About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Pauline Cox

After holidays in France for many years we decided to move to Brittany in 2012 with our 3 youngest children for a better work/home balance and because we loved the French slow pace of life, food and wine!

Why this location? We fell in love with Brittany and the very friendly Breton people and culture. Central Brittany is so green and peaceful and the nearby Lac de Guerledan and moorland areas remind us so much of our home county of Northumberland but with better weather. We are an easy driving distance from the beaches on the Pink Granite coast and Emerald coast, the rocky and rugged coastline and lighthouses in the west and the lovely fine sandy beaches and islands of southern Brittany.
Unique benefits of property We have an environmentally heated salt chlorinated pool which is gentle on the eyes and skin, large sheltered gardens with a well stocked play barn, swings and outdoor play equipment. All baby and children's equipment can be provided at no extra charge. Our 2 gites together can be booked by larger families or friends wishing to holiday together and can sleep up to 12 + 2 cots

We had a wonderful stay in Hibou Gite and would thoroughly recommend this as a great place for a family holiday. The property is very pretty and well equipped. There was plenty for the children to do, including swings in the garden and a well stocked play barn. The heated pool was also a highlight - very well positioned and perfect for kids as it was not too deep for the whole length - our 5 year old could stand in the whole pool. And even if the day was a bit overcast, it was still good to swim in as it’s heated. There is also another garden with trampoline and swings, and the friendly resident chickens which the children loved feeding. The honesty larder in the garden area is also great - well stocked with herbs and other cooking things, along with fresh eggs and some homemade pastries and cakes. We made good use of it!

The lake is only 10 mins away and has a nice sandy beach and some cafes, and some water sports activities. The proper beaches are a bit more of a drive but the roads weren’t busy and the scenery is lovely.

Pauline and Geof are excellent hosts - lovely greeting on arrival and willing to help with any query or question. They have lots of local knowledge and were able to recommend restaurants and places to go. They also contacted us in advance to double check if we had any special requests and were very understanding when we had to leave 1 day early.

All in all, we had a lovely holiday and hope to return. Thoroughly recommended!

We wanted somewhere to get away from the stresses of six months of Lockdown and could not have asked for more or better. The gite was lovely, well-equipped and clean with open, airy bright rooms in a delightful old stone-built Breton farm-building, very picturesque. The pool was ideal for what were some very hot days, and there was also access to badminton, table tennis and boule, which we didn't use as much as we'd intended but was great to have and a lots of fun when we did.
The owners were fantastic, attentive without being in any way intrusive, and very helpful. We had croissants and bread fresh provided every day and amazing home-baked cakes each evening, only my waistline is complaining!
The location is tucked away, but 2 mins from the motorway, so not too bad to get moving. There's a supermarket 10 mins down the road. However the location is both a strength and weakness, we loved it being so secluded and remote, but for some people an hour and more to the beaches, museums or any nightlife will seem a long way. If you want to party every night and hit the beach every day this isn't for you, if you want to chill out, take some relaxing walks by the canal and sip coffee in pretty cafes it's absolutely perfect.

We had a wonderful stay here and would highly recommend it. The hosts were amazing, and really thoughtful. There are nice little touches, like the honesty larder and the daily cakes (my son really loved them!). When we arrived we had a bottle of wine and a breton gift, which was most welcome after our long journey. We were not well for the week we were here, and our hosts were very accommodating, helping us with medication and navigating the french medical system when needed. There are some wonderful places really close by. Abbey Bon Repos is worth a trip, it is only 10 minutes away, and on a Sunday they have a wonderful market there with fresh food and a lovely spot to have some lunch or some Breton Cider.
We also made it to Lac de Guerledan. If you like walking, it is beautiful there. There are many lovely things to do, and the hosts will tell you more than this review can ever do.

Owner response

Thank you for your lovely comments and really glad that you had a good holiday even though you were not well. We hope to welcome you back again.

Beautiful property in a stunning location. Situated very close to the lake but unfortunately at the time of our stay (2015) the lake had been drained, if not I would have given 10/10 for local amenities.
The toys and outdoor space was perfect for our 2 year old, he loved exploring and discovering all the toys etc.
We had a few issues working the baby listeners but we could hear both children whilst in the Gite anyway so wasn't a problem.
The honesty lader was a lovely touch and the cakes were delicious, especially the cake made for my husbands birthday.
The kitchen is very well equipped for self catering. Very approachable, helpful hosts.
Great hliday !
