The cottage dates back to the 18th century and has now been lovingly renovated to combine quaint original features with sumptuous French furnishings. Exposed beams, stripped floorboards and open fireplaces abound, but so do all the modern conveniences you might need to create a comfortable and welcoming home-from-home. Outside there are extensive gardens to explore at your leisure, not to mention a comfortabley heated swimming pool, and all around you the many delights of historic Brittany are waiting to be discovered. Whether booked on its own or alongside the other larger property on site, Le Manoir, this is a rural retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The property sits on the edge of Le Quillio, a rural heritage village famous for its 17th century houses, flower displays and historic church. Five minutes away is the town of Mur-de-Bretagne, which is well equipped with banks, restaurants, supermarkets and shops and there are numerous other places to visit - Pontivy, Loudeauc, Dinard and Mont St Michel to name but a few. Just 40 minutes away is the ‘emerald’ coast, where you will find glorious beaches, tiny coves, rich green farmlands and quaint villages, and the ‘pink granite’ coastline is a little further by car but still well worth the trip.

The largest lake in Brittany, Lac de Guerlédan, is close by and offers an array of water sports from sailing, water skiing and pedalos to swimming, fishing and boating, and this gorgeous countryside is also the perfect setting for rambling, cycling, golfing, horse riding and visiting local markets.

La Grange is situated in an ideal location for a relaxing break or a family holiday with plenty to do for all ages and tastes. It is the ideal base for exploring this beautiful area either on the many cycleways or footpaths or by car. It is superbly situated to enjoy the beauty and culture of Central Brittany yet within easy reach of the coast.

This Charming barn conversion has ample entertainment for the whole family, there’s certainly enough to keep everyone entertained, regardless of their age. Along with the large heated swimming pool, the garden’s got a playground of its own, with a living willow wigwam, slides, swings and toddlers play equipment to keep the little ones active and occupied. Whilst in season pick fruit from trees in the orchard or snack on raspberries from the soft fruit patch. Check out the all-weather undercover play barn, with ping-pong, pool and table football – to name just a few features. This is a safe, idyllic surrounding for children to play in. Children off to bed, parents can sit back, relax, and embrace the charm of the countryside whilst enjoying a glass of fine French wine under the stars in one of the al fresco dining spaces.

Beaches

The Emerald (Côte d'Emeraude) and Pink Granite Coast (Côte de Granit Rose) in the north, is where you'll find some of the most popular beaches in Brittany. The closest to us is Les Rossairas beach near St Brieuc. It has a lovely long promenade walk and a large sandy beach. Binic is the next closest. Binic quayside is lined with restaurants and cafes specialising in fresh seafood and a selection of small shops - all with magnificent views over the pleasure boat marina. La Banche beach - the main resort beach is linked by pedestrian bridge to the marina. There is a boulevard car park and boules courts by the promenade bordering the long sandy beach with its sea water swimming and paddling pools, and childrens' club in season. Excellent access for families with children and for those with restricted mobility. Also close by are the beaches at St Quay-Portrieux and of course a little further a field the beautiful beach and coastline at Le Val Andre. Also worth a visit is Carnac, near to the world-famous megalithic sites. It has 5 beaches, recognised as some of the best in France. The main beach is La Grande Plage; other popular beaches include Plages Men Du and Beaumer on the east side.

Brittany Markets

Côtes d'Armor • Binic: Thursday mornings • Dinan: Thursday mornings, also Flea market on Wednesdays in July and August • Erquy: Saturday mornings • Lannion: Thursdays • Loudeac – Saturday morning • Moncontour: Monday morning • Mur de Bretagne: Friday evening July and August, local produce and crafts • Rostrenen: Tuesday all day through the streets of the town • Saint Gelven: Sunday morning Easter to end of October, local produce • Treguier: Wednesday mornings • Quintin -: Tuesday morning.

Carnac Stones

The Carnac stones are an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic sites around the French village of Carnac, in Brittany, consisting of alignments, dolmens, tumuli and single menhirs. The more than 3,000 prehistoric standing stones were hewn from local rock and erected by the pre-Celtic people of Brittany, and are the largest such collection in the world. Local tradition claims that the reason they stand in such perfectly straight lines is that they are a Roman legions turned to stone by Merlin or Saint Cornelius – Brittany has its own local versions of the Arthurian cycle. A Christian legend associated with the stones held that they were pagan soldiers in pursuit of Pope Cornelius when he turned them to stone. Most of the stones are within the Breton village of Carnac, but some to the east are within La Trinité-sur-Mer. The stones were erected at some stage during the Neolithic period, probably around 3300 BC, but some may date to as old as 4500 BC. In recent centuries, many of the sites have been neglected, with reports of dolmens being used as sheep shelters, chicken sheds or even ovens. Even more commonly, stones have been removed to make way for roads, or as building materials. The continuing management of the sites remains a controversial topic.

Poul Fetan

Visit this fully restored 17thC Breton village and see what life was really like 300 years ago! Milk the cows, bake bread, and see how numerous crafts were used and traditional games played everyday. Animations performed in full costume, restaurant on-site. A great day out for young and old alike.

Visit Château la Bourbansais

A zoo and park between Rennes and Saint Malo. Visit the listed château which houses the furniture and treasures of Count Lorgeril’s ancestors. Large formal gardens, game areas, picnic and barbecue areas and large green floral areas to allow visitors to observe the numerous wild species wandering about: ostriches, zebras, gibbons, macaws, wolves, deer, monkeys, etc.

Visit Dinan

A must visit destination. Why not visit on market day (Thursday). Park in the medieval town centre and visit the Fortress, wander around the cobbled streets and take the cobbled road down to the Port area where the River Rance is crossed by the viaduct. There are bars and restaurants at portside, and if you cross the river by the bridge and turn right along the river path under the viaduct, there is a pleasant 25 min walk to the petit city of character Lehon. There is an abbey, restaurant (Le Marmit: recommended) or tea served by Chris and Dennis at the Riverside B&B. In Dinan we recommend the ‘Creperie Ana’.

Visit the Largest Lake in Brittany

Lac de Guerledan: Our Manior is only 8 kms from Lac de Guerledan where you can enjoy various water sports such as water skiing and swimming, or hire a motor boat, canoe, kayak, rowing boat, dinghy or pedalo, or enjoy a lake cruise, or take dinner one evening during the summer months on a floating restaurant. There are also some great places to eat and drink onshore and three small beaches which offer safe bathing for children. (between April and autumn 2015 the lake is to be drained for planned maintenance to the dam and the hydroelectric plant. This has not taken place for 30 years and it is a huge draw as people come to see the remains of drowned villages).
