Our lovely house lies in a peaceful valley among small dairy farms just outside the tiny hamlet of Vaudry and not far from Vire town centre. It has extensive gardens where you can enjoy eating outside and watch the birds and experience the daily passing of the cows from the kitchen window.
It has two good sized bedrooms as well as a beautifully converted loft room with toilet and shower. The house can comfortably sleep up to 4 adults and 3 children in the 3 bedrooms. We offer a discount for one couple only occupancy.
All the rooms are bright and sunny and the front windows look out over the trees and a pretty pond with an abundance of wildlife. This can be partitioned off from the main garden if you have young children. We have two red squirrels and frogs in the pond plus a moorhen and sometimes ducks fly in. If you're lucky you may see an owl.
Its lovely to watch the stars at night and see the sun rise in the morning over the fields.
Although situated in the countryside we are only ten minutes from Vire town centre by car and the retired farmer and his wife, Gerard and Marie Therese, keep an eye on the property from their little cottage outside the grounds. On the road to Vire is the big supermarket Le Clerc which offers an extensive range of food and wine and very nice pastries and fresh bread. There are also two bakeries on the way into Vire and a Lidl the other side of town.
Reviews from previous visitors:
"If you are looking for an authentic French farmhouse retaining all of its charm but modernised to facilitate a comfortable stay; in a house that reaches out to you to make you feel at home; tucked away in a location with stunning views and a magical garden, but only a few minutes from a bustling town and major roads - then look no further!" Sam, Northants
"The location was fantastic, quiet and private but not isolated. The spacious, light and airy rooms very conducive to a relaxing break. The views from every window were a delight." Michael and Barbara Crane, Derbyshire
The kitchen is very well equipped and there is a pine table seating 6 as well as a extendable dining table in the lounge.
The kitchen has a 12 piece dishwasher, ceramic hob and oven, microwave, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle and extensive range of cutlery, plates etc.
The cupboards are well stocked and you are invited to use whatever you find there. This includes tea, coffee, spices, oils. Kitchen towels and loo paper supplied as well as dishwasher tablets and washing up materials. Please replenish these as necessary.
There is a CD/radio in the kitchen and lots of CDs to play.
The lounge/dining room has a large sofa and 3 armchairs. The armoire contains a selection of board games and table tennis bats. We have English satellite TV and a wood burning stove. Logs are stored in the outbuilding in the garden. All rooms have electric radiators and the Blue bedroom and Loft room are carpeted.
The two main bedrooms are large and spacious and full of sunshine.
The White bedroom has a double bed and the Blue bedroom has 2 single beds which can also be made into a king size on request. There is also a double futon which can be used if required. Hairdryers are supplied in both bedrooms. The large armoires in each room contain bed linen and towels, hot water bottles, and duvets and pillows.
The Loft room is sunny and spacious with a double futon and a folding child's bed if required. Here you will find the king size duvet and extra towels in the pine chest. It can be quite warm in the summer up in the loft room but there are velux windows and we encourage you to use the walk-in shower during your stay which is very good.
The house can comfortably accommodate up to 4 adults and 3 children. We offer a special discount to couples using only one bedroom. Bedlinen and towels are all provided in the price.
The main bathroom is on the first floor and has a bath and hand held shower. The loft room has a shower and toilet. There is also a separate toilet downstairs as you enter. Soaps, shampoos etc. all provided. Hairdryers can be found in the two bedrooms on the first floor. We recommend you use the shower in the loft room.

Table tennis bats for use at the local tennis courts and 2 tennis racquets in the armoire. There is access to the tennis courts at Vaudry using the key code provided.
In the outbuilding the third door down you will find a small portable bbq. Also a 6 seater picnic table and 2 benches for eating outdoors and a sun umbrella.
We have two 2 sun loungers, and 2 folding garden chairs and 4 white metal garden chairs. A small white metal table and chairs for 2 can be positioned in the garden by the kitchen door. Two small folding chairs are usually stored in the downstairs toilet.
The gardens are regularly maintained by Sylvain Jamet who we have known over 10 years.
There are lots of places to sit either in the sun or in the shade.
Please feel free to pick the produce and flowers in the garden: hydrangeas, rhubarb, raspberries and apples and pear and walnuts depending on the time of year. The large pond can be partitioned off if you have young children.
There is room to park up to 3 cars in the garden. You can drive up to the front door to unload but we ask you to park in the garden areas.
Not suitable for people with limited mobility because of the stairs. However, we have had visitors with babies and young children. There is a grassy area around the house and then beyond the hedge is a small pond full of wildlife. The pond can be blocked off on request if you have young children.
Please remember the property is situated on a working diary farm and young children should not run unattended outside the property.
The utility room adjoining the kitchen contains the washing machine and household supplies and cleaning materials. There is an iron and ironing board and indoor clothes dryer and a washing line in the garden. There are 2 hoovers. One vax for thorough end of stay cleaning and the other is a small plug in with handheld hoover which is useful for flies.
There is a small folding step ladder which is helpful if you want to open or close the velux windows in the loft.
No wi-fi at the property but it is available in Vire opposite the Tourist Office for few Euros.
The property is cleaned regularly and we ask you leave the house clean and tidy for the next visitors.
The price includes: Bathmats, hand towels, kitchen towels and tea-towels. Bed linen and towels are also provided within the price.
We are both retired and have lived in Brighton for 30 years. I worked in Publishing and my husband John was a University Lecturer. We love everything French and in 2002 purchased a little cottage to renovate. We loved the area so much and decided to move to France and in 2008 bought La Thibaudiere which had already been completely renovated by the French owner who was an architect. In the end we were unable to move to France but love visiting and letting others enjoy the house and surroundings.

|Why this location?||The house is situated in a quiet valley amongst little dairy farms but only ten minutes by car from the busy town of Vire. En route is the big supermarket Le Clerc which has everything you need. Its quite secluded but not at all remote. We love the Calvados region and the fact that we are only 1 hour's drive from Ouistreham and 40 minutes from the coast and all the beaches near Granville. We can also get to Paris in 3 hours by train from Vire station. Plus there are lots of places of interest to visit in the area including Bayeux, Mont St Michel, the Suisse Normande and the Normandy landing beaches. The area is beautiful and full of apple trees and rolling countryside. Its a very peaceful spot to come home to after a busy day exploring all the sights and sounds in the area.|
|Unique benefits of property||The property was built in 1824 and has lots of character and charm. The gardens and pretty pond are lovely and it's a very sunny house with views from all the windows. Its lovely to see the cows walk by the windows in the morning and hens and geese come in to say hello. The garden is well established with apple, pear and walnut trees. The rooms are all very spacious and the gardens are peaceful. People have compared it to entering a magic kingdom because its so beautiful there.|
There is a big market in Vire every Friday morning with everything you can think of including local produce, fish, meat, cheese, cider, as well as clothes, bags, belts and tablecloths. Great for the atmosphere and good to sit and have a coffee at Bar Centrale by the roundabout and watch the world go by. We love shopping at Le Clerc.
There are lots of restaurants in Vire, including Au Vrai Normande and the Hotel de France, plus several creperies and pizzerias.
Christian Dior's house in Granville is always worth a visit. Beautiful gardens and exceptional views from the house overlooking the sea. You can walk down the steps and along the promenade to the town for a bowl of moules et frites. Don't miss the charming Old Town at Granville, particularly the restaurants there.
The lovely golden sands south of Granville are only a 40 minutes drive. Lots of different beaches to discover and a nice drive down through the little villages to Mont St Michel. Jullouloville Beach is the longest sandy beach in Europe! On the way to Granville you pass through Villedieu Les Poeles which has several good pizzerias and copper and lace museums to visit.
Don't forget to visit Bayeux, 45 minutes north, the Normandy landing beaches, the museums in Caen and, of course, Mont St Michel.
To the east 15 minutes drive is the Chateau de Pontecoulant. Open in the afternoons, its well worth a visit. This is en route to the lovely Suisse Normande with its rivers, lakes and outdoor activities great for picnics. Head for Clecy.
There is a large indoor pool in Vire, and an open air pool at St Sever, open July/August and Lac Des Vieux Chateaux has some nice walks.
Nearby is a large reservoir called La de La Dathee 15 minutes from Vire with small sailing boats and bike hire. There is an 18 hole golf course and lovely walks and picnic areas around the lake. You can visit the golf club and sit and have a drink and enjoy the views over the lake.
We have just returned from our stay at La Thibaudiere. This is a really charming property, very homely and comfortable.
The house is set in its own impressive garden which borders onto farmland on all sides. There are some lovely views across the valley. The local supermarket LeClerc has everything you need as well as some lovely treats. During our stay we managed to visit Mont Saint Michel and Bayeux as well as the beach, particularly Saint Jean Le Thomas where there is a spectacular view of Mont Saint Michel and a beachside restaurant Les Jardins Des Dunes.
The local people were lovely and very helpful with our quite basic French. We will miss the fresh baguettes.
Thank you for a lovely stay x
Dear Melanie, We are delighted to hear that you had a wonderful stay at La Thibaudiere and thank you for your lovely comments. We look forward to welcoming you again in the future! best wishes, Nadine & John
La Thibaudiere is a lovely old farmhouse set in its own large grounds in a working farm, if you want to be away from the hustle and bustle it is ideal, however the town of Vire and large supermarkets are less than 3 miles away. The house is superbly equipped and very comfortable with 3 large bedrooms. the house was clean and tidy and made you feel immediately at home, great to hear a vast assortment of birds and of course the farm animals. The area is ideally suited for touring between normandy and Brittany....great place
Dear Steve, Thank you so much for your lovely comments and we are so pleased you all had a good time at La Thibaudiere. Look forward to you staying again in the future. best wishes, Nadine & John
We had a lovely stay at La Thibaudiere. The property was clean, well maintained and well stocked with everything we needed for our stay. The house is in a rural setting and was extremely peaceful.
We had lovely weather so were able to use the garden for sitting, reading and barbecuing.
We had a few trips to the beaches near Grandeville which were beautiful and also took a boat trip to the islands for a day. We walked locally near the lake close to the golf course. At the local sports centre.we were able to play many enjoyable games of table tennis.
We would recommend this property to both friends and family.
Dear Debi and Mick, Thank you so much for your lovely review of La Thibaudiere at Vaudry. We are delighted you had a wonderful time there and look forward to welcoming you again in the future. Nadine & John
Absolutely loved the house and the location. The peace and quite and the actual ability to see the stars was marvelous. The only noise we would hear through the night was either cows mooing or owls hooting. Slept extremely well. The house is very homely and remains very cool in the hottest of weathers. We got very friendly with the chickens and it was the first time we had ever seen a red squirrel. Unfortunately he was very shy and it was only once that we saw him. The proximity to Vire is very handy with the supermarket just 5 mins drive away. After finding a very useful publication we attended many brocantes, either as a shop/warehouse or in a field or village. Sat Nav was definitely useful for finding these places. We also visited the D-Day beaches and Bayeau which are just over an hour away. Would highly recommend. It suited our needs perfectly.
Many thanks for your lovely review. We are so pleased you had a good time and we look forward to visiting some of the brocantes you visited during your stay. Best wishes, Nadine & John
