About this property

Comfortable and Spacious Base for a Family Holiday. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

Sleeps 8/10 plus cots in a four bedroom cottage set in 1 acre of enclosed gardens with above ground pool and indoor playloft. Surrounded by countryside. Miles of walking tracks on the doorstep, forest, zoo, lakes, chateaux, swimming pool with slides, war memorials and museums close by. Beaches, Mont St Michel, Bayeux, Suisse Normandy, Falaise, William the Conquerors castle and theme parks all between 30 minutes and 1 hour from here. Family live next door and happy to help if needed, great place for children. Adapted for the winter into a cosy one bedroom ground floor gite.

Kitchen and dining

Fitted kitchen with all the utensils you'll need - we think! Gas cooker with 4 ring hob and grill, microwave, kettle, toaster, washing machine, dishwasher, fridge and freezer. Iron and ironing board.

Living rooms

Large lounge with lots of comfy seating, log fire, English satellite tv, dvd, stereo, book shelves. Double sofabed. Great room to relax and chat. Dining room opens to the kitchen and has a large table seating 12. Wi-fi available.

1st floor: Bedroom 1 with double bed.
1st floor: Bedroom 2 with two single beds and a cot.
2nd floor: Bedroom 3 with double bed.
2nd floor: Bedroom 4 with two single beds and a toddler bed.

All bedrooms have wardrobes or hanging rails, bedside tables, drawers or shelves, mirrors and lamps.
Double sofabeds available if needed on the games room landing and the lounge. Extra cots available.
In winter we adapt the cottage to offer a one bedroom groundfloor gite with one large bedroom with comfortable double bed and additional sofa bed if required for one or two children.

Ground floor bathroom with toilet, basin and shower.
First floor bathroom with toilet, basin, bath with shower over.

Electric radiators and log fire. Please note this is not the same as central heating, it gets really toasty but you should expect to wear slippers and a jumper in the winter, if you expect to wear bare feet and a t-shirt in January the property may not be right for you!

We have an indoor playLoft which has lots of toys for little ones and a sofa for you to relax on, until it's your turn of course!
There is a home corner, baby toys, cars, ball pit & tunnel, a ' ride-on rollercoaster' ride (for toddlers!), games, colouring, puzzles, dolls house and a fort.
It also has air hockey, table football, a small pool table and giant jenga to amuse older kids.
Gym equipment can be available for anybody who would like to use it (further details on request).
Inside the cottage there is the landing area which can be used for entertainment. There is English tv in the lounge and hopefully soon we will have French tv.
There is a 'take one/leave one' book shelf and lots of board games. There is a little cd/radio.
Wi-fi is available free of charge but the signal is weak, fine for keeping in touch with the world but not for gaming or streaming films.

Garden and outside

The house sits in one acre of gardens.
There is a bbq area, seating areas, climbing frame, swing set, sandpit, lawn, camp fire and a terraced hill with great views accross the valley.
Sun loungers are available.
For energetic guests there is a large trampoline with safety net.
We have a 4.5 metre above ground solar heated pool and splash pool (not heated) in the summer, both fully fenced and accessed via a lockable gate.
We have what we affectionately call 'the Dusty barn' because in times gone by it used to house chickens so the floor is a kind of dusty sand. The windows have chicken wire not glass so while it has a roof, walls and a door you don't exactly feel inside. We have a climbing frame in there, cars, a rope swing, an old style school desk, the list goes on! It's a great place for pretend, active play for adventurous mud-pie making type children! We have an open barn with table tennis set up.
We have a bow and arrows so if anyone fancies a go at archery please ask us.

Parking and garages

Gravel drive to the front and a yard at the back so plenty of parking. There is space in the outbuildings to put a roof box or other paraphenalia when not in use.

Visitor suitability

We have stairgates and consider ourselves very suitable for children with lots of extras at no extra cost. See our website for details. In winter we adapt our cottage into a one bedroom ground floor gite so may suit those less keen on stairs although please note there is a step into the cottage and a step into the shower.

Information about any additional facilities

Gamesroom on the 1st floor landing in the cottage has toys, paper, pens and tv with dvd and choice of films to watch. There is a sofa so you can use the space as a second lounge, a quiet place, playroom or bedroom when the sofa is made into a double sofabed.
In winter we offer the cottage as a cosy one bedroom ground floor gite with a large bedroom, open plan lounge/kitchen/diner and a small shower room.

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Angela Scrase

We are a husband and wife with children (aged from small to teen) and pets. We swapped life in London for rural France. It's not always easy but we are very happy here.

Owner's website
Year property purchased 2007
Why this location? We wanted easy travel to the UK to visit family. We wanted the coast, countryside, history and plenty of attractions all within easy reach. We wanted a climate that was a bit warmer than we were used to in the summer and winters with a chance of snow! We wanted a home and a business and this place was the only place we looked at! It ticked all our boxes and so our adventure began!
Unique benefits of property We are remote but not isolated. You can completely relax here. You are in the middle of coutryside to just set off and explore! There is plenty to do on site for children and lots of attractions and places of interest within easy reach by car. The longer we are here, the more amazing places we find, views, waterfalls, parks, chateaux, this region of France really does have something for everyone...unless you want to ski!!

The Owner Recommends

Adrenaline Fix!

The Viaduc de La Soulerve, 60m bungy, giant swing and scary zip wire. All run by AJ Hacket.

We are only 40 minutes from the Normandy landing beaches, these days they are wonderful sandy beaches for a great day out. They are also the scenes of humbling heroism which is brought to life in the many museums and exhibits along the coastline. Just under an hour in the other direction and you are on the other coast and right by the very famous Mont-St-Michel.

The cottage is surrounded by rolling fields and there are miles of marked walking tracks around us. You can set off from the cottage.

Family Theme Parks

Festyland and Le Village Enchante, both within 40 minutes of the cottage and excellent family days out.

Forests and Woodland

The local area is surrounded by woodland with paths to explore it, there is also a very big duck pond and play area. Cerissy-Belle-Etoile has a huge forest and play areas. St Sever is another huge forest. All within 10-40 minutes of the cottage.

We had a wonderful time. the cottage was huge and had all the amenities and more besides, particularly for the kids. We were made very welcome and found loads to do nearby. We would definitely stay again

Lovely cottage ideal for families with younger kids in a very quiet and beautful surroundings. Located centrally in Normandy so the perfect base for daytrips. Most friendly hosts Danny & Angie with their 6 children. lots of toys (both for inside as outside) present for the kids available. Highly recommend this place!

We had an excellent stay at Kestrel Cottage for one week at the beginning of August. The cottage was lovely and spacious and had everything we needed for our holiday. The large amount of toys for the children was amazing and they loved them, they didn't want to leave. The family that own the cottage live next door they were very helpful and a pleasure to meet. We had a few trips out, we visited Arromanche and Omaha beach, i have alway loved the Normandy beaches they are so clean and very tranquil. We visited the zoo at Jurques which was fabulous a great day out for us all. We also visited the swimming pool at Vire so good that we went twice, the children loved it there. I would highly recommend Kestrel Cottage for families with young children.

Delightful setting- beautiful and remote in a good way.
Danny and Angela are literally the best hosts I have ever met, nothing is too much trouble and they are friendly and chatty. Inclusive to the point of singing me Happy Birthday and sharing their daughters birthday cake with me.
Cottage is comfy and homely.
Facilities give you everything you want for small children.
Easy driving distance of Caen and Bayeux to our certain knowledge.
Also a fantastic zoo awithin 5 minutes and a twon with supermarket etc within.
All in all a delightful break.

If you intend to go, I would recommend going to Caen via ferry, as the drive from Calais off the EuroTunnel is trying.
