|Year property purchased||2016|
|Why this location?||The lakeside setting is exceptional and extremely rare.
It took us 25 years to find this idyllic spot.
|Unique benefits of property||Five acre lake full of fish 10 metres from our front door.
Extensive landscaped grounds and gardens.
Le Cottage is well placed for visiting Mt.St.Michel, St.Malo, Avranches, Parc Floral de Haute Bretagne, Combourg (beautiful Chateau), Fougeres with its massive 13th Century fortress, Cancale (Picturesque harbours/centre for oyster production), St.Hilaire du Harcouet with its typically French market on a Wednesday morning. Granville and Iles Chausey.
Golf - a driving range is 10 minutes away and 18 hole courses can be found @ Granville & Dol de Bretagne, both under an hour away.
There are also a number of well marked walks in the vicinity. The area is also ideal for exploration by bicycle.
There are several good restaurants in the area in Fougeres, Louvigne and Ducey.
We had no hesitation in returning again this year to this idyllic property, ‘Le Cottage’. It is peaceful, charming, well appointed and cleaner than any other gîte in which we have stayed. The owners are very helpful and more like hosts, if you need help or advice.
It deserves a 10/10 review in all categories from us as we do not want to be able to walk to a supermarket or Michelin starred restaurant, although these are available a short drive away. We prefer to be in proper French countryside (who wouldn’t?) but we have reflected that the property is in a rural location by adjusting our score for local amenities.
The location is well placed for visiting the Brittany coast – Dinan, Dinard and St Malo still have the wow factor. The famous Mont St Michel is even closer and not as exciting as when you had to choose low tide to make your visit (it can be very busy midsummer). Normandy and Avranches is to the north and the fantastic castle at Fougères and the pretty town of Vitré lie to the south.
This pretty gite is set in the middle of beautiful countryside and alongside a 5 hectre size lake which is owned conveniently by the owners of the gite itself, Jan and Frances, who reside in the old moulin closeby. The several acres of land surrounding half the lake (which is also owned by Jan and Frances) is full of apple orchards and pastureland where we were delighted to wander and feed the lama and goats grazing in adjoining fields. The gite contains all modern conveniences and the kitchen is particularly well stocked with all necessary equipment. The lounge/dining room area was extremely spacious and comfortable, again with a plentiful supply of dining equipment. The double bedroom and twin bedroom were reasonable sized with very comfortable beds. As an alternative to eating indoors there was a lovely patio area overlooking the lake for those el fresco dining experiences under the stars.
There are superb surrounding countryside walks alongside the corn fields which were about to be harvested. Within a mile of the gite were two beautifully quaint villages where you could linger for a bite to eat with the locals. 30 Euros for a superb 3 course meal for two, coupled with a litre of red wine, was great value.
Finally, Jan and Frances, couldn't have been more accommodating to make it a great holiday.
The accommodation was good the setting perfect. Peace and tranquillity throughout the break. Jan and Frances were perfect hosts on hand with advice as to the best fishing spots or samples of home made jam. The fishing was good with carp to over 28lb. Overall a very enjoyable holiday at a venue that I would recommend
Many thanks Mark, Sue & Maureen, for your positive review & comments.
Glad you enjoyed the holiday.
Will update you regarding our improvements.
We hope to see you again.
Frances & Jan.
All mod cons v clean. BBQ is a joke, inaccurate details of fishing facilities on website. Jan knows everything about everything only place we have ever had to pay for election plus a cleaning charge (we left it spotless). Will not be returning
We regret your negative comments. When you arrived at 10.15 a.m. on Sat. 29 June (normal arrival time is after 4 p.m.), we were still cleaning the cottage following the departure of our previous guests earlier that morning. We therefore tried to accommodate you from the outset.
Early on during the stay, when we offered you charcoal for the BBQ, we advised you that the built-in BBQ was not up to scratch. As you know, we have since purchased a portable Weber BBQ for guest use.
Fishing facilities are clearly stated on the HFD website & our own ( www.lemoulindeschateaux.com). The Ts & Cs are also explicit (s.5.4 The Lake), & we sent you our Fishing Note. Jan indicated exactly where you could fish & where were the best places, having arranged for a local contractor to remove the remaining snags from one of the spots. He even offered to take your equipment by tractor & trailer to this spot further up the lake, where a number of large fish have been caught this year, but you did not take this up.
Electricity usage & cleaning charges are also indicated in the Ts & Cs (6.1 & 10) & on both websites.
Other similar properties with HFD ( some without a lake on-site) charge approximately the same weekly rate.
We also did not request payment of the security deposit which we & other owners levy.
As all our other guests have provided positive reviews & high scores, we would ask you to reconsider your comments & submit a new review.
Regards, Frances & Jan.
