Rural cottage set in peaceful location only 5 mins from the large market town of St Hilaire du Harcouet. We have converted the old stable block to self catering accommodation retaining many original rustic features combined with modern comfort to create a "home from home". The property has been purpose built for guests with impared mobility. The cottage, set in acres of cider apple orchard, is spacious and tastefully decorated.
The kitchen, dining area and lounge are open plan, giving a spacious feel to the cottage along with plenty of room for a wheelchair to manoeuvre. There is a gas oven and hob, fridge, washing machine, microwave and toaster, iron and ironing board.
We have two comfortable sofas, English tv, dvd player and wood burning stove which gives a lovely cosy feel on cooler days.
On the ground floor there is an ensuite bedroom fully adapted for people with impaired mobility. Including wheel in shower with seat, grab rails and specially adapted wc. All ground floor doorways are extra wide. Guests can enjoy wheelchair access via a wrap around decking to the front and side.
On the first floor there is a twin and double bedroom and an additional shower room with toilet. The landing area is very spacious and is perfect for reading or just relaxing and enjoying the beautiful view. There is also a futon available and a camp bed can be added to the double room if needed. All the usual amenities are provided, including linen and towels. If you are travelling with baby or toddlers, we also provide a highchair, travel cot, stairgate and baby bath.
A shower room with a wc can be found on the ground and first floor.
There is a log burning stove in the lounge along with electric heaters in the bathrooms and bedrooms.
We have a selection of board games, dvd and table tennis.
Outside on our 300m square of lawn we have swings, trampoline, zip wire and a slide for the children to play on.
You will have your own private access to the property along with plenty of space for two cars.
Our cottage is suitable for all ages and for people with impared mobility.
There is wrap around decking and a ramp onto the lawn so there are no obstacles for a wheel chair user.
When we arrived in France in 2002 with our 8-month old baby, we gave up our established lives in England for a dream.

The dream was here in Normandy, in a retired farmers house, along with serveral barns, lots of space and an orchard with a bread oven. Little by little over the past twelve years, the house has been renovated, and the barns repaired.

The desire to see our children grow in the country, in safety was the driving force behind our decision to move here.

|Why this location?||Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouet is a large market town, only 5 minutes away from Les Cours. There is a large public park and two lakes, and this area covers 3.5 hectares. Lots of bars, restaurants and shops give the town a very lively air, and unusually for this area, Sunday morning finds the town bustling. There are restaurants for every occasion, from sandwiches, plat de jour, pizzas and top class hotels. There is also a swimming pool here and cinema. The beaches nearby (well within the hour) are very safe and accessible with wonderful scenery.
|Unique benefits of property||From the moment you get out of your car, our grounds and gite are totally wheelchair friendly. From the car parking area you can access the wrap around decking without incurring any obstacles. The entrance to the gite has double doors, and the whole of the ground floor is extremely spacious with plenty of room for full turning circles.
The ground floor en-suite bedroom has a wheel in shower, with seat, grab rails, and a specially adapted WC. All ground floor doorways are extra wide, and all controls, light switches etc are sited so anyone can use them, as well as a bathroom mirror at an ideal height for a chair user. There are no obstacles to overcome when wheeling from the bathroom directly into the disabled bedroom, where you will find an Antique french double bed elevated to a height which aids the seamless transfer from a chair to the bed. The height of the bed is also adjustable. When you exit the gite onto the decking, the lawns can be accessed by a concrete ramp.
Distillery Coquerel is situated in Milly which is only 1km from our gite. This is the foremost distillery in this region which produces the world famous Calvados. This is apple brandy which has been produced for centuries. The distillery is open daily to visitors; the tour starts with a small video which explains a little about the family, the chateau and the manufacture process, this leads on to a guided tour culminating in the "tasting room". There is no charge for tourists!
Less than 15 minutes away is Mortain, which has a panoramic view of the bay from 'Le Petite Chapelle.' Here is a monument to honour Eisenhower in the memory of the World War II Battle of Mortain. The view from here is quite outstanding, and is illuminated at night. Also in Mortain, reached from the car park, are two waterfalls, 'La grande' and 'La petite.' Picnic areas are provided at each, and the rocks and scenery provide great photographs.
James and Julie were perfect hosts -- friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Idyllic setting, comfortable gite. Children will love Lily the goat, Winston the enormous pig, and Chanel the Jack Russell. We are recommending to family and friends, and hope to go back.
Thank you Steve, it was a pleasure meeting you all. We thoroughly enjoyed our soiree with you. You would be welcome back anytime.
Beautiful quirky gite. Clean and well maintained. The facilities were as described and perfect for our family. Our son is a wheelchair user and the gite was ideal, he was able to be very independent.
A very relaxing location. The owners and all their animals were lovely. Julie and James were on hand if we needed them but left us to enjoy our holiday.
Lovely area of Normandy which we hope to visit again.
Only one note, the local bakery and restaurant were closed, they take their holidays in August as well!
We would certainly recommend it to family and friends and would also hope to return.
A fantastic place to stay. Very clean and well maintained. We have a 4 year old and an 18 month old and they loved all the animals - feeding them and watching their daily activity. The swings, slide and trampoline were also big hits. The house is in a lovely peaceful setting but it is only a 5 min drive to the nearest town which has all the facilities needed. St Hilaire has a lovely park which again the kids enjoyed. There is also an excellent weekly market. The owners were great hosts and dealt with a very minor problem very promptly.
The beach at Carolles is great and is about 45 mins away and we had several trips there with the kids. Avranches is also a good place to visit and can be combined with a beach day. It again has a nice market, gardens with great views and lots of nice looking places to eat. Ducey is also close by and we enjoyed the smaller market there and pretty village centre.
We loved the medieval town of Fougeres and had several trips there. There is a great Chateau to see and a lovely walk around the town. We also explored several pretty gardens and villages with the kids and the owners were happy to recommend some great places to go.
We visited Mont St Michel - it is easy to get to and the walk out over the new walkway was great and a big improvement on the old causeway.
We would recommend this property both to those with and without kids and were just sad we couldn't stay longer than our 2 weeks.
Thanks for your kind words, it was a pleasure meeting your delightful family. Julie
