About this property

A Traditional Village House in Provence.. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

This delightful 17th century village house is simply decorated and furnished with an airy and open feel. The floors in the living rooms and the stairs have been lovingly restored using tiles matching to the originals, and the beams have been exposed in the main bedroom and the dining area. Original fireplaces and other fittings and details also remain.

The kitchen and dining area are on street level, and a french window opens out onto the lower terrace overlooking the river and the forested hill on the other side. Here there are chairs and a table for outside dining, and also a barbecue for intrepid chefs.

The living room and utility, and a wc, are on the first floor and the bedrooms and bathroom (also with wc) are on the second and third floors. Also on the third (top) floor there is a second, cooler terrace under the eaves.

Because the rooms are large and run right through from front to back of the property, the light floods in from both sides creating a feeling of space and fresh air.

The cobbled street is a cul-de-sac for vehicles and therefore very quiet. At the back the soothing sound of the running water from the river adds to the relaxed atmosphere.

An ideal location from which to explore the beautiful area of Provence.

The house has lots of features, being an old building. If you appreciate character in a house, but also need modern comforts, and tranquillity, then this is the house for you. It has been lovingly modernised, by creating open airy spaces on each floor, but retaining original beams and renovating tiled floors. The street is a quiet, cobbled area, sheltered from the main road. It is a short walk (3 mins) to get fresh bread and groceries every morning. From the terraces you can look across to the wooded hillside beyond, while listening to the music of the river running below. There are plenty of walks locally.

It is easy to make day trips – for instance 1 hr to the coast, 50 mins to the Sainte Croix Lake and the start of the Verdon Gorge, 65 mins to Aix-en-Provence, and 1¾ hrs to the the Matisse Chapel at Vence.

Type

Cottage/Gite

Kitchen and dining

The kitchen is on street level. It is fully equipped with gas hob, electric oven, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee-maker etc.

The dining area is open to the kitchen, and the the lower terrace is beyond. Therefore meals can be taken either outside or at the dining table, which seats 6, or 8 at a pinch, to allow for guests. The terrace has a wooden table (with parasol) and 4 chairs, and a barbecue. We leave wicker chairs in the dining area which can easily be taken onto the terrace for relaxation while listening to the soothing sound of the river below.

Living rooms

The spacious living room on the 1st floor contains a big sofa, a large comfy chair, and other chairs to seat 8, and there is a satellite tv, dvd player, phone and wi-fi. There is a french window with a juliet balcony which overlooks the river below.

Bedrooms

The main bedroom, on the second floor, is a large and airy space, with a juliet balcony overlooking the river. The beams have been left exposed in the ceiling and the tiled floor is of a traditional type. There is a double bed, a wardrobe, a couple of chests of drawers, and a large bookshelf with a selection of books. There is also a z-bed available for a child. The bathroom is just outside the door.

The top bedroom, on the third floor, is also large and contains a double bed, a stacked single bed (which can be made into 2 single beds), a couple of chests of drawers, a comfy chair, and a cupboard. There is a door onto the private upper terrace (also overlooking the river) where there is a small wicker table and a couple of chairs.

Both bedrooms are equipped with fans and mosquito blinds on the french windows. there are also electric mosquito killers provided.

Bathrooms

The bathroom is on the second floor, just outside the main bedroom, and accessible from the stairwell. There is a second toilet in the utility room, which is on the first floor off the living room. The shower is over the bath.

Heating

There should be no need for heating from May until the end of September as, if anything, it tends to be pretty hot! However, there are electric wall radiators in the dining and kitchen areas, and also in the living room. In the winter we provide electric heaters in the 2 bedrooms.

Entertainment

There is a television in the living room, together with a dvd player. The television has a satellite dish on the roof which receives english-speaking freeview channels, but the signal is sometimes weak. You can attach your computer to the tv to watch stored films etc, but you may need to bring the connection. We use the dvd player connector, but it may not be suitable for you.

There is a large selection of dvd films, including 1 or 2 (but not many) for children. Those in french usually have an english language or subtitle option, and those in english usually have an french language or subtitle option.

In the dining area there is also a dvd player, for music.

There are several games and jigsaws on the shelf in the living room. You are welcome to borrow the boules and can play either at the far end of the car park (if space), or in the boules court on the other side of the river, towards the Salon des Fetes.

There are also books on local history, flora and fauna, wines etc.

Garden and outside

We do not have a garden. Both terraces are lovely places to sit outside and relax. On the other side of the river, going towards the cricket pitch and the Salon des Fetes, there are picnic seats and tables and locals and visitors will often go down there to eat on summer evenings.

Parking and garages

The large village car park is about 3 minutes walk, but for offloading shopping and luggage we stop on the corner at the top of the steps down into our street. There is no garage, and it is not possible to park outside our door. Some cars are able to drive up our street from the river end, but we would not advise it as it is very narrow!

Visitor suitability

Visitors who are interested in the village and local history will enjoy this type of accommodation. It is situated on a very traditional cobbled street with no modern houses nearby. Our house has 1709 over the front door. The whole village is classed as an 'ancient monument' and is very picturesque.

The house is unsuitable for guests who have mobility difficulties. There are 3 steps up to the front door, and 3 steps down again into the kitchen. The spiral staircase is quite narrow, but it has a good handrail most of the way up. However, it is not really suitable for toddlers, although children on steady legs should be fine.

Information about any additional facilities

The utility room houses the washing machine. There is a drying rack on the top terrace.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Suzanna Balfour

We are now retired and bought our home in France in 2013. We love our British home, but it gets a bit damp and cold in winter! In the summer in Cumbria we are keen bowlers (lawn bowls). When in France we play boules! We also have electric bikes which we use in both countries, and which enable us to cycle again to places we had given up on a year or two back. Also we spend time visiting family a lot in various parts of the UK.

Year property purchased 2013
Why this location? We came to Provence for 4 winters running and fell in love with the area. It’s so beautiful, with the rolling landscape, spectacular views, rock formations and rivers. The climate is mainly dry, warm and sunny on winter days and dry and hotter in the summer (we do sometimes come in the summer too). And the people here are very friendly.

We are proud to be the owners of an interesting old village house in the amazing village of Entrecasteaux. We do not come often in the summer ourselves, which gives others (maybe you!) a chance to enjoy the beauty and interest of this exceptional village, by staying in our lovely second home.

Entrecasteaux is about 1 hr 20 mins from both Marseilles and Nice airports.

The Owner Recommends

Markets

There are weekly markets at all of the local villages - Lorgues, Salernes, Carces and Entrecasteaux itself. They are colourful and varied. Arrive early to park and allow plenty of time to browse.

We had a great week here. The house is exactly as described and all the facilities work well. It was clean, and the rooms are a very good size (one main room per floor, with bathroom facilities on two floors).

There was also a great collection of books and dvds.

We loved the village - the locals were very friendly - and it is very well located for investigating the area. We enjoyed all the restaurants.

On the couple of times we had queries, the owner responded very quickly and in a friendly understanding manner.

We would happily recommend this to others.

Owner response

Thank you so much for your kind review. You clearly appreciate the kind of property and facilities we offer, and the locality the property is in. This is why we love the place ourselves! I'm so pleased the part of your holiday which was spent in Entrecasteaux was a successs.
