"We had a lovely fortnight in France.. It was lovely to do different things other than the beaches. We especially enjoyed the "Le Village Enchante”, west of Mortain. It was great zip wiring and lots of activities for 7 year olds… We also loved the castle at Fougeres. The gite was really well equipped and loved the quiet location, other than the occasional tractor which my son loved to watch through his window upstairs" Family D Aug 15
"Comfortable and well equipped!" - We had a wonderful holiday based in this house! As a family of four we had ample and comfortable accommodation. Our children loved the house and garden, and the garden was secure enough to let our 4 and a half yr old out to play without constantly checking. The house was well equipped for cooking, and was clean and fresh throughout. Great communication from the friendly owners too! Many thanks! Pip Aug 2014
"Time out for a family of five" - We really enjoyed our stay in this lovely comfortable cottage. It is in a beautiful tranquil setting. We took our three teenagers who enjoyed some time out in this cosy rural retreat. The cottage is clean and tidy, well equipped and very welcoming. Sandra May 2014

|Why this location?||The location in the National Park is beautiful, peaceful, relaxing and a true taste of France. There are lovely walks and cycle rides. There is also lots to do within an hours drive- Mont St Michel, the landing beaches, medieval towns - not forgetting fantastic restaurants and local food and drink specialities. The spring that gives the cottage its name, Les Fontaines, makes a picturesque setting as the sun sets over the fields.|
|Unique benefits of property||We have been fortunate to find local artisans who have lovingly restored the stunning oak frame structure. Look for the original tally marks on the upstairs A frames, next to the wooden pegs that hold the whole structure together. Modern insulation, double glazing and a Villager wood burner mean that the cottage is now cosy and warm.|
Bayeux, the Suisse-Normandie and the landing beaches are around 90 minutes drive.
The medieval town of Domfront is 30 mins away and the fascinating 'Suisse-Norman' town of Bagnoles with its lake and casino is a 40 minute drive.
Whilst ideal for relaxing countryside breaks, the cottage is also well-situated for various activities. There are beautiful walks by the waterfalls at Mortain. There is an indoor pool in Vire, an outdoor pool at Mortain and a recreational lake near Fougere. There is an amusement water park at St Martin, near St Hillaire du Harcouet. For the more adventurous, go-karting at Mortain and bungee jumping and flying fox in the gorges north of Vire. An excellent place to picnic and watch others jump if you prefer!
Fougere with its stunning castle is 45 minutes south.
Mont St Michel is under an hour away.
Mortain has historic sites linked to strategic WWII battles and there is an American cemetery at St James. There are excellent restaurants nearby featuring local specialities. Local painting lessons available in a variety of mediums at Mortain. Suitable for adults and children and a great way to have fun and to discover your inner artist. Outdoor swimming pool. Gorge with waterfalls & paddling areas.
Les Fontaines is 3-7km from the towns of Ger, Sourdeval and Mortain all of which have supermarkets, boulangeries, banks, restaurants etc.
The Normandy National Park has beautiful villages and chateaux. Lassey les Chateaux is very picturesque. Saint Ceneri-le-Gerei holds the "prettiest village in France" status. Climbing is available at Mortain and at Fosse d'Arthour, on granite cliffs and rock formations.
The larger town of Vire is 20 minutes to the north.
We returned from Les Fontaines a week ago, having had a lovely holiday. The owners have communicated excellently, from booking, and continued to as needed. All the information we needed, we have been given.
The advert for the property was accurately described. Plus all additional information, was waiting for us at the property. We were amazed how well we were catered for! There was also a lot of information, as to days out, places to visit, restaurants, markets, everything you could think of, in the property. The owners had left an “A-Z” of everything you could think of, which was very helpful.
We took our road bikes, and even found the cycle trail from Mortain, which is 400km long. This was extremely useful, as we were able to cycle to other towns etc, without negotiating the hills! Great for families too.
We will be returning, and would recommend to other people. We chose Les Fontaines, primarily for a cycling holiday. We found the local towns had lovely coffee shops, restaurants etc and were all very obliging.
We thoroughly enjoyed our week! The setting was peaceful, I can only say idyllic as that is what it was. 😌
We had a great, relaxing time at Les Fontaines. We found plenty to do locally and within a 40km or so radius. The house book offers plenty of information about the property, the local amenities, restaurants and places of interest. There are plenty of nearby villages and towns, each with great bakeries etc. The nearest was under a 10 minute drive away.
The owners were very helpful and attentive at all times. Any questions were very quickly responded to.
Les Fontaines was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Its quiet location enabled us to further explore areas in the south of Normandy; its local history, traditions and of course to enjoy the local food.
We found all of the people we met during our travels very friendly and had some very interesting conversations at lunch times with local people - both in English and our limited French.
It suited us, our needs and our liking of the French experience very well. Thank you.
Thanks for being great guests & for your lovely review. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay at Les Fontaines & exploring all the area has to offer.
A charming, comfortable and sympathetically modernised gite in an idyllic hamlet. Ideally located for trips to historic Normandy and plenty to whet the appetite of any Gastronaught! The owners could not have been more helpful and accommodating. We look forward to returning many times.
Thanks Martin. We are glad you were able to enjoy the delights of Normandy in such beautiful weather & look forward to your return visit.
The cottage was very clean and and welcoming, and in a lovely peaceful rural location, only a short drive from local amenities. The log burner was great at keeping the winter chill at bay, and the kitchen has every utensil you could possibly need. The cottage is well maintained and the furniture is in good condition.
The directions provided by the owners were excellent, even on a dark wet evening, and we didn't get lost once. The caretakers were there to meet us with the key when we arrived, they had put the heating on, and let us know they were next door if we needed them.
We had a lovely day out at Bayeux - the Saturday market is bustling- and we then drove along the coast to the scallop festival at Grandcamp Maisy. The brocante at Sourdeval on Sunday was quirky and interesting,
Thanks Ronda, we are so glad you had a lovely short break. We were very impressed with Bayeux- the Tapestry was way beyond my expectations. I will check out the scallop festival- that's a new one for us!
