Terrace with lighting, bbq, patios, boule area and table tennis. Enjoy quiet lanes, marked trails and Mervant Forest for cycling and walking. Visit local attractions. Golf, fishing and horse riding in the area. Take day trips to the Vendée beaches, Marais Poitevin (boating), La Rochelle, Futuroscope and the Loire Valley. Major international attraction, the Puy du Fou entertainment park, is only about twenty minutes away by car.

A big bonus is the proximity to the Internationally famous entertainment park, 'Puy du Fou', which is approximately twenty minutes by car. Essential to book well ahead for July and August.

Large sandy beaches on the Vendee coast a drive of about 1.15-1.30 hours.

Extensive cycle tracks in the Vendee. We do not provide bicycles but they can be hired locally.

Heated kidney-shaped swimming pool (approx 10 x 5m) with lockable safety cover. Exclusive use of pool. Pool terrace and lighting, seating and sunloungers.

Lower terrace with dining table and sun canopy and bbq.

Large garden with several areas for sitting and plenty of room for children to play safely.

2 large barns for car parking.

Interesting wildlife. Birds (including Hoopoes in spring) and butterflies (including swallowtails), resident hedgehog.

Long off-road driveway for further vehicles.

Visitor suitability

Changes of level in the house unfortunately make it not very suitable for people who use a wheelchair and are not otherwise mobile.

Dogs are accepted with prior agreement with the owner.

The farmhouse is very old and rambling. If you have a large party it is best to discuss suitability with the owner.

Well worth the drive, with a superb range of food stalls set in the attractive old part of the town. Open every day, but Wednesday and Saturday are the big days.

Combine a visit to the market with some serious shopping, including excellent clothes shops, such as Galeries Lafayette.

Location and activities

In a quiet hamlet 10km south of Pouzauges, with a wide range of activities available within 1 to 1½ hours drive.

Maison de la Vie Rurale

Gives an insight into rural life and geography in the area. Interesting garden with strange vegetables (for example, spiny tomatoes!) and flowers.

Manoir des Sciences

Former home of Ferchault de Réaumur, an amazing amateur scientist and inventor, interactive displays and animations.

Marais Poitevin

Also known as ‘La Venise Verte’ or ‘Green Venice’ – an area of low lying land north of La Rochelle, with a network of narrow canals. Hire a punt and take a leisurely route along the canals.

It has to be seen, no description can do it justice!

Main Positives:
- well stocked kitchen
- good eating areas
- games and puzzles
- pool and pretty gardens
- house has character
- nice showers and bath
- had character
- great washer, dryer and freezer space
- helpful and responsive owners next door

Main drawbacks:
- due to layout kids bedrooms opened out onto communal areas so noise needs to be kept to minimum when kids sleeping
- lots of flies during our time there (farming area) - so maximise all insect repellents provided as this helps keep them at bay

Local attractions
- Parc du Bruene - quirky but fun park in mervent region
- Green venice - punting
- Mervent area for walks and canoeing
- Puy du Fou - a MUST visit for this area, spectacular shows.

I would highly recommend this property. It was lovely and clean with very comfortable beds and very well maintained- the owners asked at the end of our stay if there was anything that we noticed that needed repair/replacement. Dawn and Graham were on hand if we needed anything, but left us to enjoy our holiday. We have never stayed anywhere that was as well equipped- the enormous mugs for tea were wonderful!
We loved the extra covered space for ping pong and table football, particularly good for the days when it wasn't great weather.
The pool was clean and warm and spacious enough to allow for three floats and 9 bodies all in one go! The outdoor space was very large- enough for a game of football and boules.
The little village is close by and has a delightful boulangerie with very tasty treats- we requested an order for the following day each time we went in and the were more than happy to accommodate.

Absolutely brilliant time had by all, pool situation with a cover (to shelter from the direct sunlight) was perfect. The house was the best equipped we have ever stayed in and absolutely spotless. Although secluded the nearby towns are friendly and easily accessible. Beautiful garden, spacious quirky accommodation with plenty of places for a quiet read if required. Both toilets are situated downstairs and low beams enhance the character of the house. It is beautifully cool when too hot outside.
We loved it!
Owners are super helpful but not at all intrusive, on hand if needed.
Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.
