Le Chant d'Oiseau is a collection of 3 beautifully renovated gîtes, Héron is one of these gîtes and is set in stunning countryside in the sleepy northern reaches of the Loire Valley, close to Saumur. We cater specifically for families, and wheelchair disabled travellers.
Out of season short breaks are welcomed and two out of the three gîtes (Héron and Chardonneret) are open all year round.
Le Chant d'Oiseau is pretty unique in that we operate a very small campsite here too, with just 10 pitches, and arranged around the outside of our 2 acre gardens. The dynamic created by having both gîtes and camping guests makes for a wonderful 'community' atmosphere, which we encourage with twice-weekly table d'hôtes. There are also pizza evenings and fouée (a local delicacy not to be missed while in the area) afternoons cooked in our own bread oven! And, since late 2017, you can relax in our on-site bar area in the covered barn with a glass of something local, or a cool, refreshing beer!
We have so much more to do in the local area as well as on-site. We're right in the middle of château country here, with many that are easily reachable inside an hour by car. There are also many vineyards just a short drive away, many that offer wine trails on foot or by bike. We have museums a-plenty offering visits with subjects as diverse as sculpture (Musée Jules Debois at Parçay les Pins) to tanks (Musée des Blindés at Saumur). For the actively inclined, there are a thousand and one things to occupy you - canoe/kayaking, horse riding, fishing, walking, wild swimming, sailing, wind sailing, cycling: it's all here.
On-site activities include a pool table, badminton, a large wooden children's play area with tree-house for the older kids, as well as swings, slide and a small cabane for the younger ones. There's also boules, babyfoot, ping-pong and lots, lots more! There's free wi-fi connection if you need it, and plenty of books and dvds in our library.
New for the 2019 season will be our new swimming pool. We're taking some time this winter to retire our old, trusty (but tired) splash pool, and install a new, much larger, semi-buried and heated swimming pool for guest's enjoyment! It'll be fully fenced for your peace of mind, enclosed in a lovely lawned area with sunloungers and sail shades too!
Many of our guests tell us that they usually make a point of not visiting a holiday destination twice, but they make an exception for us!
We work extremely hard at what we do to provide all of our guests with a relaxing and friendly environment, because we know how much your holiday means to you.
Héron has a large, light and airy fully-fitted modern kitchen, including washing machine and dishwasher. The views from the window are over open countryside to the rear of Le Chant d'Oiseau. Often, there will be deer close by, and the bird life is impressive.
Héron has a large screen tv, with UK Free to air channels as well as a dvd player. There's soft lighting, feature stone walls, beams and a certain 'je ne sais quoi'! The sofas are large and comfy for lounging on while watching tv or reading a book from our bookshelves.
It's worth noting that Héron is wheelchair disabled friendly too.
Héron can sleep 5 in 2 large bedrooms. Mum and dad have a very large double bedroom with huge wardrobe, bedside cabinets, and the children share another large bedroom with both a single and a bunk bed. There's plenty of hanging space in the large double wardrobe, as well as storage in the bedside cabinets. Lots of room to spread out for toys and games too!
Héron enjoys a large bathroom with 'drive under' basin (for wheelchair disabled), and a lovely, wide, deep bath (candles provided for your relaxation), but there's also a shower over for those that prefer it.
For chillier evenings, there are electric wall heaters in both bedrooms and the lounge area. There's also a bathroom towel heater as well as a wood burning stove for low season use.
Héron has a very large (50") LCD tv, which has Free to air channels (BBC, ITV, CH4 etc.). There's a lovely old French 'buffet' with cupboards containing games for all, either for those less sunny days, or for when it's just too warm, and you'd rather relax indoors! There's also a good selection of books to relax with, and a great collection of dvds.
Héron has a lovely, shady patio area to the front alongside a fenced garden/lawned area to relax in. To the side of the gîte is a second patio area that is very sunny in the morning - perfect for that first coffee of the day, and maybe a croissant or two?
There's a stone bbq as well as benches, chairs and sunloungers for your use.
Parking is simple. It's off road, secure, and right in front of the gîte.
Héron is a large and roomy gîte, suitable for all. Especially for families and those with a disabled relative.
Set in beautiful gardens that also double as a small campsite. Don't let this put you off as the atmosphere generated is simply superb. Many people re-book year on year to meet up with friends they've made here. There's a chance to holiday with family members who might prefer to camp, or enjoy a little bit of comfort in one of the other gîtes.
We're also gaining a solid reputation as a small, boutique wedding venue too!
If you're planning a special celebration, whether that's a wedding or simply a get-together for a birthday, why not get in touch to discuss what we can offer you?
Syb & I left the UK for our new home in France after falling in love with the blue shutters, the tranquil peace and the 'happy' tuffeau stone of the region. We brought over our 3 children aged 13, 16 & 19 at the time - plus Syb's disabled pensioner mum, Sheila.

|Why this location?||Because it's quiet and peaceful, and many of our guests search for somewhere that allows them to de-stress, far from the madding crowd. We wanted a place that we could transform into our own piece of French heaven, and offer it out to guests seeking the same. We're still here 14 years later, so we hope we're doing something right!
Although we're rurally located, we're only a short car ride into Saumur for the fantastic weekly market, plus all the facilities a large market town has to offer. Riverside bars and restaurants, shops, wine tasting, museums and theatre. Saumur in the summer is a bustling place with plenty of attractions such as La Loire a Vélo, the Bastille Day celebrations, HUGE vide greniers, antiques markets, the popular Vélo Vintage festival and the Grande Tablée!
Angers, Tour and Le Mans are only an hour away by car - all offering the visitor a multitude of things to see and do.
|Unique benefits of property||Peace and quiet in a unique multi-generational setting. Combining camping and gites offers the chance for families to spend time together on the same site, and as we're only small, it offers the chance to meet new friends!
We hold very popular meal nights and pizza evenings, giving parents and couples the chance to relax without the added chore of washing up - or driving on unfamiliar roads at night. For the 2018 season, we've added a bar selling beers, wines, ciders and soft drinks too - so there's even more reason to stay in!
We're popular with families with children of all ages too. Parents of younger children can relax, knowing that their child is safe on such a small, friendly site - making friends here is so easy to do! New for the 2019 season is our large heated, covered swimming pool and boules pitch! The pool's already proven a hit with early visitors and guests are loving the competition sized boules pitch! Perfect for unwinding with a glass of wine as the sun sets!
The Tank Museum. A great day out for all the family!
