About this property

La Vieille Longere is a Charming Gite in Brittany, near River and Forest. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

La Vieille Longere is situated in a truly tranquil location near the River Lie and Loudeac Forest, where the stresses of everyday life can be easily put aside.

This characterful holiday rental has been carefully renovated to create a comfortable home from home that retains many original Breton features, including exposed oak beams and A-frames.

The longere is comfortably furnished for modern life, including a relaxing living room with large sofas, tv, woodburner and dining area with frenchdoors to the barbecue terrace - an ideal spot for relaxing with a book and a drink, sketching the scenery, watching birds or star-gazing at clear night skies. The kitchen is comprehensively equipped for year-round self catering and has a wide, sunny window seat.

There are 2 spacious en suite bedrooms upstairs, and an optional third bedroom with adjacent shower room on the ground floor - this gite is particularly popular with adult friends or older families wanting to share a holiday without having to share a bathroom and offering plenty of space to relax in.

Take a stroll along country lanes to the nearby river to cool off beside the calm waters of an ancient deer crossing or follow the path down stream a little to the weir which attracts many trout fishermen. The more energetic can follow the marked cycle or rambling trails into the forest opposite or join a pony trek. Alternatively, hire canoes at the neighbouring village of La Prenessaye and explore further down river, breaking for lunch at one of the local auberges or creperies.

The area is equally appealing to anyone who enjoys meandering around small medieval towns - don't miss nearby Moncontour, which is just minutes away and is amazing; the Fete des Ramparts shared bi-annually with Dinan is a must. For those who enjoy browsing the many local markets there is plenty of fresh produce to discover - goats cheeses, honey, shellfish, pork and freshly picked vegetables are piled high beside art and craft or brocante stalls.

For exploring this area of Brittany, within an easy drive there are medieval market towns, good quality restaurants, a wide variety of historic sites, large inland lakes with watersports, fishing and boating, the beautifully scenic north coast beaches and international standard golf courses providing plenty of options for everyone.

The English owners live next door, maintain the gite personally and are available to answer any queries to help guests make the most of their stay in this beautiful and friendly area of Brittany.

Complimentary wi-fi.

Saturday change-overs are preferred during July and August, however totally flexible changeover days and short breaks are available out of peak season

About the Owner, Mrs Penny McClure

We swapped the busy pressures of running a business in England for the relaxed pace of a French rural life; it’s a world away from sitting in traffic jams and the hectic life we used to have. It took 18 months of hard work before the properties were ready to welcome our first guests for Easter 2006; since then we have enjoyed welcoming guests who want to experience a relaxing gite holiday in Brittany, it’s nice that other people feel as happy here as we do.

Year property purchased 2004
Why this location? If you are looking for a holiday cottage to rent in the real Brittany look no further!
Our gites sit in rural tranquility where it is easy to relax and forget the pressures of everyday life; the rolling countryside, nearby river and forest make it an ideal location for nature lovers, walkers, anglers, bird-watchers, cyclists and star gazers.
Sample traditional Breton fare in one of the local auberges, shop at famers markets for locally grown pork, fruit and vegetables or freshly caught seafood.
The area is an excellent choice for anyone interested in touring a fascinating, and easy to access, region of France which offers many options for sight seeing... discover the stunning landscape of menhirs and castles, forests and lakes, walled medieval cities and quaint market villages.
For a day at the coast, from just 40km away there are small rocky coves, boat filled marinas, shelving inlets where mussels are farmed and surprisingly quiet stretches of golden sand.
Unique benefits of property Each of our gîtes has been carefully renovated to retain their original Breton character whilst also providing the comforts and facilities you expect to find in modern holiday rental accommodation. They are well maintained, personally managed by us and comprehensively equipped to ensure they are good places to stay throughout the year. Out of peak season we are completely flexible about changeover days and are happy to accept bookings from 3 nights to a month. It’s so relaxing, such a treat to step out of the rat race even just for a few days.

Kayak and Cycle Hire

Visit the 'base sport nature' just down the road at La Prenessaye for an excellent value, invigorating day out. Hire kayaks from 7.50 Euros for unaccompanied half-days or join a guided trip down the river - suitable for all ages and no previous experience is necessary. Alternatively hire an all terrain bike to explore the area.

La Bisquine, Loudeac

Small but perfectly formed bistro opposite the church in the middle of Loudeac. Excellent value lunches and an extensive dinner menu using fresh seasonal produce that never fails to please.

La Mulette, Moncontour

The restaurant for mussels! A vast selection of moules options fill the menu, along with a good wine list, tasty meat of the day options for non-shellfish lovers and tables full of locals, so you know the cooking is good!

La Roche au Cerf

An ancient stone river crossing over the Lie, still said to be used by deer. A magically peaceful place to cool off with a picnic, or follow the marked riverside walk.

Lamballe Market

A must for Thursday mornings, Lamballe has a large traditional Breton market where the locals buy and sell every week; craft stalls offering hand made Celtic jewellery complete with galette stands and masses of freshly picked vegetables for your attention.

Le Chauldron Magique, Moncontour

A delightful restaurant with very helpful owners - one serves, the other cooks - who are pleased to explain the dishes contents and origins. Diners can choose to don medieval costume and cannot fail to enjoy both the atmosphere and the excellent food. A very good choice for family celebrations.

A wonderful holiday in excellent acommadation. The gite was in a beautiful setting with the owners on hand to answer questions. The gite is spacious and extremely well equipped. The range oven made eating at home easy and pleasurable. The property was extremely clean and well presented and matched our needs perfectly. I would definitely recommend the property to my adult friends.

Another excellent holiday in this beautiful gite (8th year!) everything you could possibly need. Lovely owners who are on hand if required to answer questions. Great for relaxing and so peaceful, lovely walks and bird watching. As the sun was setting Nightjars were flying about outside the gite, worth a visit to see them! Will be going again next year

La Vieille Longere is excellent and this year was our 6th visit! the gite is always lovely and clean and the owners are always happy to help with information and requirements. We have tried all the recommended restaurants and would go back to all of them again. We will be booking again for next year.
