About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Colin & Linda Copperthwaite

We moved to France from the UK in 2016 seeking a more relaxed way of life and at 'La Jeusseliniere', we certainly found it! Our hobbies include classic cars, motocross, barn finds, shabby chic-ing, chatting, being good hosts to our guests and generally always keeping busy. We love tinkering around the house and gardens and always interested in finding something different to do.

Owner's website
Year property purchased 2016
Why this location? We chose this location as we wanted to be within easy reach for our guests travelling from the UK. We are on the borders of Pays de la Loire, Brittany and Lower Normandy in a semi rural location affording our guests peace and tranquillity yet within easy reach of some fantastic places to visit such as Mont St Michel, St. Malo, Cancale, Fougeres and many coastal and historic beaches.

We have created our own little bit of paradise and we are looking forward to sharing it with you - with just the sound of birdsong you can sit and relax in one of many cosy seating areas in the grounds of our property. You most likely will be accompanied by the chickens or the ducks, the cat or the dog but they are all so loveable with their own personalities that we are sure you will love them too!

With no light pollution the sky at night is simply amazing. Just sitting around the fire-pit on a warm summers evening, a burger in one hand and a beer in the other – what a perfect end to a perfect day.
Unique benefits of property Our aim has been to create a home from home with the accommodations offered. Both gîtes are cosy and comfy - from good quality mattresses to a full and well equipped kitchen. The grounds and its facilities are one of the most important features for our gites – not only do we have bicycles and a swimming pool, table tennis and other outside activities Colin is more than happy to offer rides to the children (and adults) on his tractor. From feeding the chickens in the morning to collecting the eggs later in the day this is the perfect place for your children to 'make a camp' - explore, play and make new friends.

The Owner Recommends

Local area

La Jeusseliniére/Jolie Grange is located in Larchamp, a village in the Mayenne which is in the Pays de la Loire region.
Larchamp is in an ideal position from which to explore the Loire, Normandy and Brittany, or simply as a stopover en-route. We are located on the edge of the village of Larchamp with the centre being a 15 minute stroll away where you will find a bakers, bar, restaurant, hairdresser and pretty 14th century church. There are some delightful historical walks around the village and a memorial to the US servicemen who liberated the village from the WWII occupation.

The local market town of Ernee is approximately 6 miles away and the medieval World Heritage town of Fougéres is 11 miles.

There are many beautiful gardens close by; including Jardin de la Pellerine and the magnificent Parc Botanique de Haute Bretagne.

Within easy driving distance are many more historic towns boasting a wealth of castles and ancient buildings to explore, for example a 30 minutes drive will take you to Jublains, Vitré, Mayenne and Laval. Less than an hour's drive will take you to Le Mans, Dinan, St.Malo, Mont St. Michel, Rennes, D Day memorial sites and Alencon to name but a few.

Mont Saint-Michel

Less than an hour's drive will take you to Mont St. Michel, Dinan, St.Malo, Le Mans, Rennes, D Day memorial sites and Alencon to name but a few.

The medieval island village of Mont Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sits right off France’s Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Couesnon River. Crowned by a Gothic abbey that sits atop the rocky isle, Mont Saint-Michel rises dramatically from the tidal flats of the bay, creating one of the country’s most recognizable images. It’s a must-see for history buffs and those interested in religious sites, and visits are often combined with tours through the region of Normandy.

American Military Cemetery

American Military Cemetery Tours and Tickets
The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial may very well be the most visited American military cemetery in the world after Arlington, and with good reason: It is an emotional experience that stays with visitors long after they've returned home from their travels, even if they've never given much thought to World War II battle history.

Utah Beach Tours

Omaha Beach, with its Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, receives the most visitors looking to learn more about WWII history and pay their respects. But what many don't know is that Utah Beach, the western most landing point of the D-Day battle, has its own fantastic museum. If you're planning an overnight stay in Bayeux in order to explore the various WWII sites in Normandy, the Utah Beach D-Day Museum should be right near the top of your list.

Saint Malo

Saint Malo's History

Nicknamed the Corsair City, Saint Malo has a long connection with explorers and long-haul sailors; Jacques-Cartier, Surcouf and Duguay-Trouin all grew up here. The walled town is built like a stone ship facing out to sea, with its ramparts standing proudly over long beaches and a lively port. To relive its turbulent past and the epic saga of its great historical figures, take a walk along the ramparts, climb aboard a unique sailing ship, or go inside one of themalouinières, the impressive homes of former wealthy ship-owners. It’s all part of Saint-Malo’s heritage.

Go Medieval in Dinan

Hear ye, good people! Behind the walls of the fortified town of Dinan, the Middle Ages are back! Built on a hill high above the Rance valley, the town still has 3 km of ramparts, four impressive gates, 15 towers and a lattice of cobbled streets lined with beautiful half-timbered houses. Every other summer, the Fête des Remparts brings Dinan’s golden age back to life, with traditional costumes and performances. From Dinan, carry on up to Léhon, designated a Small Town of Character thanks to its rich historical heritage, which includes an abbey-church attached to a former monastery and the ruins of a castle-fortress. The middle ages are here in all their glory!

The main reason to visit Fougères is to see its magnificent castle, one of the finest fortresses in Europe, but this little town on the Brittany-Normandy border also has a lovely medieval district and a lively Saturday morning market.

1000 years of history.

There has been a castle in Fougères for more than 1,000 years as this site, on a promontory sheltered by hills and surrounded by marshes, was identified by the Duchy of Brittany as the perfect spot to defend its lands from the French. The current castle dates from the 12th century and consists of 3 enclosures whose walls are dotted with towers: the most impressive is the Mélusine Tower. The castle, where history is brought to life via images and sounds, is a must visit for both adults and kids alike and a walk around the ramparts is not to be missed.

Le Mans

Le Mans is an easy short trip by car and includes a mighty chunk of Roman wall, a thrilling night-time light show, the tomb of Richard the Lionheart’s queen and a very special tea room. And could we mention a certain 24-hour car race.

Vitré is a historic town in central Brittany, in the Ille-et-Vilaine department. Because of its location Vitré is less visited than it would be if nearer the coast - but if you have the time we suggest you make the effort to get here!

Explore Vitré

Vitré has a very attractive and extensive well maintained old town centre with lots of narrow streets lined with medieval cottages and also a magnificent castle and is perhaps the most impressive medieval town in Brittany.

The old town has a very large number of lovely colombage (half-timbered) houses, and is one of the few places in France where you can see a complete gothic style town. There are also numerous cafes and bars where you can take a pause in your explorations.

We had a really good 2 weeks at the gite, it was very comfortable and clean. Linda and Colin are very nice hosts and very helpful. While we were there our 2nd week was really hot so the pool was a definite luxury. The cherry trees were full of cherries so we gorged on them every time we came back to the gite after a day out. Delicious.
We went to the market in Rennes on the Saturday morning, well worth the trip, so many stalls with delicious looking food, fruit, cheese, bread etc. We also went to Le Petite Auberge one evening, the owner spoke really good English and the food was delicious and it was only a 10 minute drive away. We discovered a baguette vending machine in the little village of La Pellerine which was very handy on Sunday when we forgot to buy bread before the shops closed.
All in all a very good holiday.
