About this property

Beautiful Oak Cottage Close to Normandy Beaches. This cottage/gite is in a village setting.

Set in the heart of the Parc Naturel des Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin, and on the edge of the pretty village of Sainteny, Oak Cottage, one of three near identical gîtes, provides an outstanding base from which to explore this part of sleepy Normandy. The historic Channel port towns of Cherbourg and Caen beckon the eager tourist, each less than an hours’ drive away, while even closer to your holiday home the Bayeux Tapestry, the Normandy landing beaches, the church in Ste-Mère-Eglise and countless small market towns and villages, full of traditional pâtisseries, boulangeries and cafés, await your pleasure. Magnificent Mont St Michel is a little further away, and even Paris is less than a 3 hour train ride from nearby Carentan, while for the adventurous, perhaps a day trip to VAT-free Jersey from the nearby seaside resort towns of Barneville-Cartaret or Granville might appeal.

Oak Cottage is one of three stone-built cottages in traditional Normandy style. It has two double and two twin-bed rooms, a family bathroom with bath, washbasin and wc, and a shower room with a multi-jet shower, washbasin and WC. The shower/toilet room is adjacent to the ground floor bedroom, making it particularly suitable for elderly guests/grandparents. The cottage has a spacious lounge with comfortable sofa and easy chairs, satellite tv to receive English freeview channels, French TV, channels, a DVD player and cd/hi-fi, a fully equipped kitchen with oven/hob, washing machine and dishwasher, microwave and fridge/freezer, and a dining room with seating for up to eight people. Internet access is provided, as of course is all bed linen and towels, though we do ask our guests to provide their own beach towels. No smoking in the accommodation please, and sorry, but no pets.

In each gite there is also a hairdryer, iron and ironing board and clothes airer. There is also a good selection of books and DVD's and a large selection of literature regarding places of interest and leisure facilities in the area, there are also a selection of board games and children’s toys .

To complement the exceedingly high standard of internal accommodation, the cottage has its own patio area complete with bbq, dining table and chairs for eight people, two sun beds, and a large sun awning, and which opens out into an extensive fully enclosed garden. For our younger guests this features swings, a slide, climbing rope ladder and trampoline, and the delights of Aladdin's Cave, and for all generations we have an outdoor table tennis table, boules, badminton etc. Oak Cottage also has a small garden to the side of the house which is for the guests exclusive use. The property is approached by a separate driveway, has ample enclosed parking, and is just as ideal for families with young children as it is for couples who want a little more space to enjoy this delightful area of Normandy.

Les Gîtes Champêtres are ideal for couples or families/groups with young children and is suitable for use throughout the year Oak Cottage is one of three near identical cottages adjacent to each other, ideal therefore for larger groups. and is set within the 2 acre grounds of the owners home.

About the Owner, Mr Terence Nathan

Up until 2014 Liliane and I had spent ten years of retirement travelling the globe, and then decided perhaps it was time we waited for the world to come to us, so after months of searching, we came across Les Gites Champetres, a delightful property in Normandy that suited our ideas admirably. A lovely house and three absolutely first class cottages, all set in the delightful village of Sainteny, and close to the Normandy beaches of D-Day fame, and the superb holiday beaches.

Year property purchased 2014
Why this location? Easily reached by our families in the UK and Switzerland, a popular tourist region accessible from all northern Europe without the need for air travel, and the 'ambience' and tranquility of this region of France, famous for its food, its cheeses, and its Calvados!
Unique benefits of property Each of the three cottages are self-contained on two floors, each comprising a lounge/dining room, fully equipped kitchen, a full bathroom and shower room/toilet, two double bedrooms and two twin bedrooms. Each of the cottages has its own patio area, complete with dining table and chairs for eight people, two lounger beds, and bbq. The patio areas lead into the huge playing field, with table tennis table, trampoline, swings, slide, and toys in Aladdin's Cave suitable for all ages.

The Owner Recommends

Sights to see

Our gites are a one hour drive from the ports of Cherbourg and Caen and provide an excellent touring base from which to explore the many interesting sites in the Manche and Calvados regions of Normandy; Bayeux with its famous tapestry, St Mere l’Eglise with its famous church spire, the seaside towns of Granville and Barneville-Cartaret (ferry to Jersey/Guernsey), the port town of Cherbourg with the largest artificial harbour in the world and the really interesting Cite de la Mer museum, and miles upon miles of fresh sandy beaches, uncrowded even in the peak times of year. Paris too is sufficiently close to warrant a one day excursion, whether for sightseeing or exotic shopping, taking the 2.5 hour train journey direct from Carentan to Paris St Lazare, and even nearer to home, the magnificent Mont St. Michel. This region really does have it all.

Carentan

Our nearest town is historic Carentan, 10kms from Sainteny, with several supermarkets, banks, shops, cinema, swimming pool and railway station (route to Paris) and a popular market held every Monday. There are several restaurants in the town. Carentan is called the “Capital of the Marais” because of its location at the heart of the marsh from where for centuries it has drawn its prosperity. The old town has been able to retain its rich architectural heritage dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which is not to be missed.

Local Village

Our village of Sainteny has great facilities all within a few minutes walk.
At the centre of the village is the bar/tabac, pharmacy, and the beautiful St Pierre Church. At the top of the village we have a really superb boulangerie/patisserie, boucherie/charcuterie, village shop (including La Poste facilities), restaurant/bar, hairdresser, garage and a doctors surgery - all within walking distance from your accommodation.

D-Day beaches

Sword, Gold, Juno, Omaha and Utah Beaches were the site of the largest invasion in history which, on 6th June 1944 became known across the world as D-Day. Stretching from the Carentan Estuary, a half hour drive away from your holiday cottage, to Ouistreham near Caen, a further half hour east the beaches continue to provide ample evidence of the fierce fighting which took place. German gun emplacements, particularly those at Pointe du Hoc, the Pegasus Bridge, the cliffs at Omaha Beach which were heroically scaled but with such devastating loss of life, and the British, American, Canadian and German war cemeteries, all with their own tragic stories to tell. Our own village of Sainteny wasn’t spared, evidenced by photographs in the village church, and the house which is now our home was totally destroyed, and rebuilt in 1949.

Nearest Market

Carentan 10km.

Nearest Port

Cherbourg 60km.

Nearest Restaurant

Le Relais des Forges restaurant is located in Sainteny, 0.6km from your cottage. Value for money at 13.00 Euros for a meal including starter, main course, dessert, and wine or cider. Both Periers and Carentan have numerous restaurants - talk to Liliane for recommendations, and to help with booking.

Paris

Paris is only a 2.5 hour train ride away, making an interesting day out.

Sports Activities

From football to fishing, golf to cycling, most, if not all sports activities are available within a short drive from the gite.

CYCLING. There are ample opportunities for taking bicycle trips in this region of Normandy, helped because the terrain is generally quite flat! In particular, there is a designated cycle track all the way from nearby Carentan to the coast. Bicycles can be hired from the bike shop in Carentan – contact Terry or Liliane for more information.
