Mark & I moved to France in 2000 from Lancashire, (when I was made redundant from teaching ... a long story!) We had bought our 'pile of rubble' in 1993 as a retirement project, but we took the plunge and are very happy in our 'almost finished' little farmhouse. Now well and truly retired, well I am, Mark still works in his office in our barn, he regards it as a hobby (architecture). We live 3km from our lovely 'Bee Cottage', which is in our favourite village, Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche.
|Year property purchased||2001|
|Why this location?||Bee Cottage had never been lived in, so needed total renovation, but we fell in love when we saw the 'For Sale' sign; it is so cute! The added bonus is that it is in our very favourite village.|
|Unique benefits of property||Bee Cottage is only a two minute (flat) walk into Beaulieu's centre, where there are all amenities, restaurants, boulangeries, little supermarket, doctors' surgery, chemist, walking trails, and so much more. The magnificent Atlantic beaches are only 25 minutes drive, so far enough from the crowds! The round-the-world yacht race sets off every 4 years from Les Sables d'Olonne - 2020 (November 8th) is a definite date for your diary, if you are a fan! Beaulieu-sous-la-Roche holds the Vendée's biggest & most popular Christmas Market weekend, at the beginning of December. The village is also a 'Village d'Arts' and it has many and varied exhibitions and workshops run by extremely talented and diverse artists. Only 3 hours from St Malo ferry port and 1 hour Nantes Airport.
Bee Cottage is only a 3 hour drive from the ferries (4 hours Caen), so would also be a good stopover point for travellers heading further South.
Super-friendly bar/restaurant, with an ideal 'people-watching' terrace!
Closed Tuesday & Thursday evening, but open lunchtime and all other evenings. Christophe and Isa often have a themed menu last Friday of the month (reservation usually needed, as these are very popular!)
Lovely big Supermarket - about 8 minutes drive from Bee Cottage.
We go about every 2 weeks - apparently, the Entrecote frites is wonderful! I tend to stick with pasta or pizza, which is always equally wonderful!
Take away available as well.
Two minutes from Bee Cottage - eat in, out, or takeaway. Large menu, but mainly burgers (beef and chicken) and chips, type of food. Very nice chicken burgers! Another people-watching place, but with a tv for sport things!
With its Chateau and lovely church, Apremont is a beautiful little town built on rock. Lake Apremont has a sandy beach, water sports, fishing, picnic areas and a restaurant overlooking it. Various bars, restaurants and a popular gift shop 'Les Beaux Cadeaux' (English-run, by Anne and Beth). Keep an eye out for the fantastic events held round the chateau, especially in August.
Dine inside or out, lunch & evening. Takeaways as well. Opposite Hyper-U supermarket.
