Vikings raided over the area fighting the locals during the time of William the Conqueror. Williams brother Odo built castles and underground tunnels linking them to the abbey at St Fromond. During WW2 the Germans used the tunnels and appeared behind the lines of the 30 Inf Division whilst there was an ambush of American soldiers on the land itself.
