We both wanted to change our lifestyle, and could not think of a more perfect place than here in beautiful Brittany.
|Year property purchased||2016|
|Why this location?||We are surrounded by many small cities of character, theme parks, lakes (some with beaches), forests and standing stones, and yet only 45 minutes from the sea.
With its own microclimate, Morbihan (little sea in Breton) regularly enjoys a warmer and drier climate than the rest of Brittany.
|Unique benefits of property||La Vieille Ferme (The Old Farmhouse) at Gayon, was once a working farm, and is now a tastefully renovated traditional stone longere, offering holidays in Morbihan, Southern Brittany. We live at the far end of the property, so are on hand to help with any enquiries or suggestions.
With UK flights which could take as little as an hour, and plenty of ferries, we are very easily accessible.
Our nearest village, Ruffiac, is only 2 minutes drive away, or a 25 minute stroll, with a baker for morning croissants, a butcher for delicious local meat, a well-stocked supermarket, a church, two welcoming bars and a restaurant.
We are only 10 minutes from picturesque Malestroit and La Gacilly, close to Josselin and Rochefort-en-Terre, not far from the Nantes-Brest canal, and not forgetting the wonderful coastline of the Gulf of Morbihan.
Malestroit is our nearest town, with charming medieval houses and the Nantes-Brest canal running through it. It has a vibrant music scene, live music on the canal in summer, and is home to festival Au Pont du Rock in July. With 4 supermarkets, restaurants, bars, banks/ATMs and many shops, its cobbled streets are a joy to walk round.
Beautiful Rochfort-en-Terre, classed as 2016 Village Préféré des Français, is a delight to visit in summer, but even more stunning in winter, with all its twinkling fairy lights throughout the picturesque cobbled town. It is only 40 minutes away and well worth a visit.
A few minutes’ drive away is La Gacilly, well-known thanks to the family of Yves Rocher, and home of the annual photographic exhibition, displaying amazing giant canvases throughout the town, between June and September.
There are many lovely nearby lakes, including the Lac au Duc at Ploërmel, which not only has a fabulous hyrangea walk, but boasts a huge array of watersports, fishing, inland beach, and a golf course, and is only 20 minutes away.
Cyclists will find the quiet roads a pleasure. There are numerous cycle paths and we are close to the Voie Verte from St Malo to Questembert, and of course the wonderful canalside routes. And for the more adventurous, there are mountain bike centres, one particularly near the beautiful Roche Saint Bernard.
I have given a 10 rating because it really was all these things. A clean, well-appointed gite in a delightful rural setting, yet easy to get to local attractions and the coast. I highly recommend it and will definitely stay there again.
