About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Ken and Marian Woodhouse

We have owned The Besse House since the early 90's.. We love the area where we live and visit as often as we are able. We are retired... very... and enjoy travelling.

Year property purchased 1991
Why this location? Accessibility from Channel ports, the lovely area, the peace and quiet, the people and perhaps a taste for the Loire wines.
Unique benefits of property Relaxation, comfort, privacy without isolation. Great for young children because of the security of the garden.

The Owner Recommends

Numerous lovely gardens at Villandry; Guy de Maupassant, Allones. Le Prieure de Cosmes in Tours. The Japanese gardens at Maulevrier. Les Chemins de la Rose in Doue la Fontaine can be part of a day shared with a visit to Doue Zoo, one of the best of the ecologically-minded collections around

Good Restaurants

Au Val de Loire and La Toque Blanche in Rosiers. Les Naulets d'Anjou in Gennes. The bar/restaurant Le Cabernet d'Anjou in Le Thoureil. All good. For a meal with a difference try Les Cathedrales de la Saulaie in Doue la Fontaine - great!

Local Markets and Supermarkets

Markets at Doue la Fontaine on Mondays, Gennes Tuesdays, Brissac Thursday and Saumur on Saturday. There are supermarkets in Gennes and Hypermarkets in Angers and Saumur

A visit to the military cavalry school at St-Hilaire-St-Florent to see the displays at le Cadre Noir is recommended

Saumur Wines

In Saumur you should not miss the various cellars of Langlois Chateau, Gratien Meyer and Bouvet Ladaubay to learn about the production of sparkling wines - and the tastings.... As well as the famous chateaux names there are the less well publicised such as Brissac, Boumois, Montgeoffrey, Le Plessis Bourre and Le Plessis Mace. Often these are also private residences and visits paid are warm and welcoming

Troglodyte Villages

Not far from home are troglodyte villages which can be visited. These were inhabited until less than 90 years ago. If the world before lifes luxuries became commonplace is of interest, then this is a place to visit

repeat visit - perfect for a relaxed stay right beside the Loire. loads of things to do locally and in the home. thoroughly recommend.

9.7 / 10 ChillOut2 19 July, 2016

The House at Besse offered a comfortable and well-maintained property, with many modern facilities including a wide screen (English) TV and dishwasher. There is a gas hob and an eye level oven. The refrigerator was starting to show its age but worked sufficiently well. There is no wi-fi. The two showers are modern and clean. The are two WCs. Each bedroom has a double bed and one room has an additional single divan.

The owner has left instructions for most devices and facilities and telephoned us soon after we arrived to check that everything was OK. The property probably dates from the 1980s and the decor, all well maintained, reflects this. The beds are comfortable as is the lounge. Access to the house is only by steep steps, front, and rear, so those with mobility issues would find this property difficult to use.

There is a view down to the Loire from the lounge/front balcony.

There is an excellent fleet of bicycles, all relatively modern and well maintained. The owner has left bike locks, pumps etc and there are some good cycle routes (not all flat) in the viciity. The road along the Loire is a popular and recognised cycle route.

The garden is large and extends to the front and rear of the house and coupled with the purpose built barbeque makes a relaxing place to spend time. The owners announced that they would arrive to mow the lawn during or stay.

This is a moderately quiet part of France but there is some activity on the Loire.

Two grand parents, two daughters, two sons-in-law and two grandchildren aged 2 and 9 had a wonderful time at the Besse house. Peaceful location yet within easy reach of local town, cafes and restaurants. Large garden for the children to play in, table tennis in the basement, bikes provided if you feel like a bit of exercise, plenty of garden furniture to relax on and we were blessed with plenty of sunshine - what more could one wish for ! The house was clean and comfortable and the owner kept in touch to make sure all was well. Highly recommended.
