Bagnères-de-Bigorre, a charming spa town in the Pyrénées and long visited by the French and sees few foreign visitors. Perhaps this is why the locals are so friendly!
Our apartment is in the heart of the old town yet is in a beautiful and peaceful location which includes a shared but private courtyard garden overlooked by our balcony. It is on the first and second floors of an old converted hotel and is accessible via a spiral staircase.
The first floor is an open plan living room with a well equipped kitchen. A separate utility room contains a washing machine and dryer. Stairs lead up from the living room to the 3 bedrooms (one double, two twins), the bathroom and the shower room (each of these has a wc). A fold up bed can be put up in the larger of the twin rooms and a cot is available. So we can sleep up to 7 adults (or 8 if 2 + are children). We have internet access and a phone. The tv gives several English programmes as well as French ones. There is also a radio/cd player.
The kitchen is well equipped with stove, fridge, microwave, coffee-maker, loads of storage space, pots, pans, crockery and cutlery. There is also a utility room containing a washing machine and a dryer.
The whole of the living area, including kitchen and dining area are open plan.
The living area is open plan and there is seating for 8, with a feature electric fire, television, computer table and doors opening onto the balcony. It is comfortable and quiet with view of the mountains through the windows.
There is one large double bedroom with a huge bed and plenty of storage.
There is a small twin bedroom and a larger twin with 2 beds, and an additional sofa bed that could sleep one adult or 2 children. We also have a travel cot available should you need one. The bedrooms are charming, a lovely mixture of old beams and modern decor.
There is one large family bathroom with a spacious feel. There is wc, bath with shower and 2 handbasins as well as plenty of storage.
The second bathroom is smaller containing a shower unit, wc and handbasin, as well as shelves for storage.
The whole flat is centrally-heated (gas fired) and there is a feature electric fire in the living area.
The flat is located right in the centre of the town yet is remarkably quiet and peaceful so there is a short walk to all of the local facilities - swimming pool, spa, casino, tennis, mini-golf - as well a wonderful covered marked and plenty of bars, cafés and restaurants. There is access to local walks up the nearby forested hill and of course there are all the mountain activities and sports close by. These include biking, skiing, horse-riding, bird-watching and hiking.
There is a small balcony that runs the length of the flat and a well-maintained shared courtyard full of shrubs and flowers.
Free parking is readily available about 3 minutes walk from the apartment. There is also parking a few steps away with a small charge for parking during working hours Monday to Saturday but you can stop for a short while to load and unload your car if needed.
Kids are welcome but the place is not really suitable for anyone with severe mobility problems or in a wheelchair.
We have internet (wi-fi) access and a phone that is free to use for calls to landlines to most places in the world.
Just 5 minutes from the flat is a hill and forest with numerous walking trails. At the top is a tremendous view of the nearby mountains.
Everything was as described. Key holders were extremely helpful with advise on places of interest to see and restaurants to visit..
The town and it's surrounds are extremely picturesque and we particularly enjoyed the challenging walks within walking distance of the apartment.
Parking is on street but was never an issue.
We have travelled extensively in France but this is our 1st visit to Pyrenees and Bagneres de Bigorre was a delight and we'll worth a Visit.
We had hoped that because it was in a town centre that there would be a good choice of places to eat out in the evenings, but many places were closed when we were there (early May), probably because it was between seasons. However we had wonderful days out among the mountains, streams and waterfalls, both the well-known places and also little places that you find almost by accident.
