Chez Lilas is a beautifully restored artisan's cottage located in a rural hamlet, close to the dramatic coastlines of Brittany and Normandy. The cottage was built around 200 years ago to accommodate farm workers. Today, Chez Lilas offers charm, character and creature comforts - a far cry from the days when people had to share the house with their farm animals.
Chez Lilas sleeps 4 people in 2 bedrooms. The spectacular master bedroom was completed in 2019 by converting a huge attic space. The bedroom features a modern en suite bathroom, an antique French double bed in hand carved walnut and the exposed beams that supported the original roof structure. It has high ceilings and is flooded with light from the large windows front and back. The second bedroom is set up as a twin room. Guests have use of a modern family bathroom with a spa shower.
The cottage has fully enclosed gardens to the front and rear. The back garden has a decked area which catches the sun at breakfast time - perfect for an alfresco start to the day. The large front garden faces south and is in full sun for most of the day in the summer months. It's a great spot for a barbecue, or a plate of local oysters washed down with champagne if you feel like something a little special.
The surrounding area will leave you spoilt for choice for activities and great days out. Within a short drive of Chez Lilas you will find wonderful beaches, medieval castles, water parks, tree-top walks, historic chateaux, great markets and of course, fabulous French food.
Cyclists in particular will love the traffic-free lanes through ancient villages and charming towns. The ride to Mont St Michel offers mainly flat miles out to the coast. Those seeking a stiffer challenge should head inland where the rolling countryside presents some challenging climbs.
The cottage is very easy to get to: the ferry ports of Caen and Cherbourg are less than two hours' drive away; the port of St Malo is even closer, just an hour away, as is Dinard Airport which is served by Ryanair.
It's just a mile to the nearest sleepy village with its own patisserie, butcher and convenience store; and a few minutes drive to a larger town with restaurants, shops, banks and big supermarket.
We took ownership of Chez Lilas almost 20 years ago and we still find new things to do every time we visit. We are sure you will love the time you spend there as much as we do.
Fully fitted kitchen with a microwave, gas oven and hob, dishwasher and washing machine. There is a dining table for 4 people and plenty of glassware, crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment. A highchair is available on request for smaller visitors.
The centrepiece of the cosy living room is definitely our beautiful granite fireplace. Legend has it the granite blocks were looted from a grand mansion during the revolution. The logburner provides the heating for the cottage, although there are electric radiators too should the need arise. The room has a large comfy sofa and armchair, and a large-screen tv with a satellite decoder so all your favourite free-to-air channels from the UK are available. In addition, we have great wifi so you can bring your Apple tv and watch Netflix with your own login details.
Upstairs we have a second sitting room with another tv/dvd player and a supply of books, games and movies. A good place to stash the kids if you need some downtime!
Our stunning main bedroom has recently been renovated, however we have maintained many of the original features including the roof beams. It is a now a beautiful oasis complete with an antique hand-carved French double bed.

The second bathroom has a big walk-in spa-style shower unit with wall jets, overhead 'rainfall' shower and a separate hand-held shower. It also has a wc and vanity unit.
A large log fire provides most of our heat, with secondary electric radiators and oil heaters in the bedrooms for added comfort.
The cottage is stocked with a good supply of books, games and dvds for all ages. There are two tvs, a dvd player and a satellite decoder providing all free-to-air channels from the UK. My husband and I are both busy journalists and our French cottage is our little bolthole in the countryside. We love everything about France - the food, the wine, the beautiful scenery. Our daughter is also a big fan, and we have spent many happy summers here. We've also spent a lot of time on renovations. There's still work to be done (isn't there always!) but we have made it into a comfortable home for holidaymakers.
