About this property

Comfortable Gite from which to Explore Rural France. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Nestled on the borders of Normandy and the Pays de la Loire, this converted 100 year old farm building has been renovated to a high standard and offers excellent accommodation for between 2-6 guests.
Set in a pretty courtyard at the end of a quiet lane (ideal as a central base for touring) you will find the peace and relaxation you deserve as you enjoy the panoramic views over the beautiful surrounding countryside. You can also enjoy the varied wildlife around the grounds, our developing gardens and nature trail.
The gite is accessed via an internal staircase and has a large open plan living area. There is a fully equipped modern kitchen. There are 2 well decorated and airy loft bedrooms, one double and one twin. The 2 bedrooms are accessed from separate flights of stairs on either side of the gite. Also for extra beds one of the sofas converts to a double bed. The bright and cheerful bathroom has a shower, wc and washbasin. There is a tv with access to English and French programmes plus dvd player, (and a collection of dvds) cd and Ipod players as well as free wi-fi connection. We also have books and board games.

If you enjoy wildlife we have plenty to offer. We have resident little owls who nest in the roof of the gite and bats galore and in the summer loads of butterflies. In the daytime we are flown over by kestrels and buzzards We now have a nature trail around the grounds. If you just want to chill out there are lounging chairs, a bbq and outdoor dining on the patio.
The Mayenne region is an easy drive from the ferry ports. If you would prefer to fly, Ryanair operate from East Midlands and Stansted to Dinard and Flybe operate from Exeter, Southampton and Southend to Rennes during the summer. Car hire is available at both airports. It is around 4.5 hours from the Channel Tunnel, via autoroutes (motorway).
As you will discover, there is plenty to see and do in the local area. The small market towns of Gorron and Ambrieres les Vallees are close by and you will find all your provisions in the supermarkets there as well as local bakers and butchers. If you like to eat out there are a range of excellent restaurants with fixed price menus.
St Fraimbault is just around the corner and is known as the village of flowers. If you visit in the summer, you will soon understand why! The medieval town of Domfront is close by as is the beautiful spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne with its "Belle Epoque" houses. The Department city, Mayenne is less than 20 minutes away and has an impressive chateau and museum as well as a number of local shops.
Lassay les Chateaux is just a short drive and boasts a lovely old castle, a town rose garden and a delightful town centre with nice cafes and local walks.
An hour and half away is the coast and Mont St Michel with its wonderful monastery and well worthy of a day out. The Normandy beaches are also only two hours from here. The medieval City of Le Mans is less than 2 hours away with a well preserved medieval town centre as well as the motor racing track and its museum.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Graham Parish

I am a retired trade union official and I live here in France with my wife Kate and our 2 cats and 3 hens. I am a keen birdwatcher and we have plenty of birds to see around our property. Kate is a keen gardener and is in charge of our gardens where we grow vegetables and flowers. We are also developing a nature trail around our 5.5 acre grounds to encourage birds and other wildlife. We are happy to share our knowledge with guests.

Why this location? This is a beautiful part of rural France. Quite like SW England where we are from. It is full of fields and trees. We are also close to the channel ports, so it is easy to get here. We have French and English neighbours. It has peace and quiet of a large rural and farming area but we are near enough to towns for shopping and entertainment. The weather is also good with lovely spring and summer sunshine, but not too hot.
Unique benefits of property The peace and quiet of rural France combined with a lovely comfortable gite. There are large grounds to play in and explore with lots of wildlife. Cattle and sheep, birds, bats and butterflies, foxes, deer and the occasional hare all in our grounds and the fields around us. If the weather is not so good we have a games room with a pool table and darts board as well as lots of indoor entertainment in the gite - films, books, board games and some toys. We live on site and if you want we can provide lots of local information about the garden, the wildlife and things to do in the area. If you just want to chill in the garden, with a glass of wine and a book then we have plenty of space for shade or sun.

Very well equipped Gite, very well situated, very quiet roads for cycling and driving, we saw owls and hares and deer on the property. The only negative is for men of a certain age who need to get up in the night as the toilet is on a lower floor to the bedroom and the stairs are very steep! However there is a bed settee on the same floor as the bathroom which we would have used had we known! Would we stay here again? Very definitely. Excellent value for money.

A really lovely gite in a fantastic location. The gite was clean, comfortable and well-equipped - matching the description perfectly. The communication and information prior to arrival was excellent, on reaching La Godefrere we received a warm welcome and further information about the gite and area. The gite is surrounded by a gorgeous garden, which we made use of daily. We thoroughly enjoyed cycling the quiet roads in the area as well as the old railway line and towpaths along the La Mayenne river. The gite has a games room downstairs which was perfect for storing our bikes. The pretty towns of Mayenne, Domfront and Laval are all worth a visit. We would definitely recommend La Godefrere to our friends and family.

Beautiful, tranquil location. The perfect spot to rest and relax. The gite is lovely and comfortable. The owners who live in the building opposite are readily on hand to help with anything you might need. You have to travel a little bit to find shops, bars, restaurants etc but this has to be balanced against the peaceful rural idyll that you can enjoy away from the rat race. Our stay was pretty much perfect.
