The setting is idyllic. We thoroughly enjoyed out 2 weeks in this beautiful, quiet and rural Brittany setting. The owners (who are literally at the bottom of the garden) were lovely and very helpful when needed, and did not intrude at all. We cannot fault them. However, I would provide the following caution if taking small children:
- We did struggle with the cottage layout (my kids are aged 2 and 6) - there is no lounge area or separate toilet downstairs (other than the en suite attached to the downstairs bedroom). The layout of the upstairs bedrooms was also not ideal as the rooms were too far away from each other (especially if you need to tend to them during the night). The space downstairs is huge - and definitely room enough to make into a living room area. I couldn't leave the children upstairs unattended.
- The swimming pool does not have a shallow end and a deep end - it is a uniform 5ft deep. I didn't realise this until my 6 year old had jumped in and couldn't touch the bottom (there are no signs) - fortunately he can swim!
- WiFi is essentially non-existent; we were only able to link to it when sat on the decking area at the back of the house. This was fine in the great weather we had, but you will struggle if its wet. The router sits in the adjoining holiday cottage, but the walls are so thick, its untraceable anywhere else in the house.
- The beams truly make the character of the house, but beware - at 5'7" I struggled with height of the ones upstairs
Maison de Maitre was a perfect holiday home for us . We travelled with 2 couples , 2 children aged 10 and 12 , and a friend . It was perfect to have a bathroom in each bedroom , each with constant hot water . The cottage was clean with everything we needed to cook everynight . The only thing we missed was a toaster , but that wasn't a problem .The owners lived at the back of the garden , which we were a little concerned about when we arrived , as we like to sit outside whenever we can and enjoy some wine in the evenings .... but there was nothing to be concerned about , they were there if we needed any advice , but didn't seem to worry about us enjoying ourselves at all , and were friendly and helpful on arrival & when we left .
The cottage is in beautiful surroundings , with many lovely towns nearby to visit , but nothing we could walk to easily ..... we did walk into ruffiac and back one day which was lovely , but a long walk there and back for the kids (it took 45 mins each way ) , but there is a taxi service in Ruffiac if needed , along with all the essentials of bakers , butchers and supermarket . also a café/restaurant and tabac / bar .
We had a thoroughly enjoyable time , although unlucky with the cloudy weather - the kids still went in the pool every day .
The property was even bigger than we expected but more information about the pool would have been helpful ie it is not heated and it's depth and access do not make it suitable for all members of the family. Everything was in beautiful condition and the kitchen was very well equipped. We found the owner to be very helpful. The area was great and we really enjoyed the chateau in Josselin with the doll museum, La Gacilly summer photo exhibition,Le Poete ferilleur, L'Insectarium in Lizio were wonderful. The restaurant Le Grain de sel in Malestroit was first class
Lovely place, idea for three generations, the grandchildren had a ball, with the pool, the swings and slides, and the chickens, bedrooms very generous size, beds very comfortable, mind your heads on the low beams though..kitchen well appointed, plenty of bathrooms, with lashings of hot water, could do with more seating in lounge as its an 8 berth property, and more storage in the kitchen for food, which i think is under way..... would we go again??? MOST DEFINITELY..
