I am a retired trade union official and I live here in France with my wife Kate and our 2 cats and 3 hens. I am a keen birdwatcher and we have plenty of birds to see around our property. Kate is a keen gardener and is in charge of our gardens where we grow vegetables and flowers. We are also developing a nature trail around our 5.5 acre grounds to encourage birds and other wildlife. We are happy to share our knowledge with guests.

|Why this location?||This is a beautiful part of rural France. Quite like SW England where we are from. It is full of fields and trees. We are also close to the channel ports, so it is easy to get here. We have French and English neighbours. It has peace and quiet of a large rural and farming area but we are near enough to towns for shopping and entertainment. The weather is also good with lovely spring and summer sunshine, but not too hot.|
|Unique benefits of property||The peace and quiet of rural France combined with a lovely comfortable gite. There are large grounds to play in and explore with lots of wildlife. Cattle and sheep, birds, bats and butterflies, foxes, deer and the occasional hare all in our grounds and the fields around us. If the weather is not so good we have a games room with a pool table and darts board as well as lots of indoor entertainment in the gite - films, books, board games and some toys. We live on site and if you want we can provide lots of local information about the garden, the wildlife and things to do in the area. If you just want to chill in the garden, with a glass of wine and a book then we have plenty of space for shade or sun.|
At Laval (45 minutes away) there is the Museum of Naive Art including works by Henri Rousseau (known as Le Douanier). At Pontmain (20 mins) there is a Centre for Contemporary Art which has regular exhibitions of modern art.
Largest medieval fortress in Europe at Fougeres is superb. There are many smaller castles and châteaux in the area. At Lassay les Chateaux there are three and the beautiful village of Sainte Suzanne there is an impressive castle and museum.
Authentic French street markets on Wednesday mornings at St. Hilaire du Harcuet (30 minutes away) and on Saturday mornings in Fougeres (40 minutes). Local cheese, wine, meat, fruit and veg, even live chickens as well as crafts and other items. Well worth a visit
Les Jardins des Renaudies only 20 minutes away with 3000 varieties of plants. At Fougeres (40 mins) there is the Botanic Garden of Brittany laid out around an old Chateau. Lassay les Chateaux has its own Town Rose Garden. The floral village of St. Fraimbault is worth a visit. The village houses and public buildings/areas all have flower displays.
La Marjolane, on the outskirts of Mayenne by the river. Excellent French cooking in lovely surroundings with a reasonably priced menu du jour at lunch times. Ideal for a long lunch and a stroll along the river. They are excellent with children. The Briccius at the village of Brece is quite close to us and serves a brilliant menu du jour with three courses, cider/wine and coffee all for 12 Euros, good food and good value for money (you can walk off lunch with a waymarked walk along the banks of the river Colmont).
Jublains is a Roman village with museum, amphitheatre, temple and Roman fortress. Only 30 minutes away and well worth a visit.
Very well equipped Gite, very well situated, very quiet roads for cycling and driving, we saw owls and hares and deer on the property. The only negative is for men of a certain age who need to get up in the night as the toilet is on a lower floor to the bedroom and the stairs are very steep! However there is a bed settee on the same floor as the bathroom which we would have used had we known! Would we stay here again? Very definitely. Excellent value for money.

A really lovely gite in a fantastic location. The gite was clean, comfortable and well-equipped - matching the description perfectly. The communication and information prior to arrival was excellent, on reaching La Godefrere we received a warm welcome and further information about the gite and area. The gite is surrounded by a gorgeous garden, which we made use of daily. We thoroughly enjoyed cycling the quiet roads in the area as well as the old railway line and towpaths along the La Mayenne river. The gite has a games room downstairs which was perfect for storing our bikes. The pretty towns of Mayenne, Domfront and Laval are all worth a visit. We would definitely recommend La Godefrere to our friends and family.
Beautiful, tranquil location. The perfect spot to rest and relax. The gite is lovely and comfortable. The owners who live in the building opposite are readily on hand to help with anything you might need. You have to travel a little bit to find shops, bars, restaurants etc but this has to be balanced against the peaceful rural idyll that you can enjoy away from the rat race. Our stay was pretty much perfect.
It's all good! Peace and quiet. Helpful owners.....and cats!
Very few. Teenagers might find nightlife lacking.
