Activities include:
Cultural visits
For a dive into history, there is the Château of Angers with its Apocalypse tapestries, and within 35km more than 12 other châteaux open in summer.
Local interests
The 'Mine Bleu' opens its doors and takes you down into the heart of the slate mining era, and on a small train you can discover how life was. Or visit 'La Petite Couere' which has an amazing collection of livestock tools, machinery and vintage cars. 'Le Petit Train' of Angers guides you around the town or another one will take you into the vineyards south of the Loire. Trips in the summer on the rivers are a nice alternative.
Recently (within 6kms) a 'Parcabout' has opened. This is where one can walk about in the tree canopy on suspended 'footpaths'.

Sporting activities
For the golfer, there are several excellent golf courses. Walkers and cyclists can discover hundreds of kilometres of tracks and quiet roads. Local rivers offer opportunities for swimming, canoeing, windsurfing plus other watersports, and depending on the season, permits for still water and river fishing are available.
Electricity, heating and bed linen included.

Kitchen and dining

Well equipped kitchen.
Fridge-freezer, gas hob and electric oven, double sink and drainer, cafetiere, toaster, crockery, cutlery, pots and pans, small kitchen hand towel and drying up towels are provided.

The dining table seats 4 but will accommodate more - we can lend other chairs when you have guests.

Living rooms

Lounge/dining room

As the photo shows the lounge is in the main room.
There is a 2-seater sofa, two armchairs and one pouffe, plus a tv/dvd with various films. We have other dvds if you wish to come round and borrow some. The tv is in French or English.

One double and one twin.

Linen and duvets are provided, with extra blankets for when it's cold. In each bedroom there is hanging space, and shelves or drawers for your clothes.
Beside the double bed are bedside tables and a bedside lamp.
The twin room has a light switch between the beds accessible from each bed.

All rooms have shutters (except the bathroom) operational from inside, and all windows have curtains or a blind.

A shower is over the bath, with curtains around.
Don't forget the curtain must hang into the bath. Some people tried it the other way round and there was a big flood in the bathroom. We provide a bath mat which one can use in the bath if you worry about slipping.

The sink unit houses drawers and a small cupboard, and there is a big mirror.

The washing machine and toilet are behind the door.

Every room has an electric radiator which you can turn up, down or off.

There's a central unit on the wall which we ask people not to touch as we don't know how to use it and the use of the radiators can be blocked.

There is ample hot water, which is heated overnight.

Tv/dvd, English or French
Various games - scrabble and monopoly, and some jigsaw puzzles.

There's a drawer with leaflets of places people have visited, vineyards and other tourist activities in the area. The tourist office in Segré and Angers are very helpful.

Garden and outside

Private garden and patio overlooking horses field, with table, chairs and bbq. Well off the road with plenty of parking. Solar heated pool with surrounding patio and on entering the property there is a small fishing pond.

If you look on Google maps and type in Holiday Gite La Gaulerie with our address you'll come across some photos which one of our clients put up.
It'll give you an idea what we have around here although the inside furniture has changed a little.

Parking and garages

There's no garage, but if you have bikes we can find place to put them in one of the stable areas.
There is plenty of off-road parking space.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Paul & Ann Barthram

Here has been our home since 1988 and I can't think we'll ever move from this beautiful setting. Paul has now taken retirement and busies himself with his animals and DIY projects which he loves. I have a few more years to go, & so as work presents itself I find myself happily occupied.

Year property purchased 1995
Why this location? We came to this area to farm sheep and pigs in 1988, all our friends are here and so this area became home. This property became available afterwards and so we decided to stay. Some of my work was in Angers which is lovely and only 30kms away.
Unique benefits of property This property is perfect for those who wish to be at one with nature, but not far by car to towns & activities. It is very private, but with easy access to the surrounding villages. Our fish in the pond got quite a wakening up when in 2018 a fisherman came for 2 weeks - the first day he virtually spooned them into his keep net. They got wise!

The Owner Recommends

Le Pigeon Blanc / Auberge de la Diligence

The gastronomic restaurant in our village has now changed hands and has become a lunchtime only restaurant. It offers a set menu every weekday and looks to be exceptional value for money.

At the other end of the scale at Loiré (about 14km from us) is the 'Auberge de la Diligence', which is a beautiful & high quality restaurant, star rated by Michelin for 10 years. It opens from Wednesday to Sunday lunch and must be booked in advance.

La Salle à Manger

This attractive, rural restaurant is open at lunchtimes but closes for the August break. It’s a recent addition to a 'Foie Gras' company which sells their duck products. It offers a set menu or an ‘à la carte’ menu and one can choose whether to sit outside on the terrace or inside. Its reputation so far is quality and when I went the set menu was delicious & great value for money. Yum.

L'Authentique Restaurant

We've recently discovered this small and delicious restaurant in Le Lion d'Angers, and can thoroughly recommend it. Be warned, you must reserve beforehand.

One can find markets on every day of the week, but the ones I love are :
Sat am - Angers, absolutely enormous & it even has a 'brocanté' section.
Tues am - Chalonnes sur Loire,
Thurs am - Chateau Gontier, at the far end of this market you can buy chickens, ducks, rabbits etc ...
There is a new (2015) tiny farmers market in Vern on Thurs afternoon. I accidentally came across it coming home from work so I bought our evening meal !

Terra Botanica

Terra Botanica in Angers suits all members of the family. It’s a theme park based around plants, where one can ride around in nutshells, or canoe through vegetation, or whilst those botanically minded can appreciate the enormity of our botanical species without travelling too far.

excellent gite and very welcoming owners. Thoroughly enjoyable stay (our second time).

We’ve enjoyed the perfect little getaway at La Gaulerie.
Ann and Paul were perfect, there if you needed them for anything but never felt intrusive like other places we’ve stayed.
The accommodation itself is spot on. Every essential bit of mod con whilst still retaining the French countryside feel.
The location is spot on too. Far enough out to enjoy the peace and tranquility yet close enough to quickly nip to the boulangerie. The wider area was also great with plenty to find and keep 2 energetic kids entertained. Angers is beautiful.
Unfortunately the weather wasn’t 100% on our side during our stay but there was still plenty of options within 30 min drive to keep busy, if that’s what you like.
Would definitely recommend.
Thank you to you both, and Henry, Inu and Blister for a perfect, relaxing holiday.
Sorry we didn’t get to say goodbye in person, Ann.

Just back from 8 nights at La Gaulerie. Gite is well equipped and the owners, Paul and Ann are friendly and were able to strike the perfect balance of being available but not being at all intrusive. Pool is excellent and was available for our use exclusively during our stay. The location is fairly rural and therefore quiet and peaceful but only 10 mins from a supermarket and boulangerie that stocks all essentials. Location for us was ideal and we were able to squeeze many visits to interesting places into our holiday. We visited Mont St Michel, St Malo, Puy de Fou, Many Château and gardens of Loire valley - Villandry beautiful, Samaur and Laval are all within 2 hours drive and Angers with its excellent castle is a lovely city about 30 mins away. Chambord slightly further at 3 Hours but easily combined with visits to other Château in area. Self guided Vinyard tour followed by tasting at Savennières and visit to nearby island of Béhuard good too. We really enjoyed our stay here and it’s location allowed us to see everything we wanted to see in the area. Thanks Paul and Ann for the use of the Gite.

La Gaulerie continues to be a lovely cottage to stay in. Paul and Ann are great hosts, always available for help and advice. the main house is only 30 metres away. It is really a marvellous place to chill out and enjoy the super setting. Their 9 metre pool is very well maintained and is of course for the guests exclusive use. The cottage is a converted barn with great thick exterior walls so, even in very hot weather it stays cool.

For those wishing for an escape from the stresses and turmoil of everyday life La Gaulerie is a must!
