Visit the medieval village of Lauzerte

Lauzerte is an historic bastide or fortified village and can trace its origins back to the signing of the village charter in 1241 by the Count of Toulouse. As a stronghold, Lauzerte governed the surrounding area up until the 18th century. It was an established stopping off point on the pilgrim trail to Santiago de Compostela, with many modern travelers following the same route to this day.
Today the village hosts many music and festivals, such as the "festival of nights" ( Les nuits de Lauzerte ) when all the lights are turned off at dusk and all the alleyways are lit by candles setting a scene as a theatre under the stars. There are some very nice restaurants and cafes and the view alone from the village is worth the visit .
