About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Stephen Plummer

Retired couple who enjoy quiet locations, good food and getting it right with good accommodation - just like home!

Year property purchased 2007
Why this location? On our first visit to the area we were struck by the quiet, unhurried and calm atmosphere and were overwhemed by the friendly welcome we got from the French. This area was badly affected in World War 2 and there is still a deep affection for the Allied forces for the liberation and the sacrifices they made. The region boasts a wealth of fine restaurants, mostly family run, where the food is prepared from first principles at very reasonable prices. If you want to leave behind the stresses of modern day living for a quiet and peaceful location then this is the place for you. Within 5 miles the market town of Vire offers all facilities with every shop you could possibly need and a bustling market each week. For more local involvement the villages of Champ du Boult (La Pelviniere) and St Manvieu (La Clartiere) are only 1 mile from the cottages and there you can get fresh bread and cakes or have a drink at the local bar. This is why we chose the property!
Unique benefits of property The locations is ideally placed near a lake(fishing)and a superb 18 hole golf course. Both properties are set in their own large grounds and are very quiet and peaceful yet near the thriving market town of Vire with every facility. They are renovated to a high standard with all modern facilities and equipment. The countryside is ideal for walking. Our friendly French neighbours at La Pelviniere run a small farm and the fresh eggs are to die for! The Housekeepers lives nearby and is English so language is not a problem and they are happy to help and answer any queries you may have.

The Owner Recommends

A Visit to Swiss Normandy

Swiss Normandy is an area that includes the Orne and Calvados south of the River Seine. The River Orne that flows across the area gouged out deep gorges and cliffs creating spectacular rocky landscapes. There are a lot of things to do in the area and the following are a few must dos. There is lots of extra information available in the cottage. Please give our regards to the neighbours who run the smallholding next door. M. Pierre and Mme Pierette. They are brillant and may have fresh eggs available.

Villedieu les Poeles has a great market on Tuesdays. Vire market is on Friday. The Tourist Information and internet cafe are near the main car park (free).

Places to Visit

Bayeux with its famous tapestry is only 1 hour away. Mont st Michel is on the coast to the west along with Granville. Villedieu les Poeles (Gods town of frying pans) renowned for copper, brass and bell foundries is 40 minutes to the west. Lake Dathee nearby has a circular walk around the lake with picnic areas. The golf course here is very good. Nearby is a disused railway track converted to a footpath/bridleway for a days walking. Vire Gorge and the St Sever forest are also good areas for walking.

Restaurants in the Area

For fine dining visit Le Moulin de Jean at St Pois for excellent food. Also Le Manoir de la Pommeraie (past LeClerc) for a more hearty menu. For a first class family run restaurant try Au Vrai Normand in Vire. Dining on a budget go to Pizza Christina in Vire. Starter, pizza, wine and water for 2 for under 30 Euros. Le Four a Bois at Martilly for pizza, pasta and meats 40 Euros for 2 people. Watch the wine prices although, unlike the UK if you pay a lot it is noticeably very good but equally the house wines in France tend to be very acceptable. The bar in Manvieu Bocage is worth a visit for the plat du jour or if the fish and chip van is running on a Wednesday will be packed so arrive early.

World War II

The Normandy Landing Beaches are about one and a quarter hours away with lots to see. Further south on the west coast are the submarine pens from World War II at St Nazaire. Pegasus bridge which crossed the Caen Canal was the target of a daring assault the night before D-day. The original bridge was replaced in 1994. There is a museum with helmets, goggles and medals and models of the bridge used to plan the attack. The nearby Gondree Cafe (still owned by the same family) and still a cafe was used as an aid post. The inside is a living museum. Pegasus bridge is a place well worth a visit but a little further away so perhaps tie up your visit either on the way to or from the cottage.

This is the finest gite we have ever visited.
Everything about it was outstanding.
We cannot imagine a more perfect holiday spot.

A most enjoyable and memorable 2 weeks in a most peaceful and attractive part of Normady.

Owner response

It is a truly peaceful and calm area with lots to do in easy reach if you want activity. Alternatively many guests have relaxed and enjoyed the surroundings and simply "chilled out"

Lovely gite, well-equipped and in calm peaceful surroundings-bar the manic grass cutter who is ubiquitous. Loved the sheep and the hare who appeared twice in the garden- a magical experience. Comfortable sofas, essential for the couple of rainy days we had. More than adequate Carrefour supermarket in Saint Sever, which is a pretty drive through the forest. Beware of Calva fermier - we bought a bottle from the shop in Champ-du-Boult ( it had to be fetched from afar, and was in a brandy bottle with Calva handwritten on the label) and it was undrinkable. Good for medicinal purposes, I think! Perhaps update the information re DVD player, as there isn't one. Not a problem at all, except we wouldn't have taken DVDs with us. A minor point though. The walk along the disused railway line is recommended, but otherwise just sitting in the garden with a book was all we wanted. Good communication from the owner.

Owner response

Many thanks for your kind comments and glad you enjoyed the peace and tranquillity. Hope to see you again soon

An hours easy drive from Ouistrham brings you to La Clartiere set in peaceful countryside. Well maintained, well equipped, very clean, the cottage exceeded our expectations. Having had holidays in Northern France over a 15 - 20 year period, we have voted La Clartiere our favourite holiday let. Whilst in a rural setting there is easy access to the main routes for the Normandy Beaches, Le Mont St Michel area, Bayeux etc and south Normandy. This area is well mapped for cycle routes and nearby Lake Dathee offers walks, fishing and boating (- walk from the cottage or a short 5 min drive to car park/picnic area). The local bar/store provides bread and basics as well as an excellent value plat de jour at lunchtime - well worth a visit. La Clartiere's owners are very efficient replying to our initial enquiry overnight. Provided lots of information relating to the cottage and local area upon confirming our booking and more prior to our arrival. Lots more info on places to eat , shop and visit in cottage. Cannot praise enough and would definitely recommend to family and friends. This property and location in the Calvados region in Normandy has all the ingredients for a relaxing holiday.

Owner response

Many thanks Lesley and we are glad you enjoyed your holiday. Haven't tried the local bar for a couple of years and will definitely revisit next time. Thanks for the tip. Hope to see you again soon
