The Gites are perfect for a family use. With the 2 gites available, we often receive bookings for 2 families together, so friends can spend time together, but also have a little privacy if required.
Regrettably, because the gites are old buildings, they are not suitable for wheelchair access.
Richard & Sue own La Treille and the two gites, La Treille & Old Garlands. Having lived in the South East of England all our lives, we were looking for a slower pace of life in a more rural setting. We looked at many properties over a number of years before we visited "La Treille" and we were blown away by the stunning setting. So many of our guests have come back to stay for 5 to 6 years in succession as they have found the setting to be so peaceful.
|Year property purchased||2011|
|Why this location?||La Caillere is located in the Southern area of the Vendee, an area of rolling countryside dotted with lakes and forests. Our home is at the edge of a village in a semi-rural location. Plenty of things to do and see for the more active, but peaceful and relaxing if that is what you prefer. We are lucky enough to own a fabulous period property (dating back to Napoleonic times) with huge character and a superb two and a half acre garden. A perfect place to relax and enjoy the sunshine! Access from the UK is easy, with regular flights from several UK airports to Nantes (1 hour from us), La Rochelle (1 hour from us) and Poitiers (90 minutes). Driving is easy too, (much easier than in the UK) with ferry crossings to Caen, Cherbourg, Le Harve, Dieppe, Calais and don't forget the Euro Tunnel.|
|Unique benefits of property||Whilst viewing potential properties to buy over a number of years, we were struck by the poor accommodation offered by many of the holiday cottages/gites.
We looked at providing holiday accommodation that we would be happy to stay in ourselves and this has resulted in 2 gites of a very high quality and standard.
We have had many guests returning year after year. Most tend to book within a week or 2 of leaving us! The record so far is 6 years with the seventh year already booked. Many of our guests have become more like friends and we look forward to seeing them each year.
Travel to us is pretty easy with a number of airports to choose from, plus the Eurotunnel and a number of ferry crossings to choose from.
There are many things to do here, all within a reasonable distance. The fabulous beach at La Tranche sur Mer is less than a hour's drive, the world famous Puy de Fou is within an hour and is an absolute must for families, huge forests, activity centres, water parks etc.
La Puy du Fou is a fabulous place to visit for families. Visit their website for details
The Mervant Forest............there are plenty of walks in the forest, around lakes, cycle trails, running trails, activity centre with boating hire, restaurants.
Vouvant.........voted among the 5 most beautiful villages in France. Both English and French owned restaurants and a number of privately owned shops to visit.
La Tranche sur Mer......fabulous sandy beaches for miles
Île de Ré.......beautiful harbour with quality shops and good restaurants
This was our first time staying at Old Garlands and we already looking as to when we can go back. Richard and Sue welcomed us after a long drive and were always on around for advice on where to go and what to see. The gite was very clean and very well looked after. You feel like you are in middle of nowhere, excellent to unwind and relax, however you are not far from anywhere. We visited La Rochelle, beaches, the Mervent forest and the truly astounding Puy Du Fou - a must see! The swimming pool was lovely to cool down and I managed to beat my son 4 sets to love on the tennis court :-). In short, Old Garlands was the perfect base for relaxation and days out and the work that Richard and Sue have put into making it a friendly and welcoming place is very evident, along with Barney and Rubble - nearly forgot them! I would recommend it in a heartbeat to all.
We had an absolutely fantastic week staying at Old Garlands. Sue and Richard are wonderfully welcoming hosts who made sure any questions were answered and that we had everything we needed. Old Garlands has been renovated to a five star standard. Everything was extremely comfortable, clean and in excellent order. The kitchen was very well equipped. We all enjoyed the swimming pool and tennis court, and our children loved the space to play in the grounds. The next door village can supply you with all your basic needs - excellent baker, butcher and small supermarket. We didn't venture too far as we enjoyed just relaxing by the pool and sitting out on the terrace enjoying the sights and smells of Sue's beautiful garden. However, there is lots to do in the area and we hope to back for a two week stay as one week just wasn't long enough.
