About this property

Newly Renovated Child-Friendly Cottage with Pool. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

'La Petite Maison' is a lovely 2 bedroom wheel-chair and child-friendly gite, in the grounds of our farm-house 'La Grande Salle Verte.'

Outside the cottage are 2 private patios with garden furniture, and there are 2 disabled scooters available free of charge for your use.

Inside the cottage is a large, bright south facing ground floor bedroom with emergency pull cord, kingsize bed, reading lights, satellite tv/dvd, walk-in wardrobe, with views to the pool and garden. There is also a ground floor, very spacious wet room and toilet, and a kitchen/sitting room.
Upstairs is a cosy hide-away bedroom (much loved by teenagers), with 2 very low level twin beds and a mobile air-conditioner.

The cottage is fully insulated and double-glazed so it is as warm in winter as it is light and airy in summer. (Naturally, electric blankets are provided in winter, but we promise you won't feel cold in the cottage!)

In 2015,we added wi-fi to La Petite Maison, upgraded and secured the play area, created a separate covered play area with a full sized table tennis table and basketball hoop, and a rustic games room with darts and mini-football and comfortable seating where you can relax and enjoy the last of the sunshine.
2016's project was to renew and heat the swimming pool.
In 2017, we aim to landscape the courtyard to create flower beds, a fountain and seating and provide wi-fi access outdoors

The cottage shares over an acre of grounds with our farmhouse, with a 6 metre heated outdoor pool surrounded by raised decking, flower tubs, sun beds, solar shower, an orchard, a large play area with 2 different size sets of swings, sandpit and large trampoline, a barbecue, and lots of tables and chairs scattered around so you can relax with a glass of wine while keeping an eye on your children.
Part of the orchard is fenced off and here you will find chickens, rabbits, ducks and our baby goats.  Everyone is welcome to help feed the animals and collect the eggs.  You can walk the goats on a lead, and bottle-feed them from spring until September.
Eggs, fruit and vegetables can be purchased from us, when available, as well as homemade cakes, desserts and casseroles; a popular alternative to eating-out. However, the village bar/restaurant/shop is only about 200 yards away and does a lovely lunchtime meal.
Don't take our word for it - come and see for yourselves! For our lovely reviews please find us on Tripadvisor. (We are the highest rated gite locally)

We ask for a 25% deposit to reserve the holiday, plus damages deposit of £100 in advance, and the balance of your holiday paid 4 weeks before arrival.

About the Owner, Mrs Angela Trueman

John and Ange live here with our grand-daughter Selina. We love the laid-back life-style, the space, quiet roads, warmer weather than the UK. Need we go on??

Year property purchased 2010
Why this location? We love this part of France, and fell in love with the orchard and the potential of the buildings.
Unique benefits of property The holiday cottage is suitable for disabled guests, with a double bedroom and large wet-room both on the ground floor.
It is equally lovely for children, with a secure pool, indoor games room, outdoor play area, and of course, goats, chickens, ducks and rabbits all waiting for a cuddle!
We are only 200 yards from the heart of the village, but in a quiet, countryside spot.

The Owner Recommends

Fougeres Town

A sandy man-made beach is ideal for a swim, or lead your children on a Shetland pony round the woods. A land train takes you round the medieval town and the Chateau is a picturesque place to stop for a pastis or hot chocolate. There is also a lovely Aqua centre with flumes, fountains and wave machine. Fougeres has a great market on Saturday mornings and a 10pin bowling alley, and is also home to our favourite "eat as much as you like" Chinese restaurant!

Gorron Park

Gorron is our closest town, it has an indoor/outdoor pool, supermarket and a variety of small shops and restaurants and bars. It also has one of our favourite parks. A river winds through it and you can canoe there, or try your hand at tree-top walking. For smaller children there is a 'basket-chair swing' and walk up the hill to low-level rope-walks among the trees. There is also a barbecue, so you can bring your own charcoal and food, and enjoy a meal there.

Pontmain Pilgrimage Destination

Pontmain is one of France's major pilgrimage sites. It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared to local children. There is now a Basilica on the site, and slideshow in the barn (2 euros in the slot!) where the children were when she appeared. It is well worth a visit and the original church is very picturesque. There is also a gallery showing works from local artists.

Rennes is a busy town around an hour's drive away. It has a bustling Saturday market selling everything from live oysters and lobsters, farmer's own creme fraiche, vegetables, sausages and cheese, to clothes, jewellery, and (my own favourite) a street of fresh flower and plant stalls. The Market is based in 'Place des Lices' in the medieval area of Rennes and which is well worth seeing for its old buildings and cobbled streets.

St Hilaire du Harcouet Market

On a Wednesday, this is a busy market selling everything including livestock. Buy a sausage in a baguette or a crepe (pancake) with chocolate filling, find a seat at a bar, and watch the world go by.

Excellent gite with excellent hosts. Unfortunately it was in a rather remote location and most of the local restaurants were closed. I would definitely visit again but maybe at a different time of year.

Owner response

Thank you for your lovely comments about us and the gite. We are in a small village in the countryside, but we are only 10 minutes by car to two towns with swimming pools, acrobranche, fishing, restaurants and cinemas.
It is especially lovely here in spring (baby lambs and calves, violets and primroses), and autumn, (chestnuts, mushrooms, blackberries, hazelnuts and the Pumpkin festival) so perhaps we will see you then? We look forward to it.

8 / 10 FMHG 7 February, 2016

We had an excellent stay in the summer, with our 5 and 2 year old. The animals and trampoline occupied them for hours and hours, and the nearby swimming pool at Ernee was great. Weather not so good unfortunately but we still had a great time, lovely welcoming family and as many eggs as the chickens could make!

Owner response

Yes, a shame about the weather, but glad you enjoyed your stay with us.We have an indoor games room with mini-football, darts and comfortable seating so you can relax while the children play AND we are extending the covered play area and adding a petanque rink for 2016, so do come again!!

Recently returned from a lovely stay at La Grande Salle Verte and all of family agree that we wish we were still there. Our daughter fell in love with the animals and had a great time playing with Selina. Would recommend this place as perfect for relaxing and using as a base to explore the Mayenne as lots to do and see locally particularly the local markets as recommended by the very helpful hosts Angela & John
Will be seeing them all next year with luck

Owner response

We wish you could have stayed longer too and hope to see you next year, by which time we should have wifi in the grounds as you suggested, as well as (already) in the gite, Pleased you enjoyed the markets we mentioned, (and Noz) and thank you for the wine!

7.5 / 10 printemps 3 July, 2015

Hosts, Angela and John were very welcoming and the welcome pack of home made bread, eggs from their chickens, tin of pilchards, tin of duck mousse, and bottle of rose added to this.

The ground floor is well equipped for wheelchair users, with large wet room, living room and kitchen area combined are small with just enough space for wheelchair.

The downside is the swimming pool which has step ladder leading to small platform and steps going down into small pool.

A small shop in the village provides essentials, which also has a bar.

For people with limited mobility the property is very suitable, the owners even providing electric scooters if required.

Owner response

Thank you for your kind comments and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay. You are right, the 6metre above ground pool is not really suitable for people with restricted mobility, but we are glad you enjoyed the rest of the grounds.
