About this property

Great Views, Rural Setting, Shared Pool. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

The property is a recent barn conversion with original wood beams set in peaceful countryside within 5 minutes walk of the village of Manses. We have superb views across open countryside to the Pyrenees.

The property is set in 95 acres of fields and woodland belonging to the owners. This ensures tranquillity as well as privacy.

Guests are welcome to use our 12 metre by 6 metre pool. A large patio to the south allows outdoor dining with views to the Pyrenees. For those who enjoy walking, the ancient pilgrims route, Chemin du St Jacques de Compostelle, passes by the rear of Le Cazal. Days can be passed by the pool or enjoying nearby activities of walking, hiking, cycling, skydiving, parachuting, rafting, canoeing, horse riding, golf and skiing to name but a few.

Market day in the medieval town of Mirepoix (5 miles) should not be missed. Within easy reach of Carcassonne (50 mins), Toulouse (80 mins), Mediterranean beaches (Narbonne 90 mins) and ski slopes (Ax les Thermes 40 mins).

The Mediterranean beaches are within reach for a day out. Narbonne is approximately 90 minutes by car and offers beautiful sandy beaches with a calm sea. There are also opportunities for beach and sea fishing.

Some nearby lakes offer beaches, swimming and watersports. The nearest to us is the lovely Lac Montbel(20 miles), Puivert(25 miles), Lac de la Cavayere at Carcassonne(40 miles) and the Lac de Mondely (30 miles).

The nearest airports are Carcassonne, 35 miles - 50 minutes, and Toulouse Blagnac, 60 miles - 70 minutes. Car hire is recommended although bicycle hire can be arranged once at Le Cazal.

The village of Manses is a 5 minute stroll. Mirepoix, an ancient bastide town with its famous 'couverts' and market is 5 miles distant. Carcassonne offers a variety of shops and markets and of course the famous castle or cité is a 50 minute car ride. Montsegur, famed Cathar town and castle is 50 minutes to the south. The climb up to the castle is well worth the effort as the views on a clear day are spectacular.

You may never have stumbled upon Ariège-Pyrénées; most people haven't. It's a hidden gem: the ‘other’ south of France: a rural and sparsely populated area of outstanding natural beauty, laid back charm and good living. Explore green foothills and majestic Pyrenean peaks; potter round local markets and medieval towns; walk on peaceful paths and drive on quiet roads; marvel at the sheer variety of flora and fauna and stand and stare at breathtaking views. The Ariège is just about as far south as you can go and still be in France - we’re farther south than Nice - and is bordered by Spain and Andorra. There are just six main towns, the largest of which has a population of just over 15,000, many small villages and hamlets, and some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country. The Pyrenees are rarely out of sight and form a stunning backdrop all over the department, with the highest peaks rising to around 3000 metres. Medieval cités, Cathar castles, lovely Romanesque churches and authentic bastide towns and villages are all on your doorstep. There are lots of prehistoric sites, including some of the most extensive caves in Europe. You can climb or ski in the high mountains, go canoeing, gliding or paragliding, spend a couple of hours in a thermal spa or dance the night away at one of our many festivals. And it’s all totally unspoilt, totally uncommercial. Okay, we’re biased … but this really is a magical area!

Ariège is perfect for walking with well marked paths at all levels including the St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrim path,la voie piemont GR78, which passes just behind Le Cazal. Within an easy walk through beautiful countryside with panoramic views, is the Merovingian Necropolis (5-8 century), at Teilhet. A Voie Verte (green road) has been created from an old railway track and now links Mirepoix with Lavelanet and offers easy walking or cycling with lovely views.
