La Maison Tranquille is an apt name for this peaceful house and pool, overlooking open fields in the beautiful countryside of South West France. Situated at the end of an attractive wooded lane, the house has no near neighbours to disturb you or to worry about. Nevertheless it is only 3km from the attractive hilltop town of Montaigu de Quercy on the border of Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine, less than 30 minutes south of the Lot River.
A good supermarket, boulangerie, restaurants, Saturday morning market and even a large leisure lake, with beach, swimming, boating and other activities are all within a 5-10 minute drive.
If you can drag yourself away from the pool, sunloungers and shady garden, you may want to go on walks and do some bird watching, indeed you may even see the occasional deer wandering through the field behind. And if you want to venture further afield, there are endless historic villages and bastides within easy reach where you can sit in the square and enjoy a quiet drink or a meal.
There is a small stone cottage on the site which is sometimes used by the owners, family and friends. It has its own garden and terrace on the opposite side of the cottage to La Maison Tranquille.
Please note that the pool is available from May 25 - September 28.
The kitchen is well equipped with: dishwasher, washing machine, fridge-freezer, gas cooker with oven, combination microwave, kettle and toaster.
The lounge/dining room has comfortable chairs and sofas, dining table and chairs, flatscreen tv/dvd player with Freesat UK satellite tv, books, dvds, games maps and guides, wi-fi/internet around pool (weak indoors).
There are 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and one with 2 singles.
All bedding is provided.
The shower room also has a wash basin and wc.
Not usually required in the letting period but there are electric heaters available. More useful - hopefully - are the electric fans for the warm weather!
Combined flat screen tv/dvd player with Freesat (UK tv and radio)
Books, games, dvds
Pool and outdoor toys
Wi-fi/Internet access around pool area
The lovely pool is surrounded by a terrace with sunloungers, parasols etc.
Looking down on the pool is a sitting area with sofa, chairs and low table with views over the fields to the village in the distance.
At the rear of the house is a south facing terrace with dining table, chairs, parasol and a barbecue. Again this looks out over the open countryside.
On the opposite side of the house to the pool is another terrace, again with table, chairs and parasol. This looks out over the spacious shady garden which has children's swings.
The owners have a small cottage on the site which faces away from the house and pool. By arrangement they sometimes use the pool when guests are absent.
Outdoor parking for at least 2 cars. A vehicle is essential in this location.
Access is quite good as the house is on one level.
If you have questions about this please contact the owners before booking.
Iron and ironing board available.
Cahors is not just famous for its wine! It's a lovely historic town in a U turn on the Lot river. With medieval buildings, narrow lanes and courts, it's a lovely place to potter around, do a little shopping and sit and watch the world go by. To drive there directly takes no more than an hour, but why not combine it with visiting some of the other towns along the Lot?
Bordeaux is a beautiful city, about 2 hours away. The Atlantic coast and the Mediterranean are both less than 3 hours from the house, Biarritz and Montpellier are both 3.5 hours and Barcelona 5 hours
Only 20 minutes away, Lauzerte is officially recognised as one of the 155 Most Beautiful Villages of France. A typical bastide, the main square has arcades along the sides. As well as shops and cafes, there are a number of galleries run by local artists. Step a few yards away from the square and there are beautiful views out over the countryside. For centuries Lauzerte has welcomed pilgrims travelling the Camino de Santiago pilgrim route to the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) in Santiago de Compostela in north-west Spain. It's perfectly feasible to walk one or two stages of the route using our house as a base and driving down to Lauzerte
The lavender farm near Touffailes is well worth a visit, for the scent of lavender alone. The shop sells a variety of lavender products. Details at http://www.lavande-quercy.fr/
The city of Toulouse is well worth visiting. The historic centre is famous for its pink terracotta buildings. Toulouse is situated on the Garonne river and the Canal du Midi which links it to the Mediterranean. You can even arrange a visit to the Airbus aircraft factory! 110km
This property really lives up to its name. The setting is certainly tranquil. The pool and different outside dining areas were perfect. A welcome pack on arrival was so nice. We were so comfortable that we had to force ourselves to go out and explore! Many bastide towns to visit and countryside beautiful.
Only criticisms would be:
a) the shower - feel shower curtains aren’t very hygienic and as stall so small they tended to cling to body.
b) bedding. Linen seemed pretty old. No top sheet provided. Duvets on single beds appeared old and stained.
Though we were very comfortable, feel interior needs some TLC.
Geoffrey, thanks so much for posting a review - we're really pleased that you had a good and relaxing time. Your comments about the interior are very helpful and we'll take good note of them.
Many thanks again.
La Maison Tranquille coundn't be more tranquil !
Its a very beautiful and peaceful place to stay
Theres lots to do in the local area but also very relaxing to just stay around the pool
I would definately recommend it . We had a great time
Thanks Chris - we're so pleased that you had such a good time. It was great to meet you all!
The property was exactly as it is named - extremely peaceful and free of disturbances - just what we were looking for. Ideal for those who need to escape from a hectic lifestyle!
The provision of the swimming pool was excellent - its frequent use only reduced by inclement weather, otherwise it would have been hard to leave!
The cottage itself is very well appointed, and very well equipped for every eventuality. It is set in very rural countryside and travelling on the local roads was like going back thirty years as regards the empty roads and occasional cars passed.
The local village is ample, though, perhaps not quite what young children might appreciate.
Local are most friendly and tolerant of our stumbling schoolboy French!
For those with a love of history, the large number of Bastides (fortified towns built by English and French alike , during the 100yrs war) provide an amazing array of study and appreciation - as well as ice creams, coffees and meals for those who are more appreciative of Epicurean pursuits rather than scholastic!
Thank you - so glad you had a good time.
We'd love to be able to guarantee the weather but as yet we haven't worked out how!
Excellent property; very quiet. Very clean; comfortable sofa chairs and furnishings; lots of useful home facilities; plenty of hot water on demand; great shower; all bedding and towels provided; Freesat tv (excellent reception with all UK channels). Swimming pool beautiful; gardens well cared for, good assortment of garden furniture for relaxing and alfresco dining; easy parking; a site manager on call for any difficulties if needed. Plenty of local restaurants but equally plenty of good local produce from street markets or supermarket with good facilities for home cooking - cooker, oven, microwave. Lots of interesting places to visit in the local area. Highly recommended.
Thank you for this David. We're so pleased that you had a good time!
