For a dive into history, there is the Château of Angers with its Apocalypse tapestries, and within 35km more than 12 other châteaux open in summer.
The 'Mine Bleu' opens its doors and takes you down into the heart of the slate mining era, and on a small train you can discover how life was. Or visit 'La Petite Couere' which has an amazing collection of livestock tools, machinery and vintage cars. 'Le Petit Train' of Angers guides you around the town or another one will take you into the vineyards south of the Loire. Trips in the summer on the rivers are a nice alternative.
Recently (within 6kms) a 'Parcabout' has opened. This is where one can walk about in the tree canopy on suspended 'footpaths'.
For the golfer, there are several excellent golf courses. Walkers and cyclists can discover hundreds of kilometres of tracks and quiet roads. Local rivers offer opportunities for swimming, canoeing, windsurfing plus other watersports, and depending on the season, permits for still water and river fishing are available.
Electricity, heating and bed linen included.
This attractive, rural restaurant is open at lunchtime. It’s a recent addition to a 'Foie Gras' company which sells their duck products. It offers a set menu or an ‘à la carte’ menu and one can choose whether to sit outside on the terrace or inside. Its reputation so far is quality and when I went the set menu was delicious & great value for money. Yum.
We've recently discovered this small and delicious restaurant in Le Lion d'Angers, and can thoroughly recommend it. Be warned, you must reserve beforehand.
One can find markets on every day of the week, but the ones I love are : Sat am - Angers, absolutely enormous & it even has a 'brocanté' section Tues am - Chalonnes sur Loire, Thurs am - Chateau Gontier, at the far end of this market you can buy chickens, ducks, rabbits etc ... There is a new (2015) tiny farmers market in Vern on Thurs afternoon. I accidentally came across it coming home from work so I bought our evening meal !
Terra Botanica in Angers suits all members of the family. It’s a theme park based around plants, where one can ride around in nutshells, or canoe through vegetation, or whilst those botanically minded can appreciate the enormity of our botanical species without travelling too far.
A super tranquil setting. The cottage with a small grass and shrub garden is on its own but close to the owner's home. The whole is surrounded by fields and beautiful French countryside. There is an excellent 9 meter swimming pool. The cottage has two bedrooms and a god sized living/dining room. The kitchen is very small with sink, gas oven and hob together with a good sized fridge/freezer. There is plenty of cupboard space. The bathroom is modern and we'll appointed. There is a satisfactory washing machine, with line drying facilities outside. There is a small patio area, with chairs, table and parasol. A few yards away is a permanent BBQ set up.
Pal an Ann Barthram are marvelous hosts. They have that rare talent of making all their guests feel that their relationship with them is special.
Thanks Nigel & Liz for your lovely commentsi. It came as a surprise that you were contacted but maybe now it's automatique.- do i repeat myself? There was a small plastic bag with important looking things in which I'll post nack to you
Ideal location if peace and quiet required...ideal for us but driving of several miles needed for usual facilities like supermarkets/restaurants.excellent pool area.Owners live in adjoining house and we're so nice and helpful.Very competitive rental as private pool included.Would definitely recommend it.
What a gem! We have had a lovely time at La Gaulerie - utter peace and tranquility. The owners were so kind and welcoming, yet so mindful of our privacy. Having horses and friendly dogs on the doorstep, 'our' own pool, patio and little garden was so lovely for us townies - as were the reliable Wifi and TV (the Olympics were on!!!) Plenty to do in the surrounding areas (kids loved the Parcabout) but we had great weather so mainly enjoyed lazy days around the pool with a few trips here and there. Merci beaucoup!
An oasis of tranquility. What can you hear? The twittering and fluttering of the swallows. The gentle hum of the wind turbine. The ripple of the pond pump. The occasional tractor. The incredible farting horse (amusement for children of all ages!). Nothing else. Perfect. A walk along the path close to the cottage, and with every step, a myriad of butterflies launch into the air, then settle as you stop to look. Amazing.
The Cottage: almost everything you want or need. Comfy bed (my wife has a bad back, but although the bed was soft, it was supportive enough for her to sleep (and snore!) well. Basic Sky TV for those who can't be away from Blighty (not me!). DVD's. WiFi for the connected generation. Lovely pool, more than warm enough after the initial intake of breath. Enough outside chairs, and places to sit. Jigsaws (can you believe my wife went on holiday, and did a Jigsaw?!?) Games. Books. The Cottage was clean and airy.
Paul and Ann were helpful and unobtrusive hosts - many thanks to them.
Negative things: I suppose the main negative for some people was the relative isolation, but that is just what we want. In any case, a 5 minute drive and you're in a small town with its local shops and convenience store. Take that as you will. I'm used to a dishwasher at home, so I missed that, but I knew there wasn't one in the cottage, so I can't knock it for that. We had a lovely, relaxing 10 days.
My overriding impression; Lovely, tranquil cottage, with everything we need.
