screen tv with UK satellite channels and a 19thC display table rescued from the Galleries Lafayette in Paris. Dual aspect french doors opening onto private seating area with pergola, loungers, barbecue etc or the drive, lawn and wildflower meadow to the front.
Large downstairs bedroom off the living room has a king size antique lit bateau, 18thc armoire, exuberant dressing table and ensuite with washbasin, wc and 140cm infinity shower.
Upstairs there are another 3 large bedrooms;
Gable bedroom with full height ceiling and french doors with Juliette balcony looking over the pool and countryside with larger than king size antique corbeille bed, armoire and en suite with washbasin, wc and 140cm infinity shower.
Full height twin room with a wonderfully exuberant pair of antique italian marriage beds and matching furniture. Local naive marriage armoire I just had to keep.
Second twin bedroom again has a full height ceiling with a pair of contemporary single beds and an antique upholstered lit bateau day bed. View over the wildflowers and fields .
The twin room is also full height with exposed carpentry and a pair of single beds.
Off the entrance is a downstairs cloakroom with wc and washbasin.
The downstairs master bedroom has an en suite with washbasin, wc and 140cm infinity shower.
Upstairs master bedroom also has a washbasin, wc and 140cm infinity shower.
Upstairs family bathroom has a pair of washbasins set in an antique marble topped washstand, shower, wc and original victorian roll top bath.
The living room has a 12kw woodburner. In the kitchen is a super efficient aerothermal heatpump. The bedrooms have radiators and most have heat vents cunningly piped from the woodburner. The bathroom has a heated towel rail and vent from the woodburner (toasty!).
Flatscreen satellite tv and DVDin the living room. There is a library of 100 films plus over 30 Disney and Pixars for younger visitors. A selection of books, games and well maintained bikes are available. Wi-fi.
Set in nearly 2 acres of grounds with a new large, fenced 10 x 5m shared heated saltwater pool with retractable clear cover. There is a large poolside paved area with sunloungers and shady pergolas. There is a Wendy house, swings and outdoor table tennis table. The house has its own private seating area, barbecue and terraced garden leading to shared orchard, lawns, play area with large trampoline and 1/3 acre of flowering meadow.
Private parking infront of the house.
The Saturday market in the medieval quarter of Rennes is fantastic and a must for foodies or just to people watch with a coffee. Mondays at Redon is smaller but lovely and perfect to wander amongst the timber framed buildings, canal boat museum and boats in the river port. From here La Gacilly is beautiful and houses annual art and photographic exhibition trails. Nantes has The Machine where enormous animatronic machines inspired by Jules Verne are brought to life. If you're unfamiliar with it then Google it; it is unique and impressive. The village of Loheac houses France's equivalent to our Beaulieu car museum for petrol heads. Malansac has its life sized dinosaurs and a nearby tropical garden with animals at liberty and plenty for children including daily parrot shows (actually charming!). Whilst day hire canoeing or cruising along the Vilaine is popular, we like nothing better than gently pedalling along the towpath to a riverside cafe.
We stayed here at this lovely gite in the last two weeks of August 2015. Other than the slightly dodgy weather in the second week we have a great time.
The rooms in the gite are large, clean and well equipped. The pool is large enough for three families and was always heated nicely. There was also Table Tennis, Badminton and loads of board games and DVD's.
We made good use of the bikes provided - cycling down to the town in the morning to the boulangerie. Also along the towpath both towards Rennes and Redon (although we didn't attempt to go all the way to either). Lovely flat and easy cycle.
We made use of the local supermarkets as although the restaurants we visited were nice there were not a huge number open in the surrounding area. Having said this 'La Belle Vilaine' is walking distance down by the river - despite looking like a wooden shack the food was outstanding.
Good things to go:
La Baule beach (1 1/2 hrs away) - very quiet and huge
Foret Adventure (1 hr) - Much better that go-ape -
Kayak (1/2 hrs) 1 way trip along
Parc Prehistoric (1hr) - info in English as well as French
Cycling....from the gite
The owners were really helpful - even sourcing a mid-size bike so that we could all go out.
Would definitely recommend.
Wonderful weeks stay in this newly refurbished large cottage. Our family loved the quiet garden, the swimming pool and the house itself. The owners had thought through how to create a 'home away from home' and were extremely helpful with information and friendly cheerful support. Thank you Lyn and Scot.
A great place to stay for peace and quiet and to relax. This large gite easily accommodated our family giving enough personal space for everyone. The swimming pool and the children's play area were an added and welcome bonus. A car is essential as local amenities and places of interest are not literally on the doorstep. The owners were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive.
We would definitely recommend Les Volets Vert.
