Previous guest comments:
"We had a lovely fortnight in France.. It was lovely to do different things other than the beaches. We especially enjoyed the "Le Village Enchante”, west of Mortain. It was great zip wiring and lots of activities for 7 year olds… We also loved the castle at Fougeres. The gite was really well equipped and loved the quiet location, other than the occasional tractor which my son loved to watch through his window upstairs" Family D Aug 15
"Comfortable and well equipped!"
We had a wonderful holiday based in this house! As a family of four we had ample and comfortable accommodation. Our children loved the house and garden, and the garden was secure enough to let our 4 and a half yr old out to play without constantly checking. The house was well equipped for cooking, and was clean and fresh throughout. Great communication from the friendly owners too! Many thanks! Pip Aug 2014
"Time out for a family of five. "

About the Owner/Advertiser, Mr Charles Elder

Busy working lives mean that we really appreciate an opportunity to relax. The slower pace of life & special time with family & friends have given us many happy memories at Les Fontaines.

Year property purchased 2003
Why this location? The location in the National Park is beautiful, peaceful, relaxing and a true taste of France. There are lovely walks and cycle rides. There is also lots to do within an hours drive- Mont St Michel, the landing beaches, medieval towns - not forgetting fantastic restaurants and local food and drink specialities. The spring that gives the cottage its name, Les Fontaines, makes a picturesque setting as the sun sets over the fields.
Unique benefits of property We have been fortunate to find local artisans who have lovingly restored the stunning oak frame structure. Look for the original tally marks on the upstairs A frames, next to the wooden pegs that hold the whole structure together. Modern insulation, double glazing and a Villager wood burner mean that the cottage is now cosy and warm.

The cottage was very clean and and welcoming, and in a lovely peaceful rural location, only a short drive from local amenities. The log burner was great at keeping the winter chill at bay, and the kitchen has every utensil you could possibly need. The cottage is well maintained and the furniture is in good condition.
The directions provided by the owners were excellent, even on a dark wet evening, and we didn't get lost once. The caretakers were there to meet us with the key when we arrived, they had put the heating on, and let us know they were next door if we needed them.
We had a lovely day out at Bayeux - the Saturday market is bustling- and we then drove along the coast to the scallop festival at Grandcamp Maisy. The brocante at Sourdeval on Sunday was quirky and interesting,

Owner response

Thanks Ronda, we are so glad you had a lovely short break. We were very impressed with Bayeux- the Tapestry was way beyond my expectations. I will check out the scallop festival- that's a new one for us!

We had a great time staying in this cottage and exploring the local area by car and bike. The cottage was lovely, very peaceful and had lots of character - it was clean, well equipped, with comfortable beds and it was really super quiet at night (which is great for a light sleeper like me!). The view directly across the road from the cottage was lovely - we spent time each evening sitting out there watching the sheep and the sun set. The owners were very helpful pre and post stay and were easy to communicate with. We explored quite a bit of the surrounding area - Mayenne, Domfront (the medieval part of the time is a must-see), Sourdeval, St Halaire etc. We were completely baffled by the shop/restaurant opening times in general but thought the 1.5 hour lunchbreaks were very civilized! With a bit of planning we had quite a few of our meals sitting under a shady tree on the side of the road! We had a lovely afternoon in the pottery museum which is very close by to the cottage, but sadly missed the much-talked-about brocante on the outskirts of Sourdeval.... which only seems to be open on a Sunday! Would recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful break in the heart of rural Normandy.

Owner response

Thanks Natasha, we are so glad you enjoyed Les Fontaines & all that the beautiful Normandy countryside has to offer.

Arriving at the cottage was an absolute pleasure, the location within a picturesque hamlet is excellent with beautiful views across open countryside. The property has been tastefully restored and has a lovely traditional "French" feel to it. Staying as two couples, we found it to be spacious, comfortable and very clean with modern kitchen appliances. The large lounge features a captivating fireplace and wood burning stove - Perfect for relaxing! There are several nearby villages with friendly shops for groceries, croissants, bread, etc, and there are also supermarkets in the local town. The region offers many things to see and do with numerous cafes and restaurants to choose from when hungry! Highly recommended.

Les Fontaines is a lovely house set in a quiet hamlet. There is total peace and quiet with only the odd vehicle passing by. It is a great location for getting out and about to visit and see many lovely parts of Normandy and Brittany. It is a nice area for walking along quiet roads and footpaths to help you discovery the area. There is a small garden to the side of the property which is great for sitting, eating and relaxing. The house is nicely furnished to a good standard and provides everything needed for a lovely holiday. The property was exactly as described in the advert and was very clean and tidy. Communication with the owner was excellent and from the first contact we knew that they wanted to ensure we thoroughly enjoyed their holiday home and had a great time there. We would recommend this property without any reservation as the location for a very happy and relaxing holiday in southern Normandy. There is easy access to a wide number of towns and villages, and the coast is an easy drive (approx 1 hour) away. We enjoyed visits to Mont St Michel, Dinard and the Normandy Landing Beaches and also Bayeux. We discovered many local events including great markets, A Country Fair, a beautiful Spa Town (Bagnoles de L'Orne) and the medieval town of Domfront. The nearby town of Mortain has a great Tourist Information office with very helpful staff (there is also a lovely walk to 2 waterfalls which includes anumber of interesting buildings, woodland and countryside).
