Lilac Cottage is located in the village of St Valerien, less than 20 minutes from Fontenay le Comte. The village has its own little bar and several of the nearby villages have their own cafés, bakeries, shops and restaurants. Fontenay has two large hypermarkets, restaurants, banks, shops and a weekly market selling lots of local produce.
The area is dotted with interesting villages and towns - lots with medieval churches, châteaux and castles. Vouvant, Bazoges, Mervent forest and lakes and many more.
The country lanes surrounding St Valerien are perfect for cycling and walking - with over a 1100km of signposted routes in the Vendée to choose from. You'll cycle past fields of sunflowers, canals, pretty villages and quiet forests.
The beaches of the Southern Vendée are less than an hour away - with La Faute sur Mer and La Tranche sur Mer being the closest - both have bustling towns next to the beaches - where you can relax in pavement cafés.
La Rochelle is only an hour away, and this is a fantastic place for a day trip - with its aquarium, harbour side restaurants, ancient harbour towers and street entertainment in the summer. Combine this with a trip across the bridge to the beautiful island of Ile de Ré and you have the perfect day out!
The main tourist attraction for the Vendée is the world famous Puy du Fou theme park - less than an hour's drive away. This is a 'Must See' for everyone visiting the area. Fun for all the family and all ages - with vikings, gladiators, knights, musketeers and an amazing bird of prey show.
For a more relaxing day out - The Marais Poitevin is only 30 minutes away - here you can punt along the canals at Coulon, wander through the ruined abbey at Maillezais or have lunch in one of the many canal-side restaurants in the many pretty towns.
Lilac Cottage is a delightful well appointed holiday cottage that is immaculate. The swimming pool is fabulous and the owners make every effort to ensure that it is heated to a pleasant temperature and kept clean. There is a new boules court which is fantastic and provides good entertainment as well as table tennis and a range of pool toys. The grounds are well looked after and provide a lovely area to sit and relax in, with plenty of shade available for those who want to escape from the sun.
The owners are warm, friendly and welcoming and cannot do enough for you. They gave us lots of tips about the region and ideas of places to visit.
We would definitely stay here again when back in the region and would absolutely recommend Lilac Cottage to friends and family.
We had a wonderful holiday at Lilac Cottage. The house and gardens were beautiful. The owners were very welcoming and were there if we needed them or if we needed any advice on places to visit. Would definitely recommend this property and hopefully will be returning again soon ourselves as we had an amazing family holiday there.
Thank you Rebekah ...You and your family were fabulous guests in every way ..Glad you enjoyed your stay. Sue & David
Sue and David have done a superb job renovating Lilac Cottage.
The high standard of the refit is obvious as soon as you enter the dining kitchen.
The rest of the cottage is finished to the same standard.
The grounds are well maintained, David was out cleaning the pool and watering the plants each morning, the pool is a good size and is a salt water pool which makes a pleasant change, the level of salt is just right and didn't bother our eyes at all.
Sue and David are easy going and friendly, there if you need them but not if you don't, just a knock on next door away and a mine of local information.
We will certainly consider visiting again.
Thanks so much RIchard It was a great pleasure introducing you and your family to Lilac cottage.
We absolutely loved our visit to Lilac Cottage, we truly felt at home for our relaxing weeks stay. The cottage is in a beautiful setting, spacious, well equipped, clean and very tastefully furnished. We had everything we needed for our stay, including some welcome gifts from our hosts Sue and David. The swimming pool was ideal in the gorgeous weather – we came with our grown up family and they had as much fun in the pool and with all the other activities as any small child!
We love this region of France, such a range of things to do and delicious food – would certainly recommend a trip to La Rochelle, Mervent and Île de Ré.
Sue and David were amazing, welcoming hosts – they were always on hand to help and answer our questions and yet they made sure they never imposed on our tranquil holiday. We would certainly recommend Lilac Cottage – in fact we were so happy with it that we have already decided to come back for a stay next year!
Judith &Andrew It was an absolute pleasure meeting & introducing you and the family to Lilac Cottage and very much looking forward to your visit next year. Best wishes Sue & David
