Beaches and Swimming

There are several beautiful swimming lakes with beaches, picnic areas and watersports and outdoor swimming pools all within 15 minutes from La Cour. The nearest beaches are located in the charming French holiday towns of Damgan and Penestin, both with stunning sandy beaches and a good selection of shops and restaurants, just 37 miles from cottage to beach. The larger resorts of LaTurballe & La Baule, where white sandy beaches stretch for several miles, are also within easy reach.

Bird-watching

Within a stones throw of La Cour you will find the Rivers Vilaine and the Don where you can watch the many herons and birds of prey. The surrounding area is perfectly placed for the annual migratory flights. That means in spring and in autumn a wide range of species are ready and waiting to be spotted and ticked off your list. Our best known area is the Regional National Park of Briere which has 42,000 acres of wetlands to be explored, it is an important winter haven for ducks and geese, sandpipers and wading birds.

Canoeing and Kayaking

There are several places where you can hire canoes and kayaks for canoeing either rivers or lakes. If you prefer a more relaxed way of messing about on the water, just 15 minutes away is La Gacilly which offers day boats for up to 6 people for hire. Windsurfing and other nautical sports are also on offer at several lakes and beaches in the area.

Cycling

The area is a cyclists paradise! Why not make use of the large selection of bicycles available for you to use to explore the area. On your doorstep you have a cycle path adjacent to the River Vilaine where you can follow the meandering river in the direction of the historic town of Redon and the coast or head north towards the city of Rennes. If you prefer, you can design your own routes using the many rarely used minor roads and cycle past the expanse of meadows & countryside and pass through the local quaint villages.

Family Attractions

Les Naudieres Park is a great attraction park offering a fun day out. Karting, 15 different huge bouncy castles, the luge and plenty more to keep the whole family amused. Branfere Park offers an open air animal park with interesting animals from around the world. Set in the grounds of Chateau Branfere the children will love to feed some of the animals. Tepacap Park is a fantastic outdoor activity theme park set around a lake for children, offering different areas for different age groups.

Fishing

La Cour Cottages are situated in a region named Les Trois Rivieres (The Land of the 3 Rivers). Just 5 minutes from La Cour you reach the banks of the meandering River Vilaine as it flows towards Redon. The area offers plenty of opportunities to fish both in rivers and lakes. You will also find a great private fishing lake only a couple of minutes away at Le Clos Morin, just outside Masserac.

Golf

The closest golf course to La Cour is in the beautiful grounds of the Chateau at Missillac only 30 minutes away. Also in the grounds you can take advantage of the tennis courts and angling ponds. Other nearby courses are at Savenay (40 mins) & Caden (45 mins).

Horse and Pony Riding

Close by are several equestrian centres offering pony rides through forests and around lakes, lessons and even donkey rides.

On the Doorstep!

Begin your day by taking a gentle stroll to the friendly boulangerie in our local village of Masserac for your fresh bread & croissants for breakfast. The village also offers a traditional French cafe bar with large screen tv for any important sporting events, a small grocery shop, a hairdressing salon and a Health, Beauty and Well Being centre. Another 10 minutes away is the lively town of Guemene Penfao where you will find supermarkets, an indoor swimming pool, canoe hire for paddling along the River Don and pony trekking. Fishing enthusiasts can take advantage of the many lakes and rivers surrounding La Cour and the private fishing lake just a couple of minutes away from the cottages.

Towns and Cities

If you prefer a more relaxed way of life why not visit the ancient trading town of Redon where the Nantes-Brest Canal meets the River Vilaine and explore the many shops, weekly open air market and indoor/outdoor swimming pool. There are many beautiful towns and cities in the area. The stunning medieval walled town of Guerande located in the salt mining area with its artisan shops, open air market, museums and cathedral. Vannes a beautiful fortified city has an old centre of cobbled streets, cathedral, beautiful gardens all on the mouth of the River Vannes. Nantes on the River Loire is often cited as being one of the best cities in France to live in. Visit the Gothic Cathedral, the Chateau des Ducs de Bretagne, the mechanical elephant and Jules Verne Museum or merely relax on a lunch or dinner cruise on the waterways. As the name suggests, Chateaubriant is the home to a magnificent medieval castle as well as the renowned Chateaubriant steak. A beautiful Roman church, a bustling weekly market, charming architecture and a stunning glass theatre in this historic town. Rennes the capital of Brittany with its Parliament building symbolising Brittany's glorious past, many shops and restaurants scattered throughout the restored streets and squares and outstanding buildings by famous architects.

Walking

You can enjoy a gentle stroll through woodlands and around small lakes and then make your way down to the River Vilaine and follow it as it meanders across open fields and past picturesque hamlets & villages. There are many waymarked walking trails around the cottages to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside.
