About this property

A Spacious and Beautiful Home in a Quiet Village. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

This spacious and comfortable house was once a traditional Breton farnhouse built in 1846. It is right on the edge of the village and in a very private position with large gardens to the front and rear. Fruit trees and flowers are all around and there are outside tables and chairs and relaxers for sitting out and eating al fresco. The house is our holiday home, so it's cosy and comfortable and has all the things you need for a relaxing holiday. There are 3 bedrooms and a newly fitted bathroom, a shower room and another separate wc. The farmhouse style kitchen has a big dining table, an open fire and a log burning stove as well as a gas cooker. We have central heating downstairs and heaters in all the upstairs rooms. French windows open from the sitting room onto the pretty front garden and there is plenty of seating space on 2 big settees and an armchair. We have tried to create a warm and light atmosphere and have kept some of the original French features - including the bedroom wallpaper!

The village is very pretty and well kept. It's a 2 minute walk to the excellent boulangerie which has general supplies as well as fresh bread and fabulous French pastries (closed on Wednesday). The bar tabac serves 5 course lunches every weekday with wine included. If you like walking or cycling there are some great routes around the village and there is a small village lake only 10 minutes walk from the house where you can fish (you will need to buy a permit from the bar). There are some wonderful villages and towns to visit. Dinan and Rennes - both with beautiful medieval buildings and Josselin with a fantastic castle and river and great places to eat. We're only about an hour away from the stunning north and south Brittany coastlines and there are plenty of beautiful villages and fabulous beaches to visit. We have beach chairs, windbreak and parasol if you want to use them.

Kitchen and dining

We have a large farmhouse kitchen with an open fire, log burning stove and a big kitchen table. We also have a gas cooker, microwave, toaster, electric kettle, hand-held blender, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge-freezer and plenty of cutlery and crockery.

Living rooms

The sitting room is comfortable and cosy with plenty of seating space. French windows open out onto the front garden. There are 2 big sofas and an easy chair, coffee-table and a bookcase. We have Sky tv (freeview only) and a video/dvd player with plenty of videos and dvds to watch.

Bedroom 1 has a king size bed, chest of drawers, bedside tables and hanging space. A cot is available

Bedroom 2 has twin beds, a dressing table and bedside tables

Bedroom 3 is the largest with 3 single beds, chest of drawers and more hanging space.

There is a huge landing with a great view over the back garden - my favourite place to do the ironing (if I have to!)

Downstairs there is a shower room with shower, wash hand basin and wc. Upstairs there is a modern, newly fitted bathroom with bath, over bath shower, hand basin and wc. There is also another separate upstairs wc.

There is an open fire and log burning stove in the kitchen and central heating downstairs which heats upstairs too. There are heaters in the bedrooms and a heated towel rail/radiator in the bathroom. There are no extra charges for heating. The hot water heats up overnight, so there is a full tank of hot water available every day.

We have Sky tv (freeview channels) and a video and dvd Player with plenty of videos and dvds to watch. There is a radio and cd player and plenty of books to read. We have various games, playing cards and a book of card games (in case you've forgotton the rules!)

Garden and outside

We have a good size front garden with flower beds and an area of gravel which is great for playing boules (these are provided). There's a large garden dining table, chairs and a parasol. Also a charcoal burning barbecue. This is a great space for eating out and keeping an eye on children. The back garden has a big lawned area with mature fruit trees and flowers. There is a badminton net and raquets for the more energetic. Another garden dining table and chairs are provided and 6 relaxer chairs.

Parking and garages

Beyond the house there is a large barn with parking space in front for 3 cars and plenty of turning space.

Visitor suitability

The house is perfect for adults looking for a peaceful getaway and families with children. The bedrooms are all upstairs. The house is all on one level downstairs apart from one step up to the shower room. We have a cot, travel high chair and baby gate for upstairs. Downstairs the kitchen and sitting room can be closed off to make a safe environment for toddlers. The french windows and kitchen door open onto the front garden which can also be closed off to make a safe play area outside. The back door is quite low, so anyone tall will need to remember to duck. All the other doors are normal height apart from the outhouse next to the kitchen door

Information about any additional facilities

There is a corridor downstairs for coats and shoes and a porch with log basket, clothes airer and pegs. There are washing lines in the back garden and a log store.

About the Owner, Mrs Liz Kingsnorth

Our names are Ian and Liz Kingsnorth and we live in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. We are both retired but always seem to be busy with family and friends and as volunteers for teh South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum in Doncaster.

Year property purchased 2006
Why this location? We had visited Brittany many times before we decided to buy this property. We started our search nearer the north coast, but found it quite busy and property was very expensive. We wanted somewhere in a small village where we could get to know the locals and where we could afford somewhere big enough to be able to have friends and family staying with us. Based here, we are very central and can reach either coast in about an hour.
Unique benefits of property This is our holiday home, so it is very well equipped and it's something our visitors often comment on. The house is spacious, but also very cosy. We have front and back gardens with outside eating space, so we can always sit in the sun. The village has a bar tabac and a boulangerie, so all the essentials are on hand. Lovely for walks and bike rides, but within easy reach of so many great places.

The Owner Recommends

A fantastic medieval walled town with great shops, places to eat and amazing architecture. Walk down to the port and you can take a pleasure cruise up the River Rance. Market day is Thursday

A lovely victorian coastal town with a beach and cafes, walks and plenty to see and do. It is a cultural centre with art and antique shops and some excellent shops. Market days Tuesdays and Thursdays in season.

This is a beautiful 'citie medieval' with a chateau and river walks. There is a market every Saturday and plenty of places to eat. The chateau is open and there are English speaking tours.

Jugon les Lacs

A pretty village with a lovely lake and walks. Some good places to eat in the village square. There is a watersports centre on the lake.

Lac au Duc, near Ploermel

This is our local golf course and there is a lake and a beach. You can get a 3 or 5 day pass to play golf. Nice cafe by the lake serves moules and frites

Malestroit and St Marcel

St Marcel was the location of a terrible massacre of french villagers and the Resistance Museum is in Malestroit, close by.

The capital city of Brittany, Rennes has much to offer. Many medieval houses, great shopping and great places to eat. The Museum is well worth a visit. There is a park and ride so you don't need to drive right into the city.

This is a beautiful village - very pretty with some unusual shops and good places to eat

St Cast

A lovely beach (7 beaches in fact) on the north coast of Brittany. Sailing and other watersports and safe bathing for children. Our favourite beach.

St Malo

The main port in this area, St Malo is a fantastic place to visit. The old town and ramparts were reconstructed after the war and look amazing. Great shops, places to eat, beaches and walks. You can catch the ferry from Dinard which gives you a great view of the town from the sea.

Vintage Car Museum, near Rennes

If cars are your thing, this is an amazing place to visit

This review is for 11, Rue De La Forge, Ilifaut..

The house was as described- a work in progress. Very nice, comfortable, clean and contained everything needed to have a good holiday. The owners have been very thoughtful in what they have left in the house - a real home from home. They also provided a very comprehensive instruction sheet regarding how everything in the house works and also lots of suggestions of places of interest to visit, local markets etc, which we found useful. Beautiful setting in a quiet village, lovely garden. The perfect place for a quiet relaxing holiday.

We visited Dinan, a beautiful medieval town, well worth a visit- about 40 minutes drive away and also the Sunday market at St. Meen Le Grande.
The house owners sent good instructions before the holiday and lots of information.
We would recommend this house to any one.
