John and Ange live here with our grand-daughter Selina. We love the laid-back life-style, the space, quiet roads, warmer weather than the UK. Need we go on??
|Year property purchased||2010|
|Why this location?||We love this part of France, and fell in love with the orchard and the potential of the buildings.|
|Unique benefits of property||The holiday cottage is suitable for disabled guests, with a double bedroom and large wet-room both on the ground floor.
It is equally lovely for children, with a secure heated pool, jacuzzi, (both May to Oct) indoor games room, outdoor play area, chickens and of course goats waiting for a walk and a cuddle!
We are only 200 yards from the heart of the village, but in a quiet, countryside spot.
A sandy man-made beach is ideal for a swim, or lead your children on a Shetland pony round the woods. A land train takes you round the medieval town and the Chateau is a picturesque place to stop for a pastis or hot chocolate. There is also a lovely Aqua centre with flumes, fountains and wave machine. Fougeres has a great market on Saturday mornings and a 10pin bowling alley, and is also home to our favourite "eat as much as you like" Chinese restaurant!
Gorron is our closest town, it has an indoor/outdoor pool, supermarket and a variety of small shops and restaurants and bars. It also has one of our favourite parks. A river winds through it and you can canoe there, or try your hand at tree-top walking. For smaller children there is a 'basket-chair swing' and walk up the hill to low-level rope-walks among the trees. There is also a barbecue, so you can bring your own charcoal and food, and enjoy a meal there.
Pontmain is one of France's major pilgrimage sites. It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared to local children. There is now a Basilica on the site, and slideshow in the barn (2 euros in the slot!) where the children were when she appeared. It is well worth a visit and the original church is very picturesque. There is also a gallery showing works from local artists.
Rennes is a busy town around an hour's drive away. It has a bustling Saturday market selling everything from live oysters and lobsters, farmer's own creme fraiche, vegetables, sausages and cheese, to clothes, jewellery, and (my own favourite) a street of fresh flower and plant stalls. The Market is based in 'Place des Lices' in the medieval area of Rennes and which is well worth seeing for its old buildings and cobbled streets.
On a Wednesday, this is a busy market selling everything including livestock. Buy a sausage in a baguette or a crepe (pancake) with chocolate filling, find a seat at a bar, and watch the world go by.
Our area is famous for the Christmas Illuminated Villages. Villages compete to show off their fairytale themes and some offer mulled wine and crepes (pancakes). A tour round the villages is definitely a 'must' on your Xmas break.
Had everything we needed. Owners really helpful and friendly.
Suitable for families with all aged children.
Great to have animals on site too, the children loved this.
Thanks for the lovely comments. We loved having you, and everyone really enjoyed Paddle boarding and Acrobranche! Hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in France. Come back again!
The gite has everything you need and is in a quiet little countryside village. John, Angela and Selina are a lovely family who went out of their way to make us feel welcome (especially the kids). They have goats you can walk and feed bottles of milk to and plenty of chickens producing eggs for breakfast every day. If you are travelling with children they have loads of equipment for them to play on, including trampoline and swimming pool and also wifi and digital TV once they've tired themselves out!
There is a very small village shop/bar/cafe for essentials and there are many bakerys and supermarkets in the nearby towns Ernee and Gorron (we had some nice crepes in Gorron as well).
It's the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. If you want to explore the surrounding area there are many lovely markets, forests, castles, parks and gardens all within about 30mins-1hr drive.
We had an amazing holiday here and hope to return one day soon.
Thanks for the lovely review. It was a pleasure having you to stay and the children were adorable! When you come back (!) the hot tub will be installed, and a large paddling pool for kids and adults as well as the heated pool.
This is a lovely gite in a great location with plenty to do or simply space to relax. The owners are very helpful and keen to make sure everything is right for your stay and the facilities are excellent. Our children particularly enjoyed walking and feeding the goats and hunting for chicken eggs in the morning! The pool is a pleasant addition to the property and is deep enough to swim in or just to float in if the weather is good.
There is only one shop in the immediate village which is quite limited but there are several decent supermarkets within 15 mins drive away and there are plenty of things to see and do within a relatively short drive, including several Chateaux, horse riding, and even a day out at the beach within approx 1hrs driving!!
Overall this is an excellent property for a very pleasant stay.
Thanks for the wonderful comments! We enjoyed having you, and the goats loved all the attention! It was great that a couple of eggs hatched while you were here to see the new chicks. Come again!
Excellent gite with excellent hosts. Unfortunately it was in a rather remote location and most of the local restaurants were closed. I would definitely visit again but maybe at a different time of year.
Thank you for your lovely comments about us and the gite. We are in a small village in the countryside, but we are only 10 minutes by car to two towns with swimming pools, acrobranche, fishing, restaurants and cinemas.
It is especially lovely here in spring (baby lambs and calves, violets and primroses), and autumn, (chestnuts, mushrooms, blackberries, hazelnuts and the Pumpkin festival) so perhaps we will see you then? We look forward to it.
