I live in the Uk and spend a lot of time in Ireland. I also try to visit the mill whenever I can as I enjoy visiting France and find Normandy very quiet and easy to get to and around.
|Year property purchased||2010|
|Why this location?||Peaceful and beautiful location, with stream and lake, yet near to interesting places and sites. Lots of wildlife.|
|Unique benefits of property||A watermill which was there from 1643 and still used for milling until 1950, it has been tastefully converted and now updated. Old Victorian iron workings are still there on display, yet the place is also a real home with FreeSat tv and wi-fi. Guests can enjoy a barbecue on the terrace beside the stream in complete seclusion.|
Normandy has numerous attractions and activities. When you are not playing around the stream and lake, here are a few suggestions.
Le Mont Saint Michel- The 2nd most visited place in all France (after the Eifel Tower). A fabulous day out only sone 50 minutes drive from the mill. Get there early to avoid the coach loads.
Bayeux Tapistry- Another world class attraction about 90 minutes from the mill. See also the amazing cathedral there and browse the small calvados shops.
D Day landing sites-All found along the north coast some 90 minutes from the mill. Museums, Memorials and Cemeteries are everywhere to commemorate the pivotal event of WW2.
Locally- Zoo at Champrepous (20 mins), Copper museum in Villedieu-les Poeles (15 mins)
The best is at Carolles, about 45 mins away. There are a couple of cafes there. Also St Pere sur Mer (tide filled pool). All large and sandy. Swimming at high tide and surfing too.
Walking- As well as walking the paths and lanes around the mill, there are walks around Lake Dathee (9kms) and at Le Gast (5kms) Walk by the famous cascade at Mortain where rock climbing is also possible. There are many walks nearby in the forest of St Sever in Calvados.
Tennis- A public court at Brecey, clubs at Avranches and Granville
Check out the tourist office in Villedieu-les Poeles for may other options including cycle routes etc.
Villedieu-les-Poeles, on a Tuesday, very busy in the summer
The best locally is Le Moulin de Jean at Cuves about 10 minutes drive. There are plenty of cafes and bistrots in Villedieu-les Poeles and Avranches
Supermarkets are open Mondays to Saturdays until about 19.30. The main ones open on Sunday mornings. Locally there is a Super U at Brecey which also sell fuel. Bakeries are often open on Sunday mornings as are the smaller convenience stores in Brecey, St Pois and Villedieu-les Poeles.
