About this property

Tranquil Rural Gite in a Converted Barn. This cottage/gite is in a rural setting.

La Maison Sans Souci is a charming farmhouse set in the beautiful Normandy countryside a short drive from the village of Hambye. The gite is one of 2 owned by us. Both are located in the converted barn next to the farmhouse. There is a large shared garden with a children's play area, above-ground pool, and gamesroom. Each gite has a private patio area with sunloungers, table and chairs and a bbq.

The gites sleep six but can be booked together for larger groups of up to twelve.

Le Bleuet gite is comfortably furnished with 3 bedrooms and provides an ideal base for couples and families who want a holiday with plenty of opportunities to explore. We are located a twenty minute drive from beautiful sandy beaches of the Normandy west coast that never seem to get busy. The warm shallow sea is lovely for swimming and at low tide you can watch the local farmers with their tractors tending the acres of oyster and mussel beds. Within an hour's drive in all directions you will find the larger tourist attractions, for example Mont St Michel, Bayeux, Caen and the D Day beaches.

A 5 minute drive away is the village of Hambye with its boulangerie for warm French bread and croissants in the morning. It also has a butcher's, a small supermarket for everyday needs, a bar/tabac, and two small weekly street markets. Newly opened is l'Adresse, a bar/restaurant serving both a lunchtime and an evening meal. Nearby is the restaurant at the Auberge de l'Abbee, which has a wonderful ambiance. The varied menu provides a perfect choice for a special meal. The nearby romantic ruins of the Benedictine Hambye Abbey set on the banks of the River Sienne, are also a fascinating place to explore with some beautiful walks round about.

The area provides the perfect opportunity for fishing, walking, cycling, and exploring the cider orchards, as well as sampling delicious food; cheese, cider, pommeau and calvados.

Please note that we are required to collect a stay tax (taxe de sejour) from guests. The rate has been set at 0.44 euros per person aged 18 and over per night.

A security deposit of 100 euros is also required on arrival. We aim to return this with 14 days of the end of your stay

Kitchen and dining

A new kitchen was installed in 2015. This area is now separate from the main living area and boasts a full size gas cooker, a fridge with a freezer compartment, microwave, a washing machine, a dishwasher and plenty of kitchen utensils and cupboard space.

The dining area comfortably seats 6 around a large table and patio doors open up onto the outside eating area.

Living rooms

The living area is comfortably furnished with two large sofas and wicker armchairs. There is a tv with access to English channels and a dvd player. There is a large selection of books and some games for 'staying in' days. A wood effect calor gas stove provides heating for those chillier evenings.

Bedrooms

On the first floor are three good sized bedrooms. The master bedroom boasts a king size bed, and with the double bedroom, is at the rear of the property. Both of these rooms have wardrobes and a chest of drawers. The third bedroom offers two single beds and a hanging rail for clothes. This room is best suited for children.

All bedrooms have electric radiators, and all bed linen is provided.

Bathrooms

There is a large shower room on the first floor.

Heating

Each bedroom has an electric radiator and downstairs is a coal-effect calor gas fire in the lounge area.

Entertainment

Attached to the gites is an upstairs games room with table tennis, table football, and darts. This is a great space for children and adults alike. In addition, there are various outdoor games (badminton, croquet, cricket etc) for guest use.

Garden and outside

There are gardens to the front and rear of the property. The gardens are shared but each gite has its own patio screened from the neighbouring one by a large trellis with judicious planting.

The front garden is laid to lawn and has picnic benches, a swing seat, a bench in a pretty pergola, and a hammock for guest use. This area is particularly lovely in the evenings.

The rear garden is a secure area with a large lawn and has a swing and slide set for younger children. At the bottom of the garden is an above-ground pool with sunloungers. The pool is unheated and is available through July and August at the discretion of the owner. The rest of the garden is laid to lawn and provides plenty of room for outdoor games.

The gardens are surrounded by fields.

Parking and garages

Parking is at the front of the barn in a large gravelled area between the gites and front garden.

Visitor suitability

The property is suitable for families with children and couples. Because of the stairs it is not suitable for people with limited mobility.

About the Owner, Mrs Anne-Marie Piper

Anne is a former history and politics teacher and David is an electrician. They met in 2007 through an on-line dating agency, although until that first-date neither realised that the year before David had been working at the school where Anne taught, in the corridor right outside her classroom. With a new relationship came a new adventure in France.

Year property purchased 2011
Why this location? Many years ago, Anne fell in love with French History, particularly that of the French Revolution. Her studies drew her to Normandy and the life of a woman called Charlotte Corday. When she first came to Normandy, Anne felt as if she had come home.David has always wanted to live in either Northern Spain or Southern France. After a number of years house-hunting in the south of France Anne persuaded David to visit Normandy. Once there he too felt the same draw that Anne had felt and so they chose Normandy as their home! The lady always wins....
Unique benefits of property Our village is a very peaceful location and yet within an hours drive you can find so much to see and explore. The nearest commerces are a five minute drive in the village of Hambye, and the nearest beach is twenty minutes away. The ferry ports are an hour away and so it is very easy to get to.

The Owner Recommends

Normandy Landing Beaches

These are an hour away from the property and are a must for visitors to the area. We particularly recommend St Mere Eglise, Arromanches, Pegasus Bridge and the Caen Memorial.

A lovely gite equipped with just about everything you would need for a short stay. The first time we've stayed in gite with a dishwasher. Anne and David were very attentive and considerate hosts, and live on site which makes things much easier. The weather when we stayed there was extremely hot so the kids made the most of the above ground pool. The gite has been converted to a high standard with three good size rooms. Rear garden enormous. The village is quite remote so the nearest facilities are in Hambye,a few km away. There is a games room but the weather was so great we only went in it once. Would definitely recommend.

Owner response

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review. It was certainly hot during your stay and we are pleased the pool came in useful! We are planning a larger pool for next year and work starts in a couple of weeks! We hope you come and visit us again.

Fantastic gite in a beautiful rural setting. The pictures don't do this property justice, it is much better! Friendly helpful onsite owners, who made us very welcome from the initial enquiry, right up to leaving the property after our week's stay.
The property was very clean, comfortable and incredibly well equipped, with a generous welcome basket.
The gardens were large and beautiful, and very child friendly.
The games room was a huge hit and also very well equipped, with a large range of indoor and outdoor toys and games.
Within an hours drive you can reach Caen and the D-Day beaches to the north, and Le Mont St Michel to the south.

We would not hesitate to recommend this property to others.
