About this property

Large House and Garden, Nantes-Brest Canal. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

This beautiful modern spacious house is nestled in the countryside in a tranquil setting, just outside the village so is not remote and is within easy reach of all local amenities. The extensive gardens gently slope down towards a river which borders the property.

After a busy day, relax on the patio, sip a glass of wine and take in the beauty and unwind from the hectic life that we all seem to lead. For the less energetic, try the comfy sunloungers and light up the barbecue for a long leisurely lunch.

There is plenty to occupy children. We have a gamesroom with bar, football, a darts board and many other games. The space allows the grown ups some much needed peace and quiet. Early or late in the season the cosy, comfortable lounge is the perfect place to be, with a roaring log fire, Satellite TV or just listen to some music on the dvd player.
We are within easy reach of the town of Carhaix. Here you will find many restaurants and bars and again for the children, there is an amazing swimming pool with a flume and Jacuzzi. Once a week Carhaix hosts its local market, here you will find such a selection of breads, cheeses, hams, wonderful fresh vegetables and a host of other locally produced fare, a visit to the market is a must. Take a walk or cycle ride from the house on one of the many paths following the one of many planned trails.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Liz and David Waterfall

Liz has worked in hospitality for most of her career and Dave works in the construction industry. We have always had a passion for the French culture, landscapes, history and of course the food and drink. We hope you enjoy the house and Breton countryside as much as we do.

We have four grown up children and two adorable grand daughters.

Year property purchased 2006
Why this location? It is central to exploring the North, South and West coasts rather than visiting the same places. It is also by the Nantes-Brest canal, for walking and cycling.
Unique benefits of property The property is large and in extensive grounds so it's fabulous to spread out and not feel confined in a small area. There a 4 bikes available so you don't need to transport your own!

The Owner Recommends

Markets and fresh food

There is a weekly market in Carhaix and many others in surrounding areas. We love buying local produce from the supermarket including fish, cheese, butter, jams, wines and cider.

Cycling routes from the house and beyond for serious riders - a magical place!

There are a number of off-road cycling paths from the house which are designated circuits. We recently went on a 3 hour ride with the children to Poullaoen, stopping on the benches along the way for a rest and having our picnic in the old French village by the church. We passed a number of people during the day, all ages!

Walking along the Nantes Brest canal and disused railway tracks for recreation

At the heart of Brittany, Carhaix-Plouguer enjoys an ideal location for exploring the great cities of the region, and enjoy an exceptional nature, especially in the Black Mountains and the Arrée Mountains. Its historic heritage is also important, the capital of Poher being one of the oldest cities in the west of France. Built there over 2,000 years by the Romans, the city of Carhaix-Plouguer present today many archaeological remains from this period.

Watersports, swimming pool & sauna

Trip adviser review;
Fab Facility, very clean and lots to do
"We easily spent a day here and for under 20 euros for a family of 4 it was fab. Unusually clean for a foreign pool! Even the toilets were spotless. You can wear board shorts and they have a picnic area you can use at lunch. Outdoor and indoor pools and has slides in both venues. The outdoor pool is heated so even if it's cold you can use it. Has a jacuzzi you can hop in too. Total bargain day and would ego go back."

Outdoor activities - climbing & zip wire

Trip adviser review;
Great Value, Great Fun with Great Staff.
I been here a couple of times now with my two children (6 & 10) and both times we've had a great experience. Compared to similar places in the UK it is excellent value. We paid €18 Adult, €12 for my 10y old and €8 for my 6y old which allows you three hours to explore the rides. There were two courses available for my 6y old and four available for my 10y old. Plenty to keep you busy for a few hours.

The staff need a mention as they were excellent both times and they all spoke English if you need them to and are polite, helpful and on hand should you need help or advice.

There were courses we didn't get to try due to my kids ages so if you have teens they'll be kept very busy.

All in all a great experience with straight forward safety procedures which were well explained by the helpful staff.

Antique Furniture

There are some fantastic depots for second hand and antique furniture, our favourites are TROC where we have bought some lovely items including a dresser for 20 euros

Golf in Carhaix

Trip adviser review;
A great little practice and learners course
Not a demanding par three course but still a good test. Great practice area with driving range, putting green and chipping area. Very knowledgable Pro and English is spoken in the shop.

Fishing - a local fishing lake

The river is at the bottom of the garden and there are lots of areas to fish locally.

Please follow the links for more information, access and pictures;

The Lac de Guerledan, Brittany's Largest Lake

The lake is a 35 min drive from our property. It is the perfect place for messing around on water, miles of hiking, trips on a boat and wonderful restaurants. The main village on the lake is Beau Rivage. Here there is a safe beach for children, pedalos or water-skiing. Another hamlet is Anse de Sordan, again you can hire pedalos, swim off the beach, and after all the exercise eat in the most wonderful restaurant overlooking the lake "The Merlin". If you prefer a little culture, how about l'Abbaye de Bon Repos. Built in 1184 it is situated in a superb setting next to the Nantes-Brest Canal, and 10 min drive from the lake. Here you will find craft shops, a restaurant and a creperie/bar where you can sit and watch people go by. Every Sunday from March to October there is a local market which sells all manner of exciting produce. In August l'Abbaye hosts "Le Son et Lumiere" a spectacular of story telling and lights. Before it starts you have time to have your own picnic on the banks of the canal, superb!

Chateaux Trevarez

This site is a must-see attraction for visitors to the heart of the Finistère department, and has been classed as a 20th Century Heritage Site. The Domaine de Trévarez was constructed at the end of the 19th century by James de Kerjégu and is sure to impress with its ‘belle époque’ castle in pink brick and Kersanton stone.
The grounds are fabulous to walk around and a cafe to enjoy a drink.

Valley of the Saints

The Valley of the Saints is unique: it’s a historic site, a land of legends, and the birthplace of incredible monumental sculptures all in one. A feudal moat, a 16th-century chapel and giant statues of Breton saints are found here in the undulating Poher landscape.

Les Forges des Salles

In the heart of the Quenecan forest you will find Les Forges des Salles. In the 18th and 19th Century this was an important village for iron and steel making. Although now privately owned, Les Forges des Salles is open to visitors and you can see the worker's cottages, the manager's house and the forges.

Tranquil wooded setting. Good spot for exploring the area.

The Games room in the basement is well equipped and the gite offers four bikes - remember your helmet :-) Take care with young children as garden on quite a steep slope with no protection against drop near canal bank. No direct access to canal path, though, so no passing walkers...

The lack of internet connection / signal was an issue at times but good for anyone wanting to detox! The addition of a dishwasher would be great but otherwise the gite is well equipped. Relaxed homely feel and the modern bathroom is lovely.

Owner response

Thank you for your feedback, it is a peaceful location, we are planning to upgrade the kitchen at the end of this season and will be adding a dishwasher.

The house is very spacious with a superb patio area and plenty of garden. The kids loved the games room and there was a really well equipped laundry and kitchen. Shower was heavenly and the beds were comfy too!

The owners were really helpful and friendly. There were lots of things they provided that made life easy whilst we were there. For example : a picnic basket, BBQ, sun loungers and 2 bikes.

Our teenage daughters loved the tree top challenges and zip wires in the nearby town of Carhaix where you can also ride horses and play "pitch and putt" golf. There is a good supermarket and 2 brilliant resturants - The Carrick and La Rotunde. Less than half an hour away you can enjoy a woodland walk, clamber across the boulders or walk round the lake in Heulgoat.

The house is a good base for travelling further afield as well. The closest beach is an hour away and if you don't mind spending a couple of hours in the car you can get to several areas of interest including; Mont St Michel, the quiet harbour town of Terenez and the beautiful medieval town of Quimper

The summer weather can be unpredictable - just like the UK - so go prepared and have a mix of indoor and outdoor plans to make the most of what this house and the area has to offer.
