La Chaumière (previously called La Grande) is one of four charming gites at Gites Guebernez, a peaceful retreat surrounded by beautiful countryside but within walking distance of a village with a bakery, restaurants and bars. The gites share a heated pool and decked sun terrace with views across farmland and forests. For children, there's also an indoor games room, swings and slides and plenty of toys. For grown-ups, there are sunbeds, quiet shady corners and pretty countryside walks.
Gites Guebernez has been in The Guardian newspaper, which described it as 'a gorgeous spot – a cluster of mellow stone buildings with wooden shutters, amid rolling farmland and forest'.
Made of local granite, La Chaumière is typically Breton in style and has lots of rustic charm and a wood fire burner. It sleeps 6, plus cots, and has a large open plan living and dining space, making it ideal for a large family or 2 families sharing. The well-equipped kitchen has a dishwasher. There are 2 double bedrooms and a bunk room, a downstairs bathroom with a shower and a second upstairs with a bath. The gite has outside space with tables and chairs and a barbecue. The gite has wi-fi and there is a laundry room on site with a washing machine.
We are within walking distance of the pretty village of Ploerdut, with a bakers, grocery shop selling local produce, a pizzeria/creperie, a hugely popular restaurant (3 courses and wine for just €12), 2 bars, and a small weekly market. Within easy reach (10-15 minutes drive) are several lakes with child friendly beaches, boating and other watersports, while stunning sandy beaches are just a 40-minute drive.
Guebernez is the perfect spot for families, but outside of the school holidays it becomes a peaceful retreat for walkers, cyclists, writers and those who want to experience the tranquility of central Brittany, with its rolling countryside, forests and lakes, but still be within easy reach of the beaches and islands of the Morbihan coastline.
The newly refurbished kitchen has large wooden worktops, dishwasher, microwave, gas oven and hob, kettle, coffee-maker and a double sink. The dining table can seat 6-8 comfortably. We also have highchairs for babies.
The open-plan living room has a wood burning fire, a tv/dvd player, 2 large comfortable sofas, a sofabed, a large rug and plenty of games.
There are 2 spacious double bedrooms and a bunk room for the children.
A downstairs bathroom has a toilet and shower while a large bathroom upstairs has a bath too.
The gite has a wood fire burner and we can provide additional electric heaters in the cooler months.
The heated pool is great for little ones. It is surrounded by a large decked terrace with beautiful countryside views all around. An indoor gamesroom has table tennis, pool, Wii console, a boxing punch bag, fitness mats, fancy dress box, games, books and dvds. The gites have free wi-fi access. We have freeview English tv in the gites and plenty of dvds. For children we have a puppet theatre and treasure hunts.
The gites are surrounded by two acres of pretty gardens with lovely sunny spots for sunbathing or quiet spots in the shade. There are beautiful views all around. The large front lawn is great for football, volley ball or badminton, and there's a swing and slide for the children. The boules pitch has been positioned to take advantage of the evening sun. We also have a party barn which guests are welcome to use at any time, complete with a chandelier and fairy lights, 2 large bench tables, and a wood fire burner.
We grow our own vegetables and flowers in our veggie patch and share these with guests, depending on the season. We usually also have eggs to share from our free-range chickens (which are popular with the children).
There is plenty of parking space onsite and places to store bikes.
La Chaumière is suitable for guests of all ages, but there is no wheelchair access.
There is a laundry room on site, which is shared by guests. There are also 2 rotary dryers and clothes horses.
Bev, Warren and their son Freddie are originally from Brighton but had always talked about escaping the city and living the 'good life'. In 2010 they took a trip to Brittany 'just to have a look' and fell in love with Gites Guebernez. Now in their sixth year, they've added a third gite, a pool, a games room and made countless other improvements. Well integrated into village life, they've also taken the time to fully explore the region and are full of tips about what to see and do nearby.

|Why this location?||Close enough to the coast but with all the benefits of rural life - more space, hardly any traffic, cosy and inexpensive village restaurants - Guebernez ticked all the boxes. As soon as we came down the drive and saw the beautiful setting and the little cluster of stone cottages, we knew this was the place. Although we're a short walk to the village, we're surrounded by rolling countryside and the views are amazing. We've even got our own party barn and, behind it, the old bread oven, once used by the farm community that lived here.|
|Unique benefits of property||Rural setting but within reach of the village, comfortable and clean but with rustic charm, fabulous views all around, especially from the pool terrace, indoor games room for rainy days, a large party barn which guests are welcome to use for special occasions or for dining any time, so much space for children to run around, quiet country lanes for walking from our doorstep, and a veggie patch with veggies to share, and specialist weeks in the spring and autumn - walking, photography and yoga.|
Brittany’s largest lake, the Lac de Guerledan is a vast stretch of water with several sandy beaches, restaurants, cafes, and walking and cycling trails. The Abbaye de Bon Repos is a 12th-century Cistercian abbey on the Nantes-Brest canal which hosts regular exhibitions, a Sunday craft market and a spectacular Son et Lumiere in August. The nearby Lac de Bel Air at Priziac (10 mins drive) has a small sandy beach, play area, picnic tables, and a café. It’s also popular for kayaking, sailing, and fishing and is surrounded by walking and fitness trails. There is a great Sunday market at Larmor Plage, our closest beach. It also has a small beachfront promenade with restaurants and cafes. Nearby is the Plage de Locqueltas, a long sandy beach with rock pools. The other best beaches are at Guidel, Le Pouldu, Erdeven, Gavres, Port Manec'h, all within an hour's drive. For a day out, head to Pont Aven, an attractive little town with lovely riverside walks, restaurants, galleries, boutiques and a colourful summer flower festival in August. Take a boat ride from Pont Aven down the Aven and Belon rivers and estuaries. Or, go to the historic harbour city of Vannes or the town of Auray and the neighbouring port of St-Goustan, with cobbled streets of half-timbered houses which are now boutiques, galleries, restaurants and cafes. From June to September boat trips operate around the little islands in the Gulf of Morbihan. Carnac is famous for its unique rows of ancient standing stones and also has a lovely sandy beach. The Parc Odet Loisirs Kerrun Moustoir is a seven-hectare park, set around a lake, that's great for kids with giant slides, zip wires, and other attractions. Parc Aquanature is an 80-hectare park with 140 deer and other wildlife. You can either take a tour in a 4x4 or drive yourself around in a golf cart. They're fast!
