We would happily recommend a day at Les Salines near Brehal, with its miles of unspoilt and quiet sandy beaches. At low tide you can see the world's largest area of oyster and mussel beds where hundreds of people do "peche a la plage" (beach fishing) and farmers go out over the sands with their tractors to tend their crops.
Lovely ancient town with its magnificent twin towered cathedral, shops, cafes and restaurants and beautiful floodlit gardens in summer. Thursday market day has stalls spread through the streets and squares below the cathedral.
La Cle des Temps is a fascinating warehouse on the edge of Coutances selling second hand furniture and bric-a-brac. Prices are reduced every 4 weeks so look out for some bargains. Vide Greniers (literally 'Clear the Attics') are their equivalent of our carboot sales, where hundreds of stalls line the village streets and one is held nearly every Sunday morning. Lots of bargains.
Gavray is a small, lively little town with a variety of shops including an excellent butchers and boulangerie, and a supermarket. Each Wednesday morning is a lively calf market with piglets, chickens, ducklings and the smell of delicious sausages cooking over the grill. The pannier market is held on Saturday.
There is a small 9-hole course at St Martin-de-Brehal (by Les Salines). Golf de Granville, Breville sur Mer - has an 18 hole links course and a 2nd course of 9 holes. Golf de Vire la Dathee, Villedieu les Poeles has an 18 hole course with spectacular views over Lake Dathee.
Interesting old port on the coast with excellent shops and fresh seafood restaurants along the harbour front.
We had a fabulous holiday. The house is very well equipped with everything we needed to have a wonderful and relaxing stay. The information pack was full of useful information and we absolutely loved visiting all the local markets (especially the cattle market!). The weather was generally great but having the heated pool was brilliant as it meant the children could use it every day. Thank you for letting us stay in your wonderful house.
We thought your house was super – and you had obviously done a great restoration! The beds and bedding were good and we loved the living and dining rooms. The table tennis in the garden was great!
The place is delightful and extremely well appointed and catered for all our needs. Everyone enjoyed the experience and for us having all the children and grandchildren together was a worthy 40th wedding anniversary present to ourselves. We would recommend it to anyone unreservedly. The space, the comfort, the games, the fire, the bikes, the cooking utensils and I could go on without even mentioning the pool. It you intended this to be somewhere that you could call home, with all the things you and the children would want…you succeeded!
Excellent restaurant with lovely ambience and interesting menus. Near beautiful ruined Benedictine Abbey and River Sienne.
This is a good restaurant with views of the estuary. Excellent seafood, gallettes etc. Outside terrace in the summer.
Beautiful local village with speciality shops selling delicious local produce including the chitterling sausage which they make. There is also a mini crazy golf course in the botanic gardens which has a good creperie/bar - fun for all ages.
Lovely little restaurant serving delicious local specialities. Free aperitif for guests.
Probably our favourite seafood restaurant. (Serves meat too). Overlooking the salt marshes on the coast near Brehal.
The house is within easy reach of Gavray with all facilities, weekly calf market and pannier market and close to the coast with sailing, swimming, fishing, golf, walking and cycling. Horse riding is available in the area. There is also a great crazy golf course nearby and lots of places to do cider and calvados-tasting!
Gavray - Wednesday, calf market and a few stalls. Saturday - Pannier Market Villdieu - Tuesday, quite a big street market Cerences - Thursday, small village market Coutances - Thursday, street market in roads below Cathedral Hambye - Tuesday and Friday, small village market.
Famous Abbey surrounded by water at high tide. Lots of little restaurants.
Bar/Restaurant l'Etang is a 10 minute walk and serves delicious steaks cooked over the open fire and is a very relaxing place for all the family.
There is a sailing school just by the golf course at St Martin-de-Brehal. Do sailing courses in summer months.
The courts are situated in Hambye
Are within easy reach with interesting museums at Arromanches and Caen.
Famous for its copper and its world renowned bell factory. Lively street market on Tuesday mornings.
