Ours is a small, friendly, rural community with under 300 inhabitants in the village and surrounding hamlets. The village of Armaillé dates back to before 11th century and many of the buildings you see here today, including ours, were built in 15th and 16th centuries. Situated on the beautiful River Verzee we have a bridge, lavoir (public laundry), water mill, convent and church. Our own house and outbuilding are listed as ‘edifices interessants’ (interesting buildings).

Kitchen and dining

Breakfast is included and is served in your private first floor dining/sitting room, at a time to suit you. With a view of the village, during the summer months, you can watch the swallows and house martins swoop past the window to and from their nests nearby.

Table d'hote lunch and evening meals are available on request and are served in our dining room or in the garden when the weather is fine. We are licensed to sell beer and wine with a meal.

We are happy to cater for all dietary requirements. We use local, organic produce as much as possible. We regularly eat vegetarian and vegan meals ourselves.

There are also tea and coffee making facilities in your accommodation.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Cath O'Hagan

We are Pete and Cath O’Hagan and we moved to France from the UK in December 2016. For years we’d talked about a complete change of lifestyle. A fresh start somewhere new. We wanted to spend more of our time doing the things we enjoyed and that were important to us. For us that meant more opportunities for creativity, to live naturally and sustainably and to be somewhere that inspired us. And we wanted to eat and drink well and share our home and lifestyle with people who would enjoy it!

Why this location? The picturesque village of Armaillé is the jewel of this area with its beautiful river, lake, bridge, lavoir (old public laundry), mill, church and other historic buildings. It also has a lovely, friendly bar open 7 days a week. It's the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the experience of French village life.

So we've opened our little B&B here and we are producing more and more of our own food: we grow vegetables, fruit and herbs, we keep chickens and ducks for eggs and we are experimenting with Aquaponics. We also forage: the wild mushrooms we have collected locally are the best we have ever had!
Unique benefits of property In addition to longer stays, we offer a fully flexible 1-2 night stopover package for travellers driving further through France or onto Spain and Portugal. Located a comfortable driving distance from several of the French ports serviced by Brittany Ferries, and a short detour from the main route between Rennes and Nantes, we aim to make the start or end of your trip as enjoyable and stress free as possible with check in and check out times to suit you, flexible meal times (breakfast is included, 'Table d'hote' lunch and dinner are available on request), comfortable spacious accommodation (bedroom, ensuite and private salon (living/dining room), high speed wi-fi and English tv.

The Owner Recommends

On the doorstep

Fishing: The river and lake in the village are popular and there are many more fishing spots nearby.

Cycling: You are welcome to borrow our bikes to explore and there are many well-marked cycle routes in the region. The Voie Verte follows disused railways cross country and there are lovely cycle tracks along the Loire and Mayenne rivers.

Walking: You can even join a section of the pilgrims way which passes by a couple of kilometres away.

Painting and Photography: There’s plenty of beauty to capture in the architecture, wildlife and nature of the area.

A Short Drive Away

Antique and Curio Shopping – There are numerous brocantes and markets for you to browse and vides greniers (empty attic sales) take place in villages and towns across France from March to October. Our favourite for second hand shopping is Trocantons at Saint Mars la Jaille, about 30 minutes away.

Concerts, Exhibitions, Events, Festivals, Fetes and Fairs – We keep an eye on what’s taking place in the area and are happy to suggest things to see and do.

Water Activities: There are a choice of swimming lakes, with and without water sports and activities, and indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools too. Canoes, kayaks and pedalos can be rented on the lakes and rivers.

Horse riding/equestrian events – There are several equestrian centres around where you can arrange to go horse riding and regular horse racing at Senonnes and Lion d’Anger.

About An Hour Away

Chateaus, Parks, Museums and Galleries: We are around an hour from the beautiful cities of Angers, Nantes and Rennes with their chateaus, parks, museums, galleries and more.

Vineyards and Wine Tasting – We are just north of the Loire Valley with its famous vineyards which are well worth a visit. If you’d prefer not to drive yourself we can take you and you can enjoy sampling the wine without the worry of driving afterwards!

Beaches – The coasts of Southern Brittany and Loire Atlantique are easily accessible for a day at the sea.
