Dave and I are both from Surrey. We met when I was 16 and Dave was 17.
We have been married for 52 years. We are both from large familes, I am the eldest of 5 and Dave was one of 5 boys. We have one daughter, two sons and 7 grandchildren ages from 5 to 28, we are all very close. Never a day goes by that I have not spoken to one member of the family.
We love travelling so understand exactly what people expect from accommodation. Probably why we have been fully booked for 14 years.

|Why this location?||We viewed several properties over a week's visit, but on arriving at La Baleine we immediately fell in love with the area. It is peaceful, no passing traffic, just the sound of birds night and day surrounded by woods with the river running through. It is idyllic but not isolated and also easy to get to from the UK. Also importantly not far from the beach. The house and location reminded us very much of Fownhope, a village on the river Wye near Hereford where Dave's grandparents had lived. I still cannot believe we live here. Our 3 bed semi turned into a 7 bedroomed house full of character with a cottage. This was the bonus, we never feel lonely as we meet people from all different countries and different walks of life so there is never a dull moment. The separate gite (La Cachette) was a bonus. It is on the other side of the lane from our main house and about fifty metres towards La Baleine. We are in a lane that ends at the beginning of the woods with wonderful walks.|
|Unique benefits of property||Our gite is not part of our house, it is situated on its own with a large driveway and large garden. So you do get the feel of being on your own with the peace and quiet. It is bright and has the sun all day with a large patio to sit out. It has everything needed and we have been asked by guests if we would sell it to them for their holiday home. The bonus is we also have a b&b so if anyone wanted extra days before or after their holiday we can accommodate them which means you can travel during the week. We are near all the main attractions of France, Mont St Michel, the D Day Landing Beaches and Museums, the War Cemeteries which Normandy is known for. We have a highly recommended restaurants within 10 minutes walk and local town 5 minutes drive. The sky at night is amazing with no pollution so one can sit and look at the stars. We are surrounded by wildlife, Deer, Otters, Badgers, so many birds.|
The sandy beaches of the west coast are a mere 20 minutes drive away. The port of Granville is 20 minutes drive. The famous 'copper' town of Villedieu les Poeles, and Countances with its Cathedral are all within 20 minutes or so.
Granville is a wonderful large fishing port with loads of restaurants around the habour. Also the town is bustling with little cafes and little shops and boutiques lining the cobbled streets. There is a very large market in the streets and indoors on a Saturday morning where you can buy fresh local produce, fish, vegetables, french cheeses, bread. Just a short walk all to the cliff top is a wonderful array of antique shops and views along the coast in all directions. A church stands at the top of the hill. Christian Diors house and gardens are at the top of the town.
Mont St Michel, Bayeux Tapestry , and the D Day Landing Beaches and War Memorials are all within easy reach of La Cachette.
The local town of Gavray, which is just 5 minutes by car, has a supermarket as well as a choice of restaurants, banks, shops etc. A very popular market is held in the town every Saturday morning. There is also a large market every Tuesday in Villedieu les Poeles which is the well known 'copper town'. Here in the Bell Foundry, which one can visit, they made the latest new bell for Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
The ancient walled city is well worth a visit. The Citadel is splendid with historic sites to visit such as the castle and Cathedrale St-Vincent. Also known as the Old Town, the labyrinthic network of lanes are surrounded by impressively preserved walls which give fine views over the town and sea. There are an abundance of restaurants and bars and cafes to relax in with a glass of wine over lunch. The bias of the menu leading towards fish. Lots of cobbled lanes are full of interesting shops. There are several sandy beaches within a stones throw. Its not so busy as Mont St. Michel and I just love it here.
One can get to Paris direct by train from Villedieu les Poeles. Also Jersey is a ferry ride from Granville.
The gite is in a lovely quiet area but close enough to local shops for supplies. The restaurant, Le Krill is in walking distance and is very good. Gavray has a good selection of shops for basic needs, chemist, butchers, bakers etc.
The gite is as described and offers good accommodation for two people.
We found the Gite very comfortable but for older couples having to go down stairs for the Toilet not the best at night. The setting with the Garden and peace and quiet was great although because we had the Gite so late in the Season we did feel rather isolated as no other people occupying any other of the buildings so would not recommend to anybody on their own. But overall we had a very nice Holiday and really enjoyed the area.
We are glad you enjoyed your holiday.
I am sorry that we were not there during your stay; usually we are there all through the season until end of October but this year we decided to take a break earlier ourselves.
Normally the adjacent property, which is a gite owned by our friends, would also be occupied but I know that they too took an early break, so the timing was a little unfortunate.
