Greg is now in his 27th year of owning and renting luxury holiday accommodation. He renovated La Garenne and its beautiful thatched cottages, which were in a state of disrepair when purchased. Our caretaker, Jeanine, has also been looking after the gites and their gardens for over 25 years, caring for them as if they were her own. Jeanine is French through and through, she is extremely welcoming and will be more than happy to help you if you wish to practise your French!

|Why this location?||Our sensational spot by the River Blavet will blow you away with its insurmountable views and of the River as it meanders up the Valley, which is celebrated by the French for its beauty and greenery with the name 'La Vallee Verte'. All our four thatched cottages have outstanding views and provide the perfect setting for families, friends, large groups, romantics and honeymooners. La Garenne is peaceful and quiet with everything you could wish for to enjoy your inimitable escape - some of our guests choose to spend their entire stay on site, enjoying relaxing by the pool, playing sports in our extensive gardens, ambling along the river towpath or hiring bikes and having them delivered to the door so that they can cycle for miles in either direction! |Unique benefits of property||To compliment the range of activities at home, if you choose to head out and about you will be equally spoilt for choice! Within 30 minutes, we have a multitude of sandy beaches, Breton towns, markets for each day of the week, traditional French restaurants, chateaux, megalithic standing stones, Celtic festivals, mountain bike trails, golf courses, horse riding stables and many more adventures to keep you occupied!|
Visit Auray with its quaint cobbled streets, excellent shops, bars, restaurants and picturesque harbour area surrounded by half-timbered houses. Market day held on Monday is lovely here.
There are several sandy beaches 20-30 minutes by car from La Garenne ranging from the vast sweeping sands of Guidel (see photos) in the West to Lamour Plage, Port Louis, Etel, Erderven and a little further, the famous and popular Carnac beach (see photos) to the South.
The famous Megalithic stones at Carnac run for miles and are better than Stonehenge! We highly recommend a visit as they are said to be one of the most important sites in the Ancient World. See the "grand menhir" now fallen over and in 3 giant pieces, it would have stood 20 metres high and weighed nearly 300 tonnes!
A stunning chateau 15 minutes from La Garenne also on the banks of the River Blavet. Mouth-watering Michelin star food for a special occasion.
There are 5 golf courses within 45 minutes' drive, the nearest being less than 30 minutes away. The golf courses in France are very well prepared and not as busy as the UK.
Hennebont has a great market held on Thursday mornings and is around 10 minutes' drive. There are also some interesting old battlements to explore and a magnificent church. Every town, small or large, has a different market day so there is one every day of the week. We have a list of all the days and towns in the housebook at La Garenne.
There is a great kayaking school on the River Blavet 10 minutes from La Garenne. This is a fantastic fun morning or afternoon for all the family.
Our local town has a fantastic creperie, pizzeria and a more traditional French restaurant. All good value.
A really fine restaurant, terrific food and decor. An ideal place for lunch after the fantastic Thursday morning market.
Pont Scorff Zoo only about 20 minutes away is fun for all the family - even teenagers (my 2 loved it). The Penguin feeding is a highlight and many of our visitors have also commented on how much they enjoyed it.
Poul Fetan is a magnificently restored medieval village 'museum' just 10 to 15 minutes' drive from La Garenne. In Summer they dress in period costume and there are demonstrations of arts and crafts from a bygone era.
The Quiberon Peninsula is a good excursion, drive down the wild 'Cote Sauvage' on the Atlantic side then return and relax beside the calmer waters of Quiberon and its beach on the leeward side. This can be incorporated with a day at Carnac and its beach (also sheltered by the Quiberon Peninsula).
Just a 5-10 minute stroll along the towpath. Excellent good value food. Ideal for long lazy lunches with a walk back to La Garenne beside the river.
The 'county town' Vannes is an extremely attractive and well preserved medieval town. In our view, a must visit place; there are beautiful gardens in Summer in front of the old city walls. Half-timbered houses overhang the cobbled streets; cafes, creperies, bars, restaurants, great shops and plenty of charm make a visit to Vannes an unforgettable experience. Go for the market on Wednesday or Saturday morning.
