About the Owner/Advertiser, Mrs Julie Foster

When we arrived in France in 2002 with our 8-month old baby, we gave up our established lives in England for a dream.

The dream was here in Normandy, in a retired farmers house, along with serveral barns, lots of space and an orchard with a bread oven. Little by little over the past twelve years, the house has been renovated, and the barns repaired.

The desire to see our children grow in the country, in safety was the driving force behind our decision to move here.

Year property purchased 2002
Why this location? Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouet is a large market town, only 5 minutes away from Les Cours. There is a large public park and two lakes, and this area covers 3.5 hectares. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops give the town a very lively air, and unusually for this area, Sunday morning finds the town bustling. There are restaurants for every occasion, from sandwiches, plat de jour, pizzas and top class hotels. There is also a swimming pool here and cinema. The beaches nearby (well within the hour) are very safe and accessible with wonderful scenery.

Unique benefits of property From the moment you get out of your car, our grounds and gite are totally wheelchair friendly. From the car parking area you can access the wrap around decking without incurring any obstacles. The entrance to the gite has double doors, and the whole of the ground floor is extremely spacious with plenty of room for full turning circles.

The ground floor en-suite bedroom has a wheel in shower, with seat, grab rails, and a specially adapted WC. All ground floor doorways are extra wide, and all controls, light switches etc are sited so anyone can use them, as well as a bathroom mirror at an ideal height for a chair user. There are no obstacles to overcome when wheeling from the bathroom directly into the disabled bedroom, where you will find an Antique french double bed elevated to a height which aids the seamless transfer from a chair to the bed. The height of the bed is also adjustable. When you exit the gite onto the decking, the lawns can be accessed by a concrete ramp.

The Owner Recommends

Less than 15 minutes away is Mortain, which has a panoramic view of the bay from 'Le Petite Chapelle.' Here is a monument to honour Eisenhower in the memory of the World War II Battle of Mortain. The view from here is quite outstanding, and is illuminated at night. Also in Mortain, reached from the car park, are two waterfalls, 'La grande' and 'La petite.' Picnic areas are provided at each, and the rocks and scenery provide great photographs.

Calvados distillery (Coquerel)

Distillery Coquerel is situated in Milly which is only 1km from our gite. This is the foremost distillery in this region which produces the world famous Calvados. This is apple brandy which has been produced for centuries. The distillery is open daily to visitors; the tour starts with a small video which explains a little about the family, the chateau and the manufacture process, this leads on to a guided tour culminating in the "tasting room". There is no charge for tourists!

We had a wonderful stay at Les Cours. We are a family of five. Two younger children of 9 and 7 and an older child with disabilities aged 16. The converted stable is beautiful and the children were entertained by the host of animals, trampoline and outside table tennis. The space we had was quiet and safe and we were able to barbecue outside. The owners - Julie and Hames were very accommodating and if we had any issues they were happy to help.
St. HIllaire is about 10 minutes in the car and had an excellent market on a Wednesday. The nearest beach was Carolles. This took an hour by car but was a beautiful. We loved Le Mont St Michel which was about half an hour away. We also visited the castle at Forgeres (about half an hour) and plenty of other places. In all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and blessed with great weather it was one of our best holidays together as a family. Thanks very much Julie and James!

"Les Cours" is situated in a beautiful rural area in Normandy on the border of Brittany. With a disabled member in the party its hard to imagine better facilities making the stay doubly pleasurable. The owners are a truly friendly couple willing to help at all times. The location is well situated for exploring the beautiful Normandy countryside and coast and in particular the WW2 Normandy landing beaches which are highly recommended. Other attractions are Mont St Michael, Bayeux and the local towns and villages. We would definitely recommend "Les Cours".

James and Julie were perfect hosts -- friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Idyllic setting, comfortable gite. Children will love Lily the goat, Winston the enormous pig, and Chanel the Jack Russell. We are recommending to family and friends, and hope to go back.

Owner response

Thank you Steve, it was a pleasure meeting you all. We thoroughly enjoyed our soiree with you. You would be welcome back anytime.

Beautiful quirky gite. Clean and well maintained. The facilities were as described and perfect for our family. Our son is a wheelchair user and the gite was ideal, he was able to be very independent.
A very relaxing location. The owners and all their animals were lovely. Julie and James were on hand if we needed them but left us to enjoy our holiday.
Lovely area of Normandy which we hope to visit again.
Only one note, the local bakery and restaurant were closed, they take their holidays in August as well!
We would certainly recommend it to family and friends and would also hope to return.
