About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Frances Bevan

We moved to this beautiful area of France in September 2016, fulfilling a long-held dream after holidaying in many different parts of France. We were both teachers, and are loving the lifestyle, culture and area that we have moved to!

Year property purchased 2016
Why this location? The Ariege has unspoilt scenery with the Pyrenees and its foothills, rivers, great walking and cycling. The area is rich in history, with many Cathar castles and medieval towns. The Mediterranean coast is easily accessible for a day trip, as is the stunning city of Carcassonne. Toulouse 'The Rose City' is only 40 minutes by train. There is something for everyone in this area...
Unique benefits of property Domaine de Roudeille, an 18th century farmhouse, is surrounded by fields and woods at the gateway to the Ariege Pyrenees. With such a peaceful location, it is difficult not to relax, either by the pool or in the extensive gardens. The 3 gites are all spacious and well equipped, each having their own private garden and terrace area. The local town of Saverdun is only a 3 minute drive, or a walk across the fields, with the nearest supermarket only 2 minutes away.

The Owner Recommends

Medieval towns

Visit Foix or Mirepoix, only half an hour away. The castle of Foix overlooks the main town with its winding cobbled streets with shops and cafes. The bastide town of Mirepoix, with a stunning market square of half-timbered buildings, is a perfect spot to sit outside enjoying a drink at any time of year.

Kayaking and watersports

Kayak on the Ariege from Saverdun or Le Vernet (only 5 minutes by car), or on the Hers Vif from Belpech only 15 minutes away. The Lac de Montbel (about 45 minutes drive) has a wide range of activities and a beach in summer. Many other lake and river activities within a short drive,

There are walks from the Domaine around the fields and hills locally. There are so many beautiful walks to do, from a stroll by a river, to more challenging mountain climbs. The Chemin de Saint Jacques de Compestella and The Chemin des Cathars are among some of the easily accessible marked 'Grandes Routes'

Cycling is another local activity that can be done at any level - we can recommend a bike hire specialist if you wish. There are also various local VTT routes for the more adventurous mountain bikers!

Visit the 'Rose City', taking the train from the local station of Saverdun. So much to do and see at all times of year

The citadel of Carcassonne is only an hour away - perfect for a day's outing

Ax les Thermes in the Pyrenees is one of the closest ski resorts (Ax 3 Domaines) in winter, is a thermal spa resort all year round, and also good for walking at other times of year. Cross country skiing is possible at Plateau de Beille, where there is a great Auberge for lunch.

Local markets can be found nearby on any day, some of the largest being at Mirepoix on a Monday, and St Girons on a Saturday. Perfect for stocking up on French food and browsing round the many stalls.

There are several restaurants and takeaways in Saverdun, including one of our favourites 'La Grignotheque'. Another favourite is 'Le Paradis du Pape' in Mazeres. Pamiers, Mirepoix and Foix all have lots of lovely places to eat...
