Having lived in France since August 2005, our family consists of our 3 daughters, 2 labradors and 2 cats. We have run a Gite business, also in the Vendee since 2008 and this year decided to add an extra property to our portfolio.

|Why this location?||A true get away from it destination. Les Roullieres consists of only 15 houses. You have the gardens, swimming pool and games garage to entertain you. We do provide tv with free to air channels and a selection of dvds. We are less than 10 minutes from the oak forests at Mervent. 10 minutes to the "petite cite de character" of Foussais Payre. 10 minutes to the lakeside beach at Xanton with slides, diving pontoon, shallow area and lifeguard, bar with snacks, toilets, a picnic area and children's playframe. Within 20 minutes are the port areas of the Marais Poitevin and around 1 hours drive brings you to the coast and beaches of both the South Vendee and the Charente Maritime.|
|Unique benefits of property||Quiet, rural, get away from it all destination. No shared facilities. Totally relaxing holiday.|
traditional French auberge with fixed menu (no choices) including, starter, meat dish with vegetable (fresh from their garden), green salad, cheese, dessert, coffee and 1/4 vin (25cl) included for 11,50 euros, lunchtime only Monday to Friday.
About a 15 minute drive this is the nearest place for the larger hypermarkets on the outskirts of town. The town itself is an old Renaissance town on the river with a variety of restaurants, bars and shops.
A bit further afield about 1.5 hours away, this peninsular has beaches on either side. It has a fish market in the town centre where you can pay a cover fee at the restaurant outside for bread, lemon, water etc, then go inside and pick what shellfish you would like pay the stall holders direct and they will prepare it for you to eat. There is also a small funfair open in nights. Plus at the tip of the peninsular you can take the ferry to Ile d'Aix which is a very small island with no cars (only service vehicles occasionally).
The principal town for the area Les Rouilleres comes under. Here you will find a bank with cash point, a tourist information office, an interactive tourist information screen, a small chain supermarket (proxi), an independent grocer with tabac and newspapers, the Auberge de Ste Catherine restaurant and bar, a Pizzeria with bar and snacks, an antique shop, and a chocolate shop. Given accreditation in France as a Petite cite de charactere.
Adventure theme park about one hour away. More suitable for older children.
Reached via toll bridge from just outside La Rochelle this is a lovely island with various beaches and villages. The capital of St Martin de Re has a lovely harbour with bars and restaurants and shopping on gently slopping hills. There is a church at the top of the hill which for a small entrance fee allows you to climb to the roof and the views are amazing. Be aware it is a very steep climb up a narrow wood and stone spiral staircase.
One of our favourite places, great for people watching, seeing the yachts, visiting the town beach and the beach outside town, visiting the aquarium, taking a boat trip, enjoying fresh fish and moules in various sauces at the variety of restaurants, also some individual boutiques for shopping. 1 hour drive.
Just around the corner the local zoo is open every day and has a variety of animals including lions, tigers, wolves. The petting area with the pygmy goats is a challenge to get out of without having your clothes eaten!
Very local activity park with trampolines, inflatables, motor boats, long slide etc. Very close by about 10 minutes away.
Award winning park with a variety of shows, do not miss the bird show. About 1 hour away. Advisable to get there early to fit in all the shows.
English run fish and chip van which is at Le Fil de L'Eau restaurant on Thursday evening between 630 and 830pm, if you are missing your home comforts.
this is a network of canals called the Marais Poitevin reclaimed from the sea. famous in france they cross the Vendee, the Deux-Sevres and Charente Maritime departments. There are numerous port areas on the Marais where you can hire boats or take a guided tour. There are also bike hire stations at some ports. The most popular one is at Coulon, also Maillezais, Arcais, Damvix, Le Mazeau.
I shouldn't review as more people will visit! Exactly what we wanted, which is rare as it's never 'what it says on the tin' every time I've booked a holiday in France. Owners are amazing, non intrusive, I requested a blanket late one evening and it was there in the early morning. Even the early morning pool clean, quiet and discreet visit.
Quiet area of the countryside, a few houses nearby and near a road but not a worry. It was so relaxing at the Lodge that even the cockerel didn't bother me! Rooms are spacious and the garden big enough for badminton. The pool is a real winner, especially as we had it heated for the 2nd week as the weather wasn't so great (1st time in 10yrs of visiting France). The table tennis in the garage was also great.
Property was clean and fresh bedding for all beds and extra beds. Nice bottle of wine awaited our arrival, nice little touch.
Like I said, we loved our holiday so much we were going to stay an extra week as the very hot weather was arriving for the following week, unfortunately Hazel had a booking already.
The lodge was located in a quiet country area but was peaceful with easy access to the many local villages and towns. The lodge is very well appointed providing lots of space and comfort. All of our family thoroughly enjoyed the pool and games room at the lodge. Hazel and Dave were very supportive hosts and really helped make our stay thoroughly enjoyable.
We would all highly recommend the lodge.
