We had an amazing time at La Rival, met and exceeding our expectations as we had booked very last minute. If we had spend some time choosing an ideal place for our family, we would have chosen this. Everything about La Rival was exceptional, the swimming pool, the grounds, the surrounding area and house. If you have small children & teenagers they will love the place.
I particularly enjoyed walking around the surrounding countryside, just perfect for taking in fresh air and being inspired to paint and draw.
The only drawback was on our part and we should have booked for two weeks as there is so much to do in the region. The Castles at Najac, Penne & Brunqueil, Kayaking with a 5 year old was fun.
What really made the holiday experience for us as a family were the hosts, they were such lovely people who made us feel very welcome.
We will definitely come back again and will stay for longer!

Owner response

Thank you so much for your lovely words. We really look forward to seeing you all again at La Rival. Thank you also for posting the parcel. Cynthia,

The cottage is owned and managed by Cynthia and John, (who are lovely), but well into their later years, this is notable with some of the repairs and the cleaning which misses many cobwebs etc. The cottage promises total quiet and relaxation, yet it is located on a fairly busy road in/out of the local village, so you will hear the traffic. We also suffered the owner cutting the cottage grass with a ride on mower 6 times during our first day, after a very long drive (we were tired and just wanted to snooze) - could be done during changeover? The cottage states 'wifi' but whilst you may accept intermittent service, we had no internet at all in the whole time we were there, and as business owners ourselves, this was a problem which contributed to us leaving early. Only one towel person was provided, which was average in size, and not large enough to 'wrap' yourself in, so maybe consider taking your own/extra towels. The double bed mattress could do with being changed, my husband is abig guy, and we found that the mattress allowed us to 'roll' into the middle, which meant either of us were comfy or got much sleep. As this is a rural setting, you must be prepared for spiders, earwigs, flies, ants etc, and the house is home to bats as well. The pool size is very generous, and even in the poor weather conditions that we experienced the pool was at 26deg, though the outside spa hut doesn't look like it has been used in a while. I don't think we're likely to come back to La Rival.

Owner response

If there were any problems at all, i.e.with wi/fi or ref any of the following comments, guests are able to come and advise us. All visitors are informed that the wii/fi is intermittent . As regards towels:- there are 2 Large Bath towels and 2 Hand towels pp for a ONE week stay.
This is a rural location and within a large & beautiful garden, therefore there is wildlife and insects. However there is an individual notice ref the Bats.(which do not come into the house).plus if any help is needed with insects such as ants, spiders etc, please let us know.
I would like to add the following comments from us as owners.
This couple arrived Sat 22/07pm. Departed Tues 25/07am !!!. The reason of early departure according to guests comment of "bad weather forecast". We regret if the weather forecast did not comply with guests expectations.
With regard to several comments mentioned in their review, particularly the opening sentence which we take issue with.
Having arrived on Sat.22/ On Monday guests went to Andorra. A travelling time of 6/8hrs. An array of comments in such a short stay!!. Please note we do not have a spa. There is as advertised a Sauna housed in an old wine barrel. It is obvious that not all guest sizes/advance expectations maybe fulfilled in La Rival.

This delightful gite is accurately described in the advert and was clean and well maintained. It is ideal for 2 people or a family with young children. The owners are very helpful and quick to assist when needed. It is obvious that they want you to enjoy your holiday to the full and go out of their way to make it happen. The swimming pool is fabulous. We would certainly recommend this property to a friend or relative but the elderly or infirm may find the stairs a challenge. There is an excellent supermarket in the village and we found O'Sulivan's bar/restaurant very good value for money. There are plenty of activities to enjoy at the Base de Loisirs and many medieval towns and villages to visit in the area.

Owner response

Thank you Bob. Always helpful to have comments. We are sorry there is unfortunately little to be changed as regards the stairs, but fully aware that they exclude a proportion of guests.
Best Wishes, Cynthia.

La Rival was comfortable, well-equipped and situated in a lovely area. Quiet and peaceful, surrounded by fields full of sunflowers in gently rolling landscape. It more than met our expectations from the description on the website. We found the property to be clean and well-maintained.

Over the years it is clear that the owners have paid a great deal of attention to comments made by earlier guests, consequently everything about the property was well-thought out. Indeed we found the owners to be extremely helpful, kind and generous, doing everything possible to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable, offering the free use of a mountain bike and delicious tomatoes and other produce from the garden. We made full use of the superb swimming pool.

Our holiday was primarily aimed at chilling out, which we were able to do in great comfort, but there are many beautiful villages to visit locally, most notably Puycelsi, whose beautiful church is a must see. Another trip worth making is to the gardens and chemin de fer touristique at Les Jardins des Martels near Giroussens. We didn't make much of the pizzas at the curiously named O'Sullivans bar in Montclar, but the regional food on offer at Chez Terrace in Vassal was very good.

In conclusion we had a wonderful two weeks at La Rival aided by the kindness of the owners and some wonderful weather.

Owner response

Many thanks for you kind words..Best wishes John & Cynthia.
