Margaret and I are from the north of England and we have an apartment there. We retired in 2005 and had intended having Saumur as our summer base. We live in southern Spain for the first months of each year.

Margaret is a great cook and so we visit local markets to buy fresh produce, Good quality fish and poultry is easy to buy here.

If we fancy a change we also have some superb Michelin recommended restaurants nearby. We both enjoy wines and enjoy the great value and quality
|Year property purchased||2005|
|Why this location?||We first visited Saumur in 1990 and were impressed by the river and chateau setting. We also visited the Dordogne on several occasions and realised there was not enough going on to live there permanently.

So when preparing for early retirement our thoughts returned to Saumur. We stayed in a Gite nearby and the couple there helped us find the land and builders to construct our dream home.

Having lived here during the summers for 11 years we never regret this decision. We have very friendly neighbours and there is always something going on.|
|Unique benefits of property||We have rented several Gites before living here and the problems of converted outbuildings soon became evident. Typically they have low beams in the first floor bedroom and bathrooms on the ground floor = frequent headaches.

Solid walls, with small windows tend to make them dark and without central heating they can be quite cold in Spring and Autumn.

Quite often we would rent a cottage for two, but there would be a bigger property occupied by a noisy family nearby with would ruin our enjoyment.

Building a purpose designed holiday home to overcome these shortcomings while also finding a vineyard location near to a village with south facing panoramic views helped to create an idyllic holiday.

About 70% of our guests are returners and so we are pretty certain we have a successful formula.|
