The owner enjoys a French escape from the daily routine of being an accountant based in London. Sharing the villa and area with guests since letting it has been and continues to be a great source of pleasure. The aim is cover the annual running costs and not to profit from rentals. Any spare Euro found languishing in the croissant purse is saved and spent on the villa. Carpets at home in Twick are (still) looking neglected.

|Why this location?||It's in the ideal spot in a village with plenty of restaurants, small shops and French year round residents and also only 10 minutes from the Vendée beaches. It's close to two airports, La Rochelle and Nantes, there are many vineyards to visit and tastings to be done together with elegant coastal towns including Les Sables D'Olonne and La Rochelle. Inland from the villa is Lucon, Fontenay Le Compte and many other quaint French towns all with restaurants, parks and culture to visit.|
|Unique benefits of property||It has character and original features with modern conveniences such as air conditioning and wi-fi. The private garden is a good size and faces south with a private heated in-ground pool. It is a 5 minute walk at the most to a croissant, cafe, beer, market and most other needs. It is value for money, aiming to cover the annual running costs only.|
All the wines in the French shops with a simply drawn owl logo come from this vineyard. The approach from the main road is open and easy to spot from the car. About 30 mins from the villa this wine tour and the tastings are very interesting. They are welcoming and allow you to walk with a guide through the actual bottling area and the entire wine making process. They have organic wines to try as well as sparkling reds. Well worth a visit.
On Sundays and Wednesdays the market brings the best of French fruits, meats, rotisserie chickens, cheeses, salamis, wines, breads, fish, shellfish, salads, vegetables and plenty of souvenirs for the children.
There are many cycle tracks in the Vendée. Cycle hire shops are in La Tranche sur Mer and other villages near by. There are guide books on cycle tracks at the Angles tourist office.
Open 365 days of the year and wonderful. Reasonably priced and highly recommended by previous guests with young children as a good day out.
Good family day out, whizzing on zip wires and climbing through courses up in the tree canopy. It has 4 different courses and many other activities. Restaurants are on site. It is approximately 15 minutes away in the car, in Moutiers-Les-Mauxfaits.
Just 4 miles down the road are the local beaches with miles of clean sand. They are along one straight road from Angles to Les Conches.
Our favourite restaurant in Angles, and it is far from just pizza's, although they are good, the owners David and Emilie are both from the border of France with Switzerland and create great food every night and always with a smile. Best to book on weekend nights.
Scallops, lamb shank, steak, chicken, wonderful salads, frogs legs, snails, prawns are all on the menu at varying times through the seasons.
Tel 02 51 97 58 41. David speaks good English and helps with your French. The best part, it is a five minute walk from the villa.
L'Etage restaurant is in La Tranche sur Mer and never fails to produce excellent food and great service. All the meat and fish is cooked on a grate over embers in the restaurant. Summer eating on the terrace should be booked in advance.
10 Rue de Artistide Briand, 85360 La Tranche sur Mer +33(0)2 51 30 01 02
La Grille de la Forge is also in La Tranche and produces fine food, fish, steaks, huge burgers and much more. Again, book in the morning of the day you would like eat there is recommended in the summer weeks. 38 Ave de la Plage, La Tranche sur Mer. +33(0)2 51 30 12 99
Live music some evenings https://youtu.be/PWd01GeEUPw
Another good restaurant is Le Blue Mob and on this evening they had a great band to add to the atmosphere without overtaking it https://youtu.be/UzOTbE6WVso
There is an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. We recommend it in the late afternoon for a relaxing swim before eating in one of the many La Tranche-sur-Mer restaurants. The outdoor pool is open until 7pm in the summer.
There are surf shops with all equipment for hire and lessons available. Les Conches beach and La Terrier beach and La Tranche Sur Mer beach have all options including windsurfing and kite surfing with hire of wetsuits if required. This is just 4 miles away. Body surfing is great especially at La Terrier, the beach is wide and slops gradually, the waves come in fairly straight with low current.
One of the best activities is to sit outside at the bar with a tea, coffee, shandy, lager, wine, something stronger and watch the world go by. Just a 5 minute walk from the villa.
There are a large selection of local restaurants to choose from. Some within walking distance in the village, Angles, and many more just 10 mins by car in La Tranche. We have yet to find a bad one.
An elegant town with some historic buildings to explore followed by lunch in a range of top restaurants and eclectic bistros.
Casa de Meme is one such eccentric bistro by the market, L'Aunis is one of the restaurants towards the fine dining end of choice. There are many in between and all are very good.
There is also a grand traditional tea house facing onto the main square, away from the quay. The drive to La Rochelle from the villa is a favourite, going through many pretty villages on the way.
There is a new water park now open just 10 minutes from the villa. It is called O'Gliss and is owned by the same team as Indian Forest, a 'Go Ape' type of adventure activity destination for all ages.
Landscaped gardens surround the chateau. Activities within the beautiful and extensive grounds stimulate both children and parents of all ages. It is in the pretty town of Avrille.
About 20 mins inland from the villa Lucon is a pretty town with cafes, restaurants, shops and a huge church. Worth a visit.
Up the coast, about 25 mins in the car is this handsome town with tall architectural buildings, an expanse of beach stretching along the length of the town. Shops, restaurants, cafes and a Zoo as well as the amazing beach, but as you have beaches much nearer you may probably visit Sables for the town and just stand and stare at the enormous beach. Beautiful.
Historic monument in the pretty town of Fontenay-Le-Comte. www.chateau-terreneuve.com. Similar to a National Trust experience.
There are plenty of places to fish and birdwatch in the area, Marais Poitevin is a marshland area very close to the villa and is rich in wildlife.
We spent a fun and relaxing week at Maison Vendee. It is a gorgeous, stylish villa, well equipped, with a lovely pool and a great village location (perfect for a stroll to the boulangerie or the excellent market).
Our children (12, 10 and 7) loved the pool, games and DVD collection. So I would highly recommend the house to other families - though not multi-generational groups if there are any mobility issues... Granny (82) came with us too. She was happy in the downstairs bedroom but was wobbly in the shower and getting in and out of the pool. But we have no complaints - the house was not advertised as being particularly suitable for elderly or unsteady guests.
Lisa was very efficient with communication and the house was equipped with exhaustive information about activities, outings and the surrounding area. We visited the local water park, which was great fun, and had one day at the amazing Puy du Fou parc (could have spent longer!).
Oh thank you Nancy for writing this kind and also informative review. I really appreciate it and I know that future guests will too.
You have given me the idea of providing a special shower chair, although the shower room is conveniently next to the ground floor bedroom and many family generations have enjoyed it over the last six years, I want the unsteady grandparents to be part of these special family gatherings too.
I'm glad you enjoyed the stay and have happy memories of it.
We had a great time staying at Maison Vendee for a week in August. We were two families with four children aged 6 and under and the house is perfectly set up for this kind of trip. Obviously the pool is a great bonus but little touches like toys and a wide DVD collection at the house really help.
All of the rooms were good sizes and clean and the house is obviously well maintained, it was just as it looks on the listings which is not always the case.
The village the house is in is lovely, with the basics you would need in terms of a shop, a bar, two bakeries and a couple of restaurants and a bank with cash machine - plus the twice weekly market is very popular with people travelling from surrounding towns and villages to visit.
Whilst the house is not located walking distance from the beach, it is a very short distance to a number of beaches in a car and if you had bikes you could also certainly cycle easily enough. We mainly went to the beach at La Terriere, which was easy to get to with a large car park but there are also lots of beaches in La Tranche Sur Mer itself if you want more of a town beach.
Would recommend and hope to return!
I really appreciate you taking the time to write this and of course am delighted you enjoyed your stay. It’s a pleasure to share the villa and local area with visitors, and I’m sure now that we are all back to the grind of work, fans of the French way of life will be looking at next year’s holiday and your very helpful review helps them decide on their accommodation in the area.
This is a great house in a fantastic location, unbeatable! We (2 adults, 4 kids -13,12,9 &7) spent a week here in August. The location means you are walking distance from bar/restaurant/boulangerie etc and a 2 minute drive from a medium sized supermarket. 10 minute drive away is the bigger town of La Tranche Sur Mer and a large supermarket, plenty of restaurants and several amazing beaches (our favourites were Les Conches and La Terriere).
The house itself is in a peaceful location with a -more or less - enclosed rear garden including a well maintained pool, perfect for cooling off, as well as BBQ and boules pitch. The house is equipped with everything you need and has a lovely home-from-home feel.
The owner is a very responsible ‘host’ and communicated all the information we needed as well as being easily contactable with any queries while we were there, responding promptly.
Could not recommend highly enough!
What very kind feedback for us and for future holidayers, thank you very much Nicola for taking the time to write this. You are all welcome again anytime.
Lovely stay in Maison Vendee, we were provided with everything needed to have a relaxing stay in the sun, the pool making a huge difference. Being so close to Angles, La Tranche and lovely beaches, we were spoilt for choice with activities, food and most importantly drinks. Being very coastal we would recommend the mussels, they are as fresh as they can get and amazing portion sizes. Thank you Lisa for everything, we will definitely be back very soon!
Thank you very much for your kind review. Really delighted you enjoyed your stay and the local food and beaches.
You are of course welcome back anytime.
